I’m not as excited as I would have been 10 years ago, but still…great news! BUT…I kind of prefer the color grading of 4k77 in most of the shots - I like the slight green shade that it has.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

My movie reviews aren’t AI, they’re just written by someone who’s Neurodivergent. If you don’t like them, then simply don’t read them.

I mean, the colors are looking pretty accurate at the moment, using color seperation masters and all, so I’m guessing they should look more or less the same when it comes out. (Still work in progress obviously, a lot of time left to ruin it 😐)

Yeah that audio clip of the Ben/Vader duel sounds more or less identical to the way the scene has sounded since 2004.

Different scene but I still find it odd how they apparently lost the elements for the shield generator explosion between doing the 2011 and the 4K (which supposedly was actually done in 2012). Should be back to normal for this version however.

What do you think of the new audio? I mean, sometimes it sounds cleaner and much clearer, with the sound effects much more controlled,but other times the voices feel drowned out

I am slightly concerned about the new mix. I am really not the biggest fan of the obviously way cleaner ADR dialogue audio clashing with the rough, on-set sounding dialogue all in the same movie, and Ali sounds like they’re doing that again. (Something previously done to the audio in the the Special Edition, if I’m not mistaken). I guess it kind of sounds like they are making the ADR sound a bit more subtle at times? More rough around the edges to maintain consistency, a bit? However, for example, Leia’s shouting in that comparison clip does sound too clean to me… so I dunno.

First bit of info from all this that has me checking my expectations, which is a good thing. This won’t be perfect. Still looks mostly all great and I’m sure ESB and ROTJ will be fine, this is mainly an issue I have with the original.

I guess the cleanest possible audio is to be expected with the cleanest possible picture, inconsistencies and all. So I’ll just have to accept it…

It’s important to keep in mind, this is the 7.1 track downmixed to stereo, compressed by YouTube, and played back by varying audio systems. I find when played with headphones from the Internet browser, it doesn’t sound great, but playing the same file in MPC-HC and having LAV Audio Decoder upmix it to 5.1 for my 5.1 surround system, it sounds amazing! It does indeed make some of the rougher lines stand out, but that’s true of the video as well; let’s be honest, the faces of the matte painted rebels at the award ceremony are FRIGHTENING to look at with this level of clarity. This restoration will indeed expose imperfections, but that’s part of the charm of the films.

Also, thanks, Patrick, for that reminder of it being downmixed. Even listening to it in stereo some of the “harsher” sfx seam like they…fit into the space a bit better?

I much prefer the 1977 Dolby Stereo.

I don’t want much done to the original mix except to replicate the original fidelity. I’d like it as is. No noise reduction, no attempt to make a near field mix.

Well, from what has been leaked, it seems like they are planning on restoring the original stereo (as far as I know that means they won’t tamper with it)? As well as the mono and 6 track, and finally this new 7.1 for theatres. Some people would probably prefer the new remaster, while others would prefer the true originals.

What matters most is giving people the choice (which Star Wars has not officially had for so long). Right now I’d say it’s looking hopeful 🙏

As long as we actually get all the other mixes on disc, the nightmare scenario would be only having the 7.1 mix when they clearly have access to the 70mm and mono mixes.

I just want the original three mixes included in full fidelity. No dynamic range crushing to cater to soundbars, no excessive noise reduction, just a tasteful restoration from the best elements.

As long as they do that, then they can do whatever gimmicky modern Atmos that they want.
