Looking for Iconic Theaters for the 50th Anniversary Screening of STAR WARS

Hey everyone!

With the 50th anniversary of Star Wars coming up, I’m planning a big surprise for my father: flying to the States so we can watch the original cut together, especially since it’s expected to play in select theaters in May 2027.

So I wanted to ask: which cinemas would be historically interesting or iconic for this?
Ideally, places where Star Wars originally screened back in 1977.

Sadly, the legendary Cine Capri in Phoenix is gone since 98, so I’m hoping some of you might have recommendations for theaters where we could experience this special version in a truly nostalgic atmosphere.

Of course, this all depends on whether the original cut will actually be shown there I imagine it will only play in a handful of carefully chosen cinemas.

Thank you so much for the help.

I wish you well with this, mate. 👍

Here is a list of the 32 US cinemas that showed Star Wars on the opening day (and also some that showed it later that week)

I’m guessing many no longer exist or are still open cinemas - hopefully some of our US members may be able to help you out with a list of the cinemas still open… and likely to be showing Star Wars come Friday 19th February, 2027 - or for the ‘limited time’ afterwards.

I can’t imagine they won’t. It’d be #1 w/ a bullet for this purpose, I’d believe. The only other theater I can think of that’d be even close would be the Westside in Portland, (it was the longest first-run engagement the movie had, over a year I believe) but that theater doesn’t even exist anymore.

I’d like to see it in a theater that I saw it in back in 77-79.
One is actually still open, the other three that spring to mind and the drive in that I saw it in all are closed.
