It’s that time of year we’re I get very nostalgic for 3 main franchises, Superman, James Bond and obviously Star Wars and for awhile now I guess I’ve been wondering what other people’s history with Star Wars is, so out of this curiosity and it being that time of year I thought I would ask you guys/gals.
For me I grew up in the 80’s, I was born the tail end of '79 so my first introduction was mainly with the Kenner toys and I still remember the first time I seen A New Hope, It was the Christmas of 1983 on itv here in the UK. I remember only really being interested in the action scenes and didn’t really have any investment in the plot, so shortly after the canteena scene my interest would go straight back to the toys and then back and forth to the TV waiting for the Obi-Wan duel with Darth.
My mother was a massive Star Wars fan and we would usually end up renting either The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi, If she was home from work we would get Return of the Jedi as that was her favourite out of the OT.
Even as a child growing up for me it was always The Empire Strikes Back that was my favourite and would frequently rent the VHS tape as I was always drawn to the artwork on the case, the one with a giant Darth Vader in the middle and the battle of Hoth at his feet.
For Return of the Jedi I love the beginning with luke rescuing Han from Jabba but after that not so much, the battle on Endor would always upset me especially the scene with the ewok sat at the side of his fallen friend crying and I’ll be very honest the emporer used to scare the heck out of me and then I would be sad again when Darth Dies after saving Luke.
Over time as I got older interest faded slightly, I remember the one final time buzz, think that was the faces boxset (sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong on that lol).
I was in college when the Special Editions came out and to be honest I was excited to see them return to the cinema but didn’t go to see them in the cinema, I wouldn’t see the OT until their official DVD release so at first nothing really stood out as off for A New Hope other than the Jabba scene which at first watch thought was pretty cool especially with the work that was included to add that scene but still hate the scene lol.
The Empire Strikes Back nothing at all stuck out as off and would get nostalgia vibes of sitting in the living room with the toys watching it and trying to recreate the battle of Hoth lol.
Now when we get to Return of the Jedi I’ll quote my mother as when she first seen Jedi Rocks back in 2015 “WTF is this, they’ve ruined it” lol so revisiting Return of the Jedi was a tough one lol.
It wasn’t until roughly 2012-2014ish I stumbled across an edit of the OT on a torrent site that had removed the added affects (It wasn’t Harmy’s Despecialized Edititions, not sure who’s they were but know they wast his) so was landed to finally be able to see the OT without the parts I hate, then the further down the rabbit hole I went with things that I had missed other than the things that stood out to me which eventually led me here with you fine folk.
Anyway that my introduction to Star Wars OT and would love to hear from some of you what was your first encounter with Star Wars and some fond memories, as I said earlier for me it’s always Christmas time that makes me nostalgic for Star Wars, as soon as I see Christmas lights and decorations my mind instantly shifts back to a galaxy far far away back in the 1980’s lol.
