Hi everyone!

I’m very happy to share that I have completed the preservation of the very elusive and rare Star Wars (A New Hope) Japan Rental LaserDisc release. Thanks as always to the help of ooJason, the release is now listed in the forum’s master thread: 📍 250+ available Original Trilogy Preservations - some from a long time ago . . . . 📍!

Technical Details:
Title: droid1138 1995 Star Wars (A New Hope) Japan Rental LaserDisc Preservation
Source: Star Wars (A New Hope) Japan Rental LaserDisc
LD Player: Pioneer CLD-D503
Capture: S-Video → Samsung DVD/VCR recorder (DVD-VR357)
Audio: Stereo RCA into the DVD/VCR recorder
Format: Widescreen
File Size: 4.9 GB (ISO) / 4.7 GB (MKV)
File Type: ISO / MKV

As with previous releases, the Samsung recorder’s digital output let me bridge the analog LD signal to modern equipment while capturing clean video and audio. It also helped as a means to connect the LD Player to the TV, as this DVD/VCR model has an HDMI port and Optical Out. Enjoy and MTFBWY!

Amazing - loving that ‘laserdisc rental’ logo!

You are knocking these laserdisc preservations out of the park with all these rare releases - all credit and kudos to you, enater. Some of us weren’t ever sure we’d see this rare and oft-talked about release again. 👍

I’ve added this to the Project Index, too.

Has anyone else had this glitch towards the end of the film? During the final trench run scene, there are multiple frames that have very heavy pixelation, for example:

It starts at around 01:52:59 and lasts until 01:53:07
I’m wondering if this is only on my download, or if others have found this too.

VLC literally quits out for me after that point in the film. Can you tell me what Sofware you are using for playback.

Nope you’re right the file has an issue in Leawo it misses Luke’s and company run on the trench and literally skips to Ben telling Luke to trust him.

Some kind or corruption in the file, i hate to have to say so.

Ahh that sucks…Hopefully enater will read these messages, and chime in with some further details.

I’m hoping that it was simply an encoding glitch, which can be rectified via a new capture of the video.

It’s a DVD recorder setup he would have to watch the film again and rerecord it to a new DVDR disc.

I would be quite peeved myself. As one doesn’t know where in the chain the glitch happened. And it’s strange that the rest of the film from the beginning up to that point is completely fine.

Jason is going to check the file from .bin to ISO. Maybe he can make heads or tails of it, if not it will have to rerecorded.

Edit: Whelp it was not the BIN to ISO conversion. I’ll wait to see what enater has to say.

That’s disappointing…Hopefully enater will chime in soon.

I can imagine that it would be annoying to have to capture it again, but hopefully it can be done again with no hassles.

Hi all! Sorry for the delay in replying and for the error in the preservation. I just read the messages and will re-check the original copy I made on DVD with the recorder to see if it was at the source. Thanks for letting me know! I will keep you updated on a new file that solves the issue.

Hello, all! I have made a new ISO file which solved the issue. There was an error on the DVD hardcopy for some reason, so a new file had to be recorded. It is now available again to share.
