How can Star Wars help us navigate current world affairs?

Author

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy is a political satire about current and very real threats to Democracy which exist in our world. The Original Trilogy deals with empires, weapons of mass destruction, super-villains, and the power of ordinary people. George’s films have always been a guide for me in terms of how I see the world. I’ve always taken the lessons that I’ve learned from the films and applied them to my personal life. A belief in something larger than oneself, the dangers of fear, and the hope that a brighter future exists for all are just a few things which I know many others on this site have been profoundly impacted by. In these insane times, I’d like to hear some thoughts from you all about what you have learned from Star Wars. Perhaps your words may bring me or someone else some consolation. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.

Jump in an X-Wing and blow something up?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

If a corrupt neoliberal oligarchy degenerates into a fascist dictatorship, just transition back into that selfsame oligarchy.

Star Wars is a terrible guide to follow. Trek’s better. Woefully utopian and short on theory, but still better.

Gods for some, miniature libertarian socialist flags for others.

How dare you suggest Star Trek on this forum?! Just kidding.

Point taken. If you watch the Sequel Trilogy I guess I would concur. However I think if you watch the Prequels and take into account the Hero’s Journey life lessons from the OT, you can actually make many comparisons to what we’re dealing with today.

Well, it was pleasantly surprising to see so many anti-Monarchy marches in the US over the weekend! It would appear a number of people were inspired by the recent Andor series… given some of the slogans and phrases on placards and signs from the show - and even attire worn by some attending (including Tony Gilroy himself).

From a staunch republican (it means something else in the UK - and other parts of the world) - who thinks the UK would be better served phasing out or replacing the UK monarchy and re-assigning the vast wealth, land, properties etc of the Royals to the state (and using the French model of keeping some properties as ongoing lucrative revenue sources for tourism)… for using to help the large percentage of people struggling over the past 15-20 years… well in. 👍

Solidarity.

The real message of Star Wars was always about how success comes from personal virtue, growth, restraint, respect for life, free will, a sense of greater purpose, and redemption. The Rebels vs. Empire stuff was the background and set dressing. It’s much easier to swallow if it’s about #Resistance though because that doesn’t demand anything from the viewer other than picking whichever side they’re told to pick on any given political issue.
