Favorite old-school star wars game?

There seems to be chatter about Star Wars games and such and I thought that I would jump on the bandwagon.

Well, first off, I am no gamer. I don't even own a system. I can count on my hand the number of games I've played on a consol, but that doesn't mean that I don't have a favorite Star Wars game (which also happens to flat out be my favorite game. ever.)

I love Rebel Assult II. Absolutely adore that game. 100%. I played it all the time back when I was in middle school. I stil have that game, but since it is DOS based, my laptop has a hell of a time playing it (sound but frozen picture). I haven't played it since 1997 and that makes me sad.

But god, I loved that game. It had live action actors for characters, none of this CGI character crap. (You can't get personal with a CGI character in a game. I know, I've tried. Just something about live action characters connecting you to the story...) You were really thrown in to the plot! That rocked. I miss that game so much.

And when I wasn't playing my PC game, I hopped into my brother's room and played Super Star Wars, ESB, and ROTJ on his SNES. In fact, I just played 6 levels on ROTJ yesterday. Still good times...

Tell me about yours.

The whole Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series has been my favorite SW games to play. I've played them since the beginning way back in 1995.

Ah, the good old days....when there was no SEs or PT and SW was still the coolest thing ever.

I miss those days....

When I was in third grade, I was obsessed with "Shadows of the Empire" for N64, but I never actually owned it, I just rented it a lot. Then I got it last year via eBay, and I still have yet to play it.

I LOVE that game and book! I have the computer version of the game.

Are there any differences between the PC and N64 versions?

By the way, I read the book a while back, and didn't think it was especially great. But I think we can chalk that up to Steve Perry. I've read some of his other stuff, and he's not that great of a writer.

The only difference is the cutscenes. The computer version cutscenes are rendered in CG, while the N64 cutscenes are mostly drawings. Also, the computer version contains a few more cutscenes than the N64 version.

As far as the book goes, I liked it so much because it felt more like you were reading a novelization of a film, rather than a novel with an original story.

My favourite Star Wars game is definitly Dark Forces! I really love this game.
It's just that it was, for me, the first SW game in which I really feel to be IN the SW universe. The story was really good, the main character was absolutely cool,... and it was one of the first "intelligent" Doom-like at that time. I mean, the goal of each mission was not to find the blue key to open the blue door, find the green key to open the green door, then find the red key to open the red door... as it was in many FPS of these years.

I have really loved to play Rebel Assault II too. It was not a good game (I mean, there are too many different sorts of games in it, and the controls were really bad for some missions), but it was a great SW interactive movie, and a good experience for a fan.

Yeah, I remember having to pause, log out, and then alter the controls so that I could switch from mouse, keyboard, and joystick. But that was easy enough to over come.

And I guess that is why I loved the game so much, because it was an interactive movie/game. They simply don't make those enough (or at all). Same reason why I love my X-Files game so much. You journey with this FBI agent Wilmore through 7 disks while solving a really cool X-Files story (eventually you find and rescue Mulder and Scully too.) It's the actors and live action-ness of it all that is just so awesome.

I really wish they would make more games like that...

The X-Files game was absolutely awesome! I love it! Great story, well done atmosphere, good characters,... and I've even liked the fact that you don't play Mulder and Scully. The attempt to find them is really more exciting.
And one of the good points of interactive movies is the image quality. It's surely best than any real-time 3D.

Tie Fighter
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I second that (and I assume RRS will too).

I was totally freaked when they actually used the "Emperor's Abduction" plot thang for ROTS.

TIE Fighter for me too

Something strangely addictive about the game - perhaps it was the chance to side with the Imperials and show the Rebel Scum who's boss

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

TIE fighter and X-Wing were the best. I remember some of the X-wing missions were really hard, though. But TIE fighter was the best. great gameplay and the storyline was good as well.

The game Star Wars for NES (released by JVC in Europe I think) is my favourite. It was a great game of its time and I still enjoy picking it up from time to time. And of course the Super Star Wars games for SNES was great fun to play as well.

I had that as a kid. That was a fun game, at least I thought so then. I'd forgotten about that game.
