ANDOR - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread — Page 28

So I tried out watching Rogue One immediately after the show. I know I said it improves it before and it does, but it had strange results.

The first half of Rogue One, which I think is weak, is greatly improved. Knowing Cassian, K2, Saw, Krennic, etc. helps it flow very naturally and helps you to care a lot more about what’s going on. Same with the rebels generally. Since the pace of the show is so slow, Rogue One, which normally feels slow early on, feels much faster by comparison. Almost too fast. Cassian almost rises to the level of secondary protagonist because you know him so well by this point. When he decides not to snipe Galen Erso it’s much more meaningful. You know his modus operandi under Luthen was to gun down anyone who could potentially be a problem, and you see that at the beginning of the movie with his contact on Kafrene. The theme toward the end of the show where he starts to embrace the Force a little bit carries through pretty well.

The part where he tells Chirrut that “this is a first for me” when he’s in Saw’s jail is hilarious because they either forgot about it or he’s lying, given that there’s an entire arc in the show about him escaping a hell prison.

There’s also an interesting dynamic with Krennic’s character. We saw him as the intimidating upper manager figure in the show, but when we see him next to Tarkin and Vader he’s in the junior leagues. There’s a feeling that everything has gone up a level and there’s a natural progression from spies running around to open conventional war.

Then the other half of the movie, which people generally see as much stronger because it has most of the action and the big battle, actually gets weaker. The idea that Jyn steps up and becomes a leader figure right away looks even more absurd because we’ve just seen how paranoid and distrustful the rebel command is and how long it’s taken them to trust Cassian. There’s some of that discussion in the council with some of the worst senators ever but it’s still odd. Then they naturally defer to her to give an inspirational speech to the soldiers on the landing craft, when Melshi is clearly their real leader. The way she suddenly becomes the most important figure in the universe with the ability to single-handedly take out a dozen stormtroopers in melee comes across as more Mary Sue-ish next to the more grounded feeling of the show where everyone receives a lot more development. Baze and Chirrut similarly feel a little more out of place.

The ending feels even more abrupt. There’s no real breather where you take in that everyone died, it just slams right into CGI Leia and credits with little explanation. This was more understandable when this was just a fan film prequel for the original movie but now it feels almost insulting, for lack of a better word.

Everyone is on form in Andor - through both seasons of the show… though I have to give some extra props to Elizabeth Dulau for her performance as Kleya Marki in this. Those last three episodes were something else.

Spoiler for S2xE10…

Also all credit and kudos to April V Woods - who played ‘young Kleya’ in the flashback scenes; she absolutely nailed it - completely believed she was the young version of Kleya. On those scenes… also props to everyone involved in de-aging Stellan Skarsgård - it was really some a high quality accomplishment.

And she gives us that Mona Lisa moment at the end” - Tony Gilroy…

'Kleya actress Elizabeth Dulau posts a message to the ANDOR fans:-

“I can’t reply to everyone but I’m seeing all your lovely messages and honestly thank you so much, it means the world ❤️ I am immensely proud of our beautiful show Andor and I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed it.”’

^ from https://x.com/sw_holocron/status/1922746135900279115

Tony Gilroy on Kleya…

“She’s actually been in charge of the thing from day one, from the moment they met. Kleya’s been in charge of everything. She really has been the boss. He’s afraid of her all the way through. If you go back and look at the whole show, she really is the navigator all the way through, from the time they met. And that’s a really cool thing to play with.”

and…

“The moment where she’s on Yavin at the end… and she’s seen Vel, during the final montage, [Elizabeth Dulau] gave just the little slightest Mona Lisa, kind of bit of pleasure that she realizes what her contribution has been. She sees what they’ve built. As much as she’s been against Yavin and against the establishment and felt like an outsider. There’s just this, oh my God, it’s shaded so beautifully! You just almost see this, just the beginning of a little bit of satisfaction with what they’ve done.”

^ from Andor’s Tony Gilroy on how Kleya was actually in charge - at Nerdist.

Also all the kudos and props to Andor casting director Nina Gold, Tony Gilroy and the Andor writers, as well as the actors themselves who played some menacing and memorable Imperials / protagonists / related characters throughout this series…

Obviously the likes of Dedra Meero, Syril Karn, Eedy Karn, Lio Partagaz, and Lonni (you beautiful Rebel, you!)

…yet also Mosk, Chief Hyne, Kravas & Verlo - the 2 Morlana brothel cops, Blevin, Lagreat, Heert, Jayhold Beehaz, Pettiger, the Imperial radio operator in ‘The Eye’, Skeen, Timm, Nurchi, Corv, Gorst, Yularen, Kloris, the delightful Narkina 5 Intake Warden, Narkina 5’s ‘Voice Of God’, the arrogant Imperial Captain of the Cantwell Class Arrestor Cruiser (vs Luthen and his modified Fondor Haulcraft), Pluti, Captain Kado on Ghorm, Sergeant Gharial and the Imperial tactical team in 2x12… the list goes on…

Andor creator Tony Gilroy praises actor Anton Lesser - aka Lio Partagaz (via Variety)

“Anton Lesser, I mean, that actor is one of the many blessings of making this show… if you go back and just did a supercut of his scenes, you see not only how great he is, and not only how funny he is, but that dude is carrying so much expositional weight so effortlessly for the writers on this show. If you’ve got to get some story across, Anton will deliver it for you, man.”

Kleya & Vel spinoff when?!

Kleya & Vel spinoff when?!

I’d watch that.

A Dedra and Syril sitcom - based in their Coruscanti apartment, too. 😃

Mocata’s intriguing idea for Jynn and Saw series!

An ‘Adventures of Young Kleya and Luthen’ series as well, surely.

Uncle Harlow sitcom (we’ll never see him)

The building of Death Star II (something that Star Wars content has stayed / veered away from)

Or a whole sensual series on this…

Hard to imagine before Andor that this character, with merely ~60 seconds of screen-time in Return Of The Jedi, will be in 40+ years time… considered one of the most well-written and most important characters in all of Star Wars…

With additional shout-outs to our new Rebel heroes introduced in this gripping masterpiece of storytelling and world-building…

Nemik, Cinta, Vel, Taramyn, Gorn, Brasso, Maarva, Clem, B2, Bix, Wilmon, the Time Grappler, Ferrix, the Dhani, Anto Kreegyr and his 30 men, the many divergent Rebel cells mentioned in Saw Gerrara’s ‘clarity of purpose’ speech, Thela, the Ghorm, Kino & the Narkina 5 crew, Freedi & Dewi, Niya, Kellen, Erskin (LA-form), the Force Healer, and of course… Lonni, Kleya, and Luthen.

^ Not forgetting everyone has their own Rebellion… and even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward…

^ give these two their own show! 😉

About time we had a watering plants / botany-based Star Wars series, as well…

^ spoilers for S02E12…

and later Cassian watering his many plants in his home shortly before he leaves for Kafrene - probably thinking about Maarva and Bix…

Spoiler for Cassian’s gun in Andor and Rogue One…

Other Rogue One content that felt / hit different (or were more impactful) to me after watching Andor…

Cassian even hearing the name ‘Erso’ in Rogue One; that reaction… wow!

The Rings of Kafrene scene where Cassian shoots his asset, Tivik. I love the way Andor re-contextualises that. Also, the scene in Andor S2E07 where the Force Healer fixes Andor’s shoulder… that Cassian likely wouldn’t have been able to “climb”™ out of the corner he was in with Tivik in Rogue One without that (Tivik, with his broken arm certainly couldn’t)… all those small touches leading to and affecting later developments. Beautifully crafted. As well as mirroring Luthen and Lonni.

Every time Andor pushes back against Jyn in Rogue One feels much different now. He wasn’t being a cynic, sceptic or dismissive… he was desperate for proof the Rebel Council would actually accept… (it is now much more layered)… to give meaning and validation to Luthen’s sacrifice and Kleya’s efforts; “I’m not the one you’ve got to convince”… to persuade the Rebel Council sceptics we’ve already encountered in Andor.

When Cassian on Jedha says: “this town is ready to blow”… he’s seen Ferrix, Ghorman and likely other places erupt into that powder keg of violence… and now has that same all-too familiar feeling for Jedha.

Cassian also ignoring a number of General Draven’s orders in Andor… now resonates well into Rogue One!

^ More, though spoilers for Andor S02E10-12…

Tarkin admonishing Krennic for recent security leaks… the’re now not just talking about Bodhi Rook… it is Luthen as well. Lonni, too. Mothma’s escape from the the actual Imperial Senate. Gorst being assassinated and his work lost as well. The bungled Imperial raid at Luthen’s shop… Luthen being killed whilst being in Imperial custody. Partagaz’s self-resignation (someone he was on first-name terms with, seemingly respected, and possibly considered a friend); Krennic was having a fairly bad and disruptive week - right to lead up of Rogue One. Then Tarkin taking the Death Star project from Krennic seems a much less ‘power grab’ move now, too.

As well as content like this…

and later this…

(where a number of Rebel soldiers, spies, saboteurs, assassins… volunteer to go with Jyn, Bodhi, Baze, and Chirrut on Jyn’s mission to capture the Death Star plans on Scarif)

^ and then Cassian & Jyn in imperial uniform, along with K2, walking straight into the Imperial facility on Scarif - a nice touch.

The Rebel Fleet deciding to go join the fight at Scarif… after two seasons of Andor showing us all the divisions, the infighting, the secrecy and risks behind this move… this moment feels much more earned. Much of what we saw led to this…

Losing K2, Melshi, the Rebel soldiers based at Yavin who volunteered… then Blue Squadron, and the Rebel reinforcements…

The whole last third of Rogue One - well, yeah… that now also hits much harder. 😢

The mirroring of the “Who are you?!” scenes…

Plus those iconic last moments in Rogue One (before the Vader & Tantive IV scenes)

“Your father would have been proud of you, Jyn.”

That certainly carries a lot more weight and meaning after Andor - on many levels.

Although, Andor - as a series - works just as well on its own, too…

“More than anything, I wanted to end on hope.

I really want to be hopeful at the end of it. It is not just a way of creating another character for Disney and Lucasfilm.

It’s really much more about finishing on an up note and finishing with something that I think all the people who made the show really want to express, which is that in the end, we really do want to be hopeful.”

^ Tony Gilroy on the final shot in Andor (from this EW article) - and a 10 minute ScreenRant video - both contain massive spoilers.

Spoiler for the very last shot of Andor (S2xE12)

And for the Star Wars Saga itself - from a certain point of view…

As poorly as it was told… The Republic and the Jedi fell because one man couldn’t let go of the woman he loved.

We now know that the Rebellion will ultimately win because one woman is able to let go of the man she loves.

“You don’t have to know anything about Star Wars to watch our show at all. The show is designed to that purpose.” - Tony Gilroy.

^ although with the 2 seasons of Andor & Rogue One, we finally now have a fitting and worthy ‘Prequel Trilogy’ for the Original Trilogy.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Well articulated again regarding Rogue One!

The first half flows pretty smoothly off of Andor. Down to little ways how characters react to certain names and things. I never really liked the ending of the film. Every scene in RO with Vader in it is pointless and/or introduces plot/character problems and tone problems most of all. RO is a movie that tries to present a more grounded Star Wars, but occasionally (and sometimes in very important moments, such as the ending) just throws it all aside for cringe fanservice schlock. Which feels more offensive in light of the rest of that movie’s tone, and vastly more so in light of Andor.

So mostly RO feels even more weird for me now. But other aspects of it I appreciate more.

I watched Rogue One too. Still tepid as ever. Still strangely edited with odd tonal shifts and bland characters. The idea that one piece of media improves another just isn’t the case in my experience. I think it’s a Gareth Edwards problem, since despite the input of other writers and studio interference it feels a lot like his Godzilla and The Creator. Nice to look at but damn they are lacking charisma. Jyn’s response to seeing the hologram is where I knew there was a problem; this and the other “emotive beats” are just them going through the motions rather than having real feeling. Oh well, I gave it an honest chance.

I agree on the Andor to Rogue One transition, but also don’t forget that Rogue One was insultingly cut down and tweaked and edited. The tonal shifts are probably a result of this. It was still in Disney’s “Original Trilogy fanservice galore”, which, to be fair, only calmed down now during Andor - and hopefully continues. Gilroy and Edwards should go straight back to the editing room and re-release a Director’s Cut with Andor in mind.

Rogue One should be re-cut to remove all of Vader - except perhaps him staring out on the destruction of Scariff, and calm down Jyn’s rushed arc in act 2 to balance it better off with Andor’s story still going on. He takes the backseat in RO in certain portions - and the main problem with Rogue One was the lack of emotional connection to its two leads. Now that one is fixed, don’t sacrifice him for the lesser character.

Now, give us a Anakin and Obi-Wan Clone Wars live-action series with Andor’s writers (I haven’t even seen Clone Wars, but I love the concept) - and let’s delve into Asajj, Dooku (recast or deepfake), young Ahsoka (i have no interest for “current Ahsoka”, the performance and characters are sleep inducing) and some of the clones and Republic Troopers. I know, i know: “it’s all there in the animated series”. I don’t care! It’s live action for me, babe.

We also need a full-scale 5-minute recreation of Anakin’s slaughter on the Tuskens as a recurring nightmare he’s trying to suppress. I always hated how it only gets 4 seconds in AotC, but we’re supposed to feel the full extent of it.

“But Anjohan, that’s kind of brutal for a kid’s show!”

  • Anakin is burned to a crisp in RotS, kids scroll through creepy videos on tiktok from the age of 8, the world has gone mad and I want me some more psychological Star Wars. This is a no biggie.

Some fun synthwave and flashbacks to TV intros of old…

Andor 1999 TV Intro (Spoilers)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv73TRxbsb0 - a 2 minute video from the Craven In Outer Space youtube channel.

The blurb: 'If you were around back then - or had the VHS box set - you know the story. The primetime hit ANDOR (1975) ended on a nail biter that left fans hanging for almost a decade. Then, without warning, the network quietly greenlit a follow‑up and dropped it into the 1982 lineup.

It was ambitious. It was uncompromising. It was ANDOR 1999.

With visual effects that pushed the boundaries of early television and a continuation of Cassian’s story that kept fans talking for years after, ANDOR 1999 was the second life for a story we knew in our hearts wasn’t finished. Whether you watched it live or are just discovering it now, this is the season that dared to leap 20 years into the future and never look back.’

Why “Andor” Hit Different: Exclusive with the Executive Producer Who Changed Star Wars

www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDs_nYTYMqg - a 1 hour video with Sanne Wohlenberg; at the Carolina Groppa youtube channel.

The blurb: 'A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting a panel at UTA for a screening of ANDOR - the Star Wars spinoff series from creator Tony Gilroy. It was there that I met today’s guest, executive producer, Sanne Wohlenberg.

Sanne is a German-born television producer working primarily in the United Kingdom. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of a Limited Series the following year. In 2022, she was announced as a non-writing EP for ANDOR.

During our conversation, Sanne and I discussed pivoting from law to entertainment, choosing talent over credits, and why you don’t have to be a STAR WARS fanatic to fall into the target audience for ANDOR.’

So I tried out watching Rogue One immediately after the show.

Did you re-watch the actual theatrical film or revisit one of the many quality fan edits of Rogue One? The Rebel Council meeting resulted in them choosing NOT to go to Scarif - though a small squad of Rebel volunteers did join with Jyn and her 4-man team to go steal the Death Star plans there regardless. Why would Melshi, a Sgt - and one of those Rebel volunteers, give an inspirational speech to the other volunteers? It isn’t Melshi’s mission - it is Jyn’s; her plan, her knowledge, and her mission to go there. Melshi also doesn’t appear to be the Rebel volunteers’ leader - if anything Cassian has seniority and rank, and seemingly very likely pulled those group of Rebel volunteers together himself. Plus, it is indeed Cassian who gives tactical orders (to Melshi - among others), as well as ‘make 10 men feel like a 100’ talk, after the end of Jyn’s speech.

As the film illustrates, those Rebel volunteers know the odds and that they are likely to not make it - it sinks in for them as they approach Scarif… Melshi actually being shown to be one of them - and it is Jyn who gives the inspirational speech in response - to rally them shortly before the ship lands:-

‘The way she suddenly becomes the most important figure in the universe with the ability to single-handedly take out a dozen stormtroopers in melee comes across as more Mary Sue-ish’ - again, did you watch the actual theatrical film? Or is it mere hyperbole? As for Jyn’s ability for taking out a dozen stromtrooper in melee single-handedly… that didn’t happen. Jyn disables 3 stormtroopers in the melee at most, along with shooting an additional 2 stormtroopers in the distance, followed by her then turning and shooting the KX droid in the heat of the skirmish (with Jyn believing she actually shot K2… until K2 appears;) hardly ‘a Mary-Sue’, no?:-

or at 2 minutes in to this 3 minute video of the Jedha City Ambush Scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJT6t6tAmgo

or this 20 second clip of Jyn’s skimrish on Jedha: www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-PzJEvVetY

This is also something not out of place for Jyn’s character… as Saw says of Jyn: “You were already the best soldier in my cadre” - back when she was 16. We also see Jyn overcome the two Rebel soldiers sent to rescue her from the Imperial prison facility at the start of the film. As also featured in the film… Jyn is used to being on her own - surviving on her own - and is also ‘not used to people sticking around when things go bad’.

Let me know which edit of Rogue One you watched - and please PM me the link - it seems an intriguing watch. 👍

Watching ANH after both Andor and R1 really drives home the massive facepalm every person who fought and died to get the Death Star plans would have done had they seen Luke & company accidentally bring those very plans into the Death Star itself

The ‘Star Wars’ series notched eight Emmy nominations for its first season, but went home empty-handed.

'With Andor‘s second and final season now complete, Disney is hoping to turn the show’s critical raves and thoughtful discourse into award-season triumphs. It’s submitting the show for consideration in 23 categories at this year’s Emmys. Among the honors Andor hopes to compete for: Outstanding Drama Series, which it was nominated for back in 2023 but ended up losing to Succession.

The 2025 race is again a strong one, with Severance the likely frontrunner. But even if Andor doesn’t claim the top prize, it still has excellent chances to not only be nominated in, but win several other categories. According to Variety, these are the categories in which Disney is submitting Andor for Emmy consideration:

• Outstanding Drama Series
• Directing for a Drama Series: Janus Metz for episode 208, “Who Are You?”
• Writing for a Drama Series: Dan Gilroy for episode 209, “Welcome to the Rebellion”
• Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Diego Luna (Cassian Andor)
• Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Stellan Skarsgård (Luthen Rael); Kyle Soller (Syril Karn)
• Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma); Denise Gough (Dedra Meero); Adria Arjona (Bix Caleen); Faye Marsay (Vel Sartha); Elizabeth Dulau (Kleya Marki)
• Guest Actor in a Drama Series: Ben Mendelsohn (Orson Krennic); Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera); Benjamin Bratt (Bail Organa)
• Guest Actress in a Drama Series: Varada Sethu (Cinta Kaz)
• Character Voice-Over Performance: Alan Tudyk (K-2SO)

The rest of the categories are:

• Casting for a Drama Series
• Cinematography for a Series (One Hour)
• Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes,
• Period of Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
• Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling
• Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More)
• Music Composition for a Series (One Hour or More)
• Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score)
• Original Music and Lyrics (“We Are the Ghor”)
• Picture Editing for a Drama Series
• Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)
• Sound Mixing for a Drama Series (One Hour)
• Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie
• Stunt Coordination for Drama Programming
• Stunt Performance.

This year’s Emmy nominations are announced July 15, and the ceremony will be held September 14 in Los Angeles.’

After trying out Rogue One after Andor, I’ve been doing the original trilogy next. As I suspected, it resonates a lot more with Star Wars 1977/A New Hope than ESB or ROTJ. ANH starts with Leia as a senator, the Imperials talking about how the Emperor dissolved the senate, Luke living as an average person, and of course the Yavin base and the rebels taking on the Death Star. After that though, the rebels are the background for the main characters. Andor barely deals at all with the rebel pilots and ground troops, and other than the main characters, they’re the main stars of all the battles in the original trilogy.

Andor isn’t “better” than the movies, it’s a completely different tone and genre so you can’t really compare them. Han Solo wouldn’t exist in Andor, and neither would Obi-Wan, Yoda, Jabba, or Boba Fett. Vader and the Emperor were deliberately excluded. You could make a case for a toned down, less adventurous version of Luke, Leia, Tarkin, R2D2, and maybe C3PO or Chewbacca. No classic alien monsters like the dianoga, the space slug, or the rancor. Andor is cool but by comparison it’s dreary and a little bit lifeless. That fits for its genre but the idea that it’s somehow better than everything else in Star Wars is contemptuous. It’s just different.

This also goes for the people sneering at the awards ceremony for Luke and Han destroying the Death Star. Andor doesn’t change anything. Okay, they joined the rebellion like a day ago. So what? Everyone would jump at the chance to celebrate the people who finished the mission after so much sacrifice. Luke’s aunt and uncle, the people who raised him, got turned into charred skeletons and his home was burned down. Leia was tortured and had her planet (including her entire family) destroyed in front of her. Han gave up dealing with a bounty on his head to risk everything and join the rebellion, and he later got tortured and frozen into a block of carbon for his trouble. If there was any mission in Andor that was dangerous and risky, that probably goes double for going into the belly of the beast in the Death Star itself and making it out alive. Yes Vader let them escape so they could go back to the rebel base - there’s nothing saying he had to let anyone other than Leia do that. Luke, Han, and Chewie could have been killed or worse. Setting aside blowing up the Death Star by itself, they’ve got their rebel bona fides even if they got them relatively quickly.

Meanwhile Andor-version Mon Mothma gets to be head of state because she was born rich, went to a lot of parties, and reluctantly let her daughter marry a boy she wanted to marry. Let’s give some champions some medals, I think it’ll be okay.

I wouldn’t say Rogue One is a good transition point either because it has its own problems, but that’s another story.

these guys are pretty classic SW bickerers; the thesis of with the right leadership (Leia) the himbos (Luke and Han) can achieve real rebellion is all there

I’m not sure how I feel about them milking these characters, but I’d put money on Luthen being a focus of the next “Tales of.” Tales of Rebellion let’s call it.

I have yet to re-watch Rogue One now that Andor is over but you bring up some points that will probably ring true for me as well.

You have the exploits of regular and extraordinary brave people, no Jedi. No Demi gods.

The only part was the Force healer scene, which did something interesting for once. The character being played by the violent detective from last year’s Kneecap threw me though (good movie btw) but I guess that’s range. And another anti–authority story in its own way.

I don’t think they wanted to be Anti-Star Wars, they just wanted to make it without depending on existing Star Wars to make it good or interesting. They wanted it to be more Star Wars rather than recycling existing Star Wars.
