The Machete Order Revised

Author

With all films form sequel trilogy now available to the public, would you make any modifications to the Machete Order? Or would you just add them inorder after RotJ? Discuss…

At this point, going movie-only, I’m a fan of this order for a full marathon:

  1. TPM
  2. AOTC
  3. ROTS
  4. Rogue One
  5. ANH
  6. ESB
  7. ROTJ
  8. Solo
  9. TFA
  10. TLJ
  11. TROS

For a first time viewer, though, I’d always advocate for going release order and leaving the spinoff movies for after the saga.

Oh that’s interesting, like a Binge Watch Order.

Yeah, I actually really like using the spinoffs to buffer the trilogies, and Solo before TFA works surprisingly well.

1.Original Trilogy
-Star Wars 1977
-The Empire Strikes Back
-Return of the Jedi

2.Sequel Trilogy
-The Force Awakens
-The Last Jedi
-The Rise of Skywalker

3.”Flashback” Trilogy
-Revenge of the Sith
-Solo
-Rogue One

Bookending with Star Wars 1977 and Rogue One is essential, imo.

EDIT: is there a reason why this thread was moved to the EU section? I feel like it’d fit better in the Beyond The OT section, but that’s just me.

this one is interesting , I may try this on my next marathon viewing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV3mdMJJsPk THE DESCRIPTION FROM THE VIDEO -"Release Order, Chronological Order, Machete Order, everyone has an opinion about the best order for watching the Star Wars movies. I have a new order to recommend: the Spoiler Order, one that preserves the famous “twists” of the franchise for longer than either the Release Order or the Machete Order.

This video discusses those spoilers, so if you don’t want to listen to spoilers, here’s the Order:

Episode I, The Phantom Menace
Episode IV, A New Hope
Episode II, Attack of the Clones
Episode V, Empire Strikes Back
Episode III, Revenge of the Sith
Episode VI, Return of the Jedi

After watching in that order, you can watch the other movies in whatever order you like. I also talk for a little bit at the end about why Chronological Order is better if you don’t care about spoilers."

I am curious to hear others opinions on this…

Would certainly be interesting to try it. Would also break up the prequels. Too bad the ST would throw off the symmetry.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

My personal modifications to the machete order… 😉

Andor
Rogue One
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi

That’s it.

At a push… and for more on-screen stories from the wider GFFA (in any particular order for after watching ROTJ)

The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi
The Last Skywalker (Hal’s edit - though any half-decent fan edit of this will suffice)
Visions
Skeleton Crew
Mandalorian (Season 1)
Clone Wars (2003)
Solo

I watched a YouTube video recently that made a good case for watching chronological vs release order. Almost everyone knows of the famous “I am your father” line at this point, even non-fans, which works against the biggest reason to suggest release order.

I put this together almost two years ago, but I think it’s a solid way to introduce someone to this ever-expanding galaxy!

A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
SOLO (well I enjoyed it)

Attack of the Clones
Clone Wars micro series
Revenge of the Sith
Andor S1 S2

Rogue One
Return of the Jedi
Mandalorian

After having seen anniversary Phantom Menace in theaters last year, maybe I would add that back in…the HAL9000 or Phantom Edit though!

It was a real treat watching it with someone who didn’t know the line see it for the first time.

But even if you know the twist it’s still better to do release order in my opinion. Going from Return of the Jedi to Phantom Menace is much less jarring in terms of technology and visual aesthetic compared to going from Revenge of the Sith to Star Wars. The prequels also have a lot of in-jokes, callbacks, and “coming full circle” moments that don’t mean anything unless you’re already familiar with the original trilogy. That’s how it works even if you’re just listening to the music, there’s a lot of leitmotifs that are references to themes that were already developed elsewhere.

What a unicorn having some genuinely unaware of Star Wars lore to that degree! I hope some day I can have a watch thru in release order with someone that is truly ignorant of the story.

I honestly prefer either the chronological order or the machete order. I really cannot bring myself to watch the Original Trilogy first and then the Prequel Trilogy. To me, one should always end with Return of the Jedi, because the ending of Return of the Jedi is the most satisfying and fulfilling one. If you watch Revenge of the Sith as the final movie but have no desire to rewatch the Original Trilogy immediately afterwards, then you end the Saga on a depressing note. But if you watch Return of the Jedi as the final movie, you have a happy and satisfying ending and can conclude the Saga on a positive note. So again, I prefer either the chronological order or the machete order, as both orders allow you to watch Revenge of the Sith before Return of the Jedi rather than after, and I think it just makes more sense this way.

“I know that all of you like to dream about space and are a little bit of envious of us. But you know what? We’re also envious of you. We are exploring space, but it’s only the beginning. Planets and unknown worlds are awaiting you. You will continue to storm the Universe.”

I just want to be clear , this is misquoting me a few posts above. If you go back and look at my full post , you will see that I only said I may have to try watching this order and was curious what others think of the video that I linked there , which I did not make , and merely stated the information from the video. I went back and put quotation marks around the parts of the video description I used in my post for clarity .
