How can i PM someone?

Author

Sorry to revive this old thread, I was just wondering if it would be possible for one of the moderators to remove the restrictions on my new account so that I can PM someone? I wanted to request a link but can’t PM anyone for a week, and I can’t figure out how to contact the moderators directly as I can’t start a topic myself. Thanks!

Can you not send a PM right now? I didn’t think there were any restrictions on that. Maybe a part of some new site features?

Maybe wait that week - and meanwhile take the time to look around and see how the site functions, the site and fan project rules, read through any of the info and discussion threads across the boards that may be interest you - and join in the conversations on here.

Leave some feedback or reviews for projects you have previously seen. Or chat about the OT, the wider GFFA, or film, tv, music, gaming, tech, or life in general etc. Or look at how some of the fan projects on here are made / come together.

Simply become a participating member of the community on here. Good luck with it - and welcome to the OT. 👍

Hi oojason. No, I can’t PM anyone, it tells me that I’m restricted for 7 days. But if I have to wait then I have to wait. I came here for kreep’s regrade of T2 specifically but the whole community here seems great, I plan to stick around and get involved. Glad I found the place! Thanks!

New members have restricted permissions, partly to combat spam/bots…but other reasons also.

Do you know how long until the new member status gets removed? I sent someone a message and I went back to check it today and it just says “forbidden”. Once I lose the new member status I should be able to see any responses, right?

You’ll have full permissions 7 days after signing up.

Hello i cant access my DM, it says FORBIDDEN.

Also I can’t DM anyone it says To help prevent spam, new members aren’t allowed to start private topics for the first 7 days after signing up.

But my account has been created 1 month ago and I had DMs with a few people.

I resetted my password I think it created a bug in your system and it thinks my account is new.

Please help, thanks

You’re in the Members group, so you should have PM access. Try logging out and back in again.

I think I’ve identified a bug that might’ve caused this, so I’ll look into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Hello, sorry for the inconvenience.

I understand the rule that you can’t PM anyone for 7 days as a new account, but I just got a PM and I can’t read it, it says “Forbidden”

Is there a way I could just read that PM ? Thank you in advance, have a nice day!

I understand these restrictions are an inconvenience, but they’re in place for valid reasons—mostly spam prevention.

You also might consider signing up just to PM project owners and ask for links isn’t in the spirit of the community.

The restrictions are all sensible and justified (and welcome in the case of spam prevention) but I’m currently looking at my 9-day old account that still cannot access the PM that was sent to me last week (clicking on it brings me to a “FORBIDDEN” screen). Is there something else that needs to be checked off before that can happen? Clearly the 7-day unlock isn’t working correctly. I log-in manually daily so logout/login also doesn’t solve it. On my profile it still says I’m in the “new members” group so I guess users don’t currently migrate out of that group after 7 days automatically?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does it mean 7 days to the exact minute? Lol. I know that sounds weird but, this is my 7th day and was hoping to answer a PM.

So few have chosen to take that time to look around and see how this community forum functions, our site rules & fan project rules, read through any of the pinned ‘Index & Help’ & ‘How Do I Do This?’ threads, as well as any of the fan project threads that may be interest you - and actually join in the conversations on here.

Leaving some feedback or reviews for projects you have previously seen. Or join in the discussions about the Original Trilogy - or the wider Galaxy Far Far Away. Or participate in the discourse here on film, tv, music, art, books & comics, gaming, tech, history, sports… or life in general etc. Read up on how some of the many fan projects on here are made / evolve / come together - or check out the talented artists’ cover artwork, and budding authors’ stories, script-writing, and re-writes.

Simply becoming an active and participating member of the community on here means a significantly better chance of others helping you out in acquiring any fan projects you may be looking for…

The issue isn’t about being ignored or not receiving a PM. The problem lies with the fundamental functionality of the site. Despite meeting the 7-day minimum requirement, I currently have private messages that I’m unable to access. To clarify, I’m not referring to the ability to send PMs—I can’t even view them. None of the FAQs you linked address this particular issue, so it appears to be a technical problem.

Same. Would just like to view my PMs. Yeah, I could be more active, but I after reading some of the posts, I really only have like 2 interests on here. I didn’t even know about this site until I was told by numerous people on another site about it.

So even the Private Topics started with me are intentionally forbidden? I have two unread topics started with me that I cannot access

Those 2 unread Private Topics you received were replies to your 2 ‘link request’ posts made in the project threads on here.

A snippet from ❕ I have found a Fan Edit / Preservation I am interested in - but I don’t know how to get / acquire / download it? ❕

FAO new members to the OriginalTrilogy•com: You may NOT be able to send / receive a PM for 7 days after joining the site.
Do NOT make ‘link request’ posts for fan projects in any of the threads on here. Instead, use the time to look around and see how this community forum functions, our site rules & fan project rules, read through any of the pinned ‘Index & Help’ & ‘How Do I Do This?’ threads, as well as any of the fan project threads that may be interest you - and join in the conversations on here.

Leave some feedback or reviews for projects you have previously seen. Or join in the discussions about the Original Trilogy - or the wider Galaxy Far Far Away. Simply becoming an active and participating member of the community on here means a significantly better chance of others helping you out in acquiring any fan projects you may be looking for…

Joining up here and then creating a new thread along the lines ‘Give me the link to X’, ‘Where is project Y’, or going straight into a project thread and posting ‘How do I get these?’ or ‘Link, please?’ doesn’t really fly on here - and will likely be ignored or deleted.

The OriginalTrilogy•com is a community where a ‘read first - post after’ mantra benefits everyone here - especially for the ‘Fan Project’ sections. We appreciate some may be excited to see the projects featured on this site - information on how to acquire them is readily available - yet patience is also required. If you bring impatience, entitlement, aggressive or vitriolic attitudes, personal attacks, or toxicity… then expect some choice words in return - and also expect your stay on here to be a short one.

Welcome to the OriginalTrilogy•com - you’ve taken your first steps… 👍

Even reading through this thread… it is clearly stated there have been new PM features introduced recently - to help combat spam (but other reasons also) - so it stands to reason why new members cannot send, receive or open PMs for their first 7 days here… and that there are still a few hiccups to smooth out with the new PM features.

A little patience and all that, eh?

Or… ignore the spirit of the community here, the rules and guidelines which has seen this place survive and thrive for some 20+ years, plus how this place works (and doesn’t)… and then try to later claim it isn’t about being impatient… or being able to get those download links to your ‘link request’ posts… it is really about the “fundamental functionality of the site”.

Good luck with that approach - I wish you well with it. 👍

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Definitely is, and I can’t talk about the one thing I want to see, because this is the only place I have found where someone has pieced it all back together.

I also notice that logging in doesn’t switch your “User Group”. So, either it is a bug, or whoever is in charge of doing that, only does it like once a week or something.

It’s a bug (the code runs at the start of the user’s session, but there’s a hole in the logic that causes it not to run at login). Will post a fix in the next few days.

I see those of you I didn’t manually upgrade have transitioned to the Members group, so it worked as intended regardless.

oojason isn’t wrong though; joining a community as a new member, only posting link requests, and then expressing frustration and demanding support because you can’t get immediate satisfaction on a free forum is bad form.
