small update. closing stages part god knows what. In a previous reply I mentioned the fact that I had an idea re the sound. While I had managed to create a 5.1 track from my PCM stereo track using Adobe Audition amongst other things, it sounded a little flat. This is something that is endemic to channel seperating a stereo track that wasn't designed for 5.1

So the next idea was to de-SE the sound to the 1997 mix by Neil S Bulk, but upon closer examination, while there was more life to this mix, there were some areas where mine was better so I set about mixing the two together in a multitrack vegas session. This work ultimately ended up incorporating a lot of pieces from the 2004 DVD Ac3 5.1 file, including a lot of the dialogue centre channel.

So, what this release will now have is a full bitrate 5.1 Dolby Digital Soundtrack in addition to the other soundtracks on offer on this disc.

My Edit is as follows.

Star Wars : The Special Edition

Now before people start whinging and moaning and wringing their hands, it is NOT the 1997 special edition. Similar to Darth Editous' print, this is a DE-SE'd DVD retaining the CG space battle scenes and other shots I was unable to fix. Darth Editous allowed me to use a lot of his fixes and I have also incorporated a lot of fixes of my own. See the list earlier in this thread.

This will be a dual layer release with animated menus and the following soundtracks

1. AC3 1.0 Mono Track (1977 35mm Academy Mono track by Moth3r with ad breaks fixed)
2. AC3 2.0 Stereo Track (1977 35mm Two track Dolby Stereo Track by Neil S Bulk)
3. PCM 2.0 Stereo Track (1993 Definitive Collection Two Track Dolby Stereo, recorded off my laserdiscs)
4. AC3 5.1 Surround Track (see note)
5. AC3 2.0 Stereo Track (Isolated Score Track created from the Isomix release)
6. AC3 2.0 Stereo Track (Commentary Track from 2004 DVD Release)

* Track 4 is created from 3 separate sources.
a. 1993 Definitive Collection audio separated out into a 5.1 track using Adobe Audition (my own work)
b. 1997 Special Eedition 5.1 AC3 file created by Neil S Bulk, provided by Rikter and Russs15
c. 2004 official DVD 5.1 AC3 file.

Things to consider

The 1977 6 track mix (re-mix re-constructed courtesy of the EditDroid team), the 1985 mix (courtesy of the 1992 Pan and Scan Laser Disc), the Definitive Collection commentary track and the Editdroid isolated score were all considered for this project but quality of the video source was of more importance than even more audio options and what you actually have is one of the biggest single collection of film soundtracks on one disc.

As this is the Star Wars Special Edition all of the first three soundtracks are untouched apart from the addition of sound elements to make the audio match the onscreen action. This means a few dewback howls and a few shots during the final space battle.

Track 1 as per broadcast includes the 3po line tractor beam line, blast door line and Wedge line missing from subsequent mixes.
Track 2 is untouched
Track 3 Includes the 3po line tractor beam line, blast door line but not the wedge line
Track 4 includes the 3po line, blast door line and wedge line missing from all stereo releases until 1997.

I am now at the stage of creating the master video file and once that is done, then I will be having a stab at authoring the disc.

I honestly thought that this would have had more interest as it is looking like one hell of a decent edit and the audio options are second to none............

I for one think this will be a great release and am looking forward to it. It has most every track around, and then the commentary and isolated score. Whats not to like? I'd love a copy when its done.

I'm still not sure what to think of this project as it seems like a combination of ADM's edit, the Classic Edition by ocp, & the Edit-droid.
But...it still interests me to the point where I think i'd be interested in a copy just so that I can say I have a special edition that I won't have to grimace through the entire time.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Tellan please dont be discouraged by the lack of response, almost ALL of my sets especially the SE sets hardly got ANY feedback at all,and i started wondering why i did them and if i should continue, but then i ran into Russs15,Rikter,Boba Feta,Segaflip,Gundrosen,Bwlag and a few others, that really enjoyed them,ALL of them,so the way i look at it, if ONLY these people like my sets, that is good enough for me and made it worth it,so please on behalf of Russs15,myself and i am sure others, please finish this set of yours,it really looks interesting,it appears to me that most everyone is hung up on the "Editdroid" set and others are just holding out for the X0 set,now dont get me wrong i want the X0 set too,but who knows when that will surface,6 months or 6yrs,or 60yrs?
sorry for the ramble, just dont want you to get discouraged, like i almost did,now i dont care who likes my versions and who doesnt

I agree that Editdroid set seems to be overrated. But I think that the Dark Jedi Transfers were great. And yes, I am looking forward to this set, if for nothing else than it has every audio option one could ever want, and I'm looking forward to getting a copy of this and seeing it when it is finished.

I wouldn't say editdroid is over rated. it is good. non anamorphic unfortunately but I've already been able to cure that as Russs15 can testify to in some tests I did earlier in the year.

I still want a good quality O-OT and citizens fits the bill quite nicely. I am in awe of his 5x capture overlay to eliminate noise, fantastic stuff. X0 project is obviously what everyone is looking to for the future but I think we have to look at a DE-SE'd DVD as a strong contender purely because of image quality, once you get past the horrible colour correction issues, and aside from me, Darth Editous and Mverta, nothing else trips off the tongue in this category.

I am REALLY looking forward to this as well, just by virtue of the extensive color-correction, original footage reinstated, and ALL of those soundtracks- including the original stereo!

I'm sure that there are lots of folks that would hit the ceiling over this one, but have not checked out the thread in a while. Don't be discouraged! Some folks really appreciate it; they just can't give feedback right away.

found a new technique to get starfields back pretty damn effectively. this was done in vegas but there is no reason why this wouldn't work in avisynth script using overlays to blend three or four versions of the same shot off the same footage.

for those interested, this is using chroma keying and intensity levels to bring up the stars that are there in one layer, then putting a normal version of the shot over the top and removing the blacks to let the background through.

tedious but good.

these shots are off the 2004 DVD and include NO diddles to retrieve the starfields. all those stars are there, it just shows how screwed up the colour correction on the official release is.

for the tantive shot all that background is in the DVD release. the tantive is from the DVD release, the laser bolt is from the Gkar SE release. (I didn't feel like rotoscoping more lasers after my lightsaber-athon) and the engine glow is a simple transparency overlay layer.

happy new year to everyone. no updates I know. I have about 180 frames of compositing to do but have been put onto night shigts for a bit so not in the mood to composite right now. update to follow when done.

thank christ finally yes.

I figure its taken about 14 months to do this thing. I am now so sick of it I just want to finish it and stare at something new (ESB) on my monitor screen.

menus are done
audios done
corrections to be made on video then output of file.

18 hours to make master file
8 hours to encode to mpeg
2 hours to compile as dvd
x time to burn it and make sure I can do this thing dual layer.

thanks for the offer segaflip. I'll need the help.

I have two issues remaining.

one I can sort. as in it's a compositing problem I just to finish.

the second though.

I am using DVD maestro and have a film with 7 (yes count 'em) 7 audio tracks.

I have a menu page and buttons created to choose which audio track you want, but how do I make the buttons play the movie with the respective soundtrack selected?

Seven???

I thought that you had settled for a meagre six audio tracks

1. AC3 1.0 Mono Track (1977 35mm Academy Mono track by Moth3r)
2. AC3 2.0 Stereo Track (1977 35mm Two track Dolby Stereo Track by Neil S Bulk)
3. PCM 2.0 Stereo Track (1993 Definitive Collection Two Track Dolby Stereo)
4. AC3 5.1 Surround Track (see note)
5. AC3 2.0 Stereo Track (Isolated Score Track created by Editdroid)

I guess that the extra is track either the Definitive Collection LaserDisc commentary, the 1986 Digital Sound mix or Isomix isolated score......

well six or seven,

it depends on the mpeg encoding quality. if I go 6500 mbps I have six soundtracks so lose the 1993 LD commentary track which to be honest is very meagre anyway, or go 6100 mbps and have the seventh audio track.

btw, russ, did you see the alley file I sent you? what did you think? that was the last compositing fix I had left to do.
