Look closely... the closing iris closes too far on the "red arrow" frame, then opens up again slightly on the next frame.

I was about to make myself a new burn anyway (that's why I was looking at everything) because I've just persauded the boss that I need TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress for work (I do, really) and thought it might make a better MPEG .

I hope you won't be too disappointed that you won't all be getting new copies Although if it ever comes your way, you'll be able to tell because the serial number will be something like DE-ANH200511xxP.

thanks for explaining it DE - you sir, are a perfectionist.

It's a shame that some of the people on here, like your good self, were not in the employee of Lucasfilm for when they did their releases - there would be hardly anything mistakes to notice - let alone very small errors like you just informed us of above - that the majority of us would never have noticed anyway.

I'm still off going toget my eyes checked anyway

"And for the love of God! There's GOT to be something you can do about the Ian McDiarmid scene. It's like, I want him in there, but the visual looked so stupid. Is there a possibility of making your own hologram out of other Emperor scenes from ROTS or ROTJ and then compositing it with the Vader footage? The transmission can crackle and sputter to hide the lips not matching up. They're in an asteroid field after all. If that's too ambitious, perhaps you could just manipulate the existing image, fix the hood and add shadow to the neck to hide that turtle thing he had going on. It just did not look right at all. Anyway, hopefully you'll come up with something better - and hopefully not the original old lady/chimp thing, 'cause that one doesn't work any more."

Lower the brightness so much that most of his face is shadowed, then it will look eerily mysterious and still look the the emperor. Now if you can restore the original dailogue WITH Ian's voice.....

I like the idea of asteroids interfering with the signal, but then again Vader did tell his crew to move out of the field so that wouldn't happen.

Rivel's subtle over-emphasis on certain words much like Jone's Vader and of course the one and only Ian Mcdirmad from RotJ SHOULD have been emulated for the new ESB scene but wasn't to my surprised. Ian pulled a Portman and phoned it in from Israel or wherever. I remember the Yes... Yesss...., not brilliant stuff, but effective none-the less in making this character seem mysterious and creepy as he should. The new, flat, "yes, yes, can it be done", bla bla bla well... it's not the same. *wahh*

Ian in ESB is a total botch job. The dialouge changes which could have been good turned out for the worse. The make up was horrible. The performance forgetable. Not a good scene. In the original the Emperor was a mysterious, intriguing figure. In the new version it seems Ian was filmed in between takes on one of his worst make up days on RotS. Hopefully fan editors can rectify this unfortunate turn of events. My suggestion would be mixing both audio and video of both Emperors for the optimum result.

(When I say audio I'm mostly referring to "Yes...yes." If Ian can be replaced by Clive there w/out it being too noticeable it would do wonders.)

That might be tricky... but how's this for a very rough test?

http://monkey.dynip.org.uk/yesyes.mp3

The main problem I'm currently forseeing is that Ian never says the word "Luke" - everything else is present (but not necessarily in the right order*)

But before any of that, I'll be re-editing War of the Worlds - only a few things to do (originaltrilogy.com has corrupted me so much that as I watch films at the cinema, I'm making mental notes on what to do when the DVD comes out!)

a) No close-up of that woman being dusted
b) No exposition from the news crew
c) No aliens in the basement
d) The son doesn't survive

Darth Ed.

quick question on your WOTW edit (I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive - bloody mail order...). Are there any deleted scenes on the DVD that can be added back in? I've read a few conflicting internet articles, some saying there are some and vice versa.

Cheers.

p.s. while you're at it can you digitally replace the ferry with Thunderchild and add the whole of Jeff Wayne's soundtrack to the film - just a small request, lol

I doubt it. Spielberg stopped releasing deleted scenes on his DVDs.

No, but I've toyed with the idea of MST3King the Timothy Hines version. No, really!

Here's the correct link to the mp3:

Already an improvement DE!

Btw, I'm a big WotW fan as well and was very dissapointed by latest film version, and would certainly welcome any improvements you could make to that flawed film. The absolute worst aspect IMO being the ridiculously feel-good ending.

I agree, most of the so so aspects were tolerable, but why go through the majority of the film creating a bond with his daugter only to have 'the boy' pop back up again.

The bit I felt most dissappointed with was where were the machines were dying at the end. Is there a way to make it look like the machine just fall as a results of the virus, rather than see loads of bravado from the army as they blast the thing with a rocket launcher? The message was like 'the good 'ol army did it again!!' which wasn't the case.

Just got my copy of ANH, great work DE. Really brilliant stuff. Glad to see ANH in good quality without having to cringe at all of GL's "improvements."

A big thanks to all those who paid it foward too.

DE, I agree that McDiarimids voice performance in ESB was flat. but it is not all a total loss. if you combine emperor dialogue from ROTJ and ROTS its probably salvageable and certainly something I'll be attempting on my version.
in addition, I think Ian McD's scene in ESB stands out because we see too much of his face.

in ROTJ he's in a lot more shadow, particularly under the chin.

so a bit of masking, some interferenec and chroma keying etc to blend it in, I think it would be possible to darken him up and retain the scene visually and make it fit better with ROTJ.

Anyone got any bright ideas how I could go about removing Palpatine from a frame, so I've got a clean background to work with? At first I thought taking the darkest pixel from every frame might work, but it doesn't. For what I want to do, I need as accurate a background as possible.

I think lowering that MP3 an octave would be better. He sounds like a dirty old man version of John Lennon, not an evil matermind 'thinking'.

I don't see the big deal with the Emperor scene. Dialogue is a little flat, sure. Too much lighting? Who cares. He's talking to Vader, he's not hiding from anybody.

It's inferior to the original, even with the great Ian under the make-up and that's inexcusable, just like the poor boba redub. For consistency's sake, I'd rather not see his bloated neck the way it is since that's not how it was in rotj. And he's the most evil SOB in the galaxy besides vader. Tell me which exudes more evilness...

Eh, the original looks like a comic version of what it should be. The new version isn't great, but the original isn't stellar either.

Don't get me wrong. I'd never argue the original scene was perfect, decent enough, but not perfect. I think that's why having the established emp actor do it and deliver such a PT-ish performance for the OT is so dissapointing.
