How feasible would it be to add Boba Fett to Endor? Perhaps with some fan film footage? Star Wars fan films love their forest settings.
Also how do you spoiler tag?
Have there ever been any attempts to replace the ANH Death Star explosion, to make it a little less of a “firecracker goes pop” affair and make it a bit larger and weightier?
And while we’re on it, something to ruin it down to looking more like the DS2 shell, for OT edits that want to go the ‘single death star’ route?

Yeah
Book of Boba Fett spoilers:
I was thinking of putting the scene of Boba’s hand reaching out of the sand from the first episode of BOBF after the sail barge scene and have him show up again on Endor.
Haven’t really kicked around the idea more than that since I’m not sure what footage could be reused for the Endor scenes for him.
The difficulty would be in finding something for him to do there that integrates with the existing Endor footage - his part in the story is done when he falls into the Sarlacc because that’s the resolution of the “Han in carbonite” narrative. He’d have to do something on Endor to give his reappearance a reason, I think.
Otherwise, (BoBF spoiler)
if you just want to have his hand emerge from the pit, I feel like it would be fine to leave it there, precisely because he doesn’t necessarily need to show up again in ROTJ.

Luckily the scene doesn’t have to be colorized, since we got that clip from the 40h anniversary BTS reel on the Star Wars YouTube channel.
In that clip, George’s voiceover continues into that scene, but the clip itself seems to begin on the tail end of Han’s line, "You like me because I’m a scoundrel. There aren’t enough scoundrels in your life."
Here is how the scene goes:
CLOSE-UP OF LEIA
LEIA: Afraid?
HAN: You’re trembling.
TWO SHOT OF HAN AND LEIA
LEIA: I’m not trembling.
HAN: You like me because I’m a scoundrel. There aren’t enough scoundrels in your life.
LEIA: I happen to like nice men.
HAN: I am a nice man.
LEIA: No you’re not. You’re-
Han kisses Leia. Cut to wide as 3PO interrupts them.
This is how the scene could go, with that alternate take.

ALTERNATE HAN AND LEIA TWO SHOT
HAN: -scoundrels in you’re life.
LEIA: I happen to like nice men.
HAN: I am a nice man.
LEIA: You are not nice. You are-
Han kisses Leia. Han pulls back, unsure of Leia’s reaction.
LEIA: Okay, hotshot.
Leia kisses Han back. Cut to wide as 3PO interrupts them.
I do like the alternate take, because it does show some vulnerability to Han. When he pulls back, he almost looks guilty, worried that he might’ve been too forward. He gulps, waiting for Leia’s reaction. Leia taking charge of the situation also fits Leia’s character better, I think. Sort of like how Leia took charge of her own rescue in ANH. And it also fits well with the continuity, since in the wide shot where 3PO interrupts them, Leia’s arm is around Han’s neck. She doesn’t put her arm around him in the theatrical close-up two shot, but she does in the alternate take.
At the very least, it would be cool to have this alternate take of this scene, even if you lose a line or two. I guess it then becomes a question of if you can get the color grade to match, and get the music/audio to fit in seamlessly.
Upscaling and restoration have come a long way in the short time since this was posted - heck, I’ve seen a Spider-Man meme group upscale and restore a bootlegged recording of No Way Home solely for the purposes of making higher quality memes. Has anyone taken a crack at upscaling and restoring this lately?

And here’s an attempt to integrate another Vader deleted scene with Luke going to Dagobah first.
So the first time we see him he’s basically the same character as on ESB.
https://streamable.com/5vc2kAgain, it needs some more audio work, etc, etc.
I think it’s a bit rushed for an introduction, but makes more sense character wise. Really depends on personal preference (spectacle vs substance).
Aside from the weird static effect on the shot of Vader walking down the hall, it actually looks really good.
I’m not really that much of a movie purist. I really should’ve thought my name out a bit more.

Coming back to this, I thought someone had repurposed Kijimi’s destruction from TROS as Alderaan - but when I looked at the footage, the laser in TROS is red. Did someone colour-correct it?

Had my hand at reordering plus moving forward the Luke and Biggs deleted scenes to later in the film where after Luke meets up with our R2 & 3PO. Trimmed all traces of talk about the battle overhead. Both scenes mixed into one

Here’s my test export. Watch it before I prejudice you with my comments:
The audio needs work, I need to tweak some of my lazy rotoscoping, and someone else should probably have a go at my colour correcting because I’m severely red-green colourblind.

I might swap the shots of the orbs exploding and the explosion racing up the tunnel, I think that would flow slightly better.

Wow, I like the sequence a lot. My initial reaction to watching the theatrical original is that u have this slight moment of u certainty because u don’t know if the proton torpedo would work and let alone save the rebel base in the Knick of time. Your sequence seems to portray this from tarkin’s pov. While he thinks victory was attained the viewer can appreciate for a few seconds it is quite the contrary.
How did u rotoscope the explosion starting at 0:18? Is it the same explosion that proceeds down another shaft several seconds later? And what program did you use? If im not mistaken, it looks like your explosion was manually drawn? I use Davinci resolve and for explosions, the Luma keyer works well for rotoscoping explosions in fusion page. For my low standards at least

I hadn’t consciously intended this, but a good analysis! I can see it.

I put this together in Premiere - all of the explosions are from their original source material.
(Hidden if you want to see the video before reading where it’s all from)
I used footage from Star Trek Discovery for the photon torpedo falling down the shaft, the hangar bay floor exploding is from Chernobyl with a new floor rotoscoped in, the large space with all the orb structures exploding is from Battlefield Earth, the final explosion of the whole Death Star is from Man of Steel with the Death Star rotoscoped in, and all the remaining shots are from the 1996 Keanu Reeves action movie Chain Reaction. I just colour corrected some elements in some shots - the Battlefield Earth shots are originally highly saturated purple, and the shaft that you’re talking about was originally terracotta brown in Chain Reaction.
However, the fact that you assumed the effects were custom made hopefully indicates I’ve done a decent job at combining it all!

I havent caught up far enough into Star Trek discovery to notice lol. And same for the other movies, I haven’t seen them except Man of Steel (which is awesome).
So the only tidbit I can give for the explosion at 0:18 is that u have the orange explosion roto’d but you don’t have the orange/yellow surrounding light/flare that precedes the explosion. Whereas if u look at the next explosion down the shaft, it’s present and looks more natural
I think the concept is good but the execution needs work. One thing that I think is a dealbreaker is any shot that’s clearly a modern installation. It should not look like Earth architecture. There were also some explosions that weren’t properly chromakeys.
The only thing I’m not too keen on with that sequence is that Chernobyl shot (just because I could pinpoint where it was from right away and it just seemed jarring with the comp’d in floor).
Speaking of recognition though, I’ve seen a couple of people use the Krypton explosion for MOS for the Death Star. But wow… Yours is probably the best integration of that I’ve seen! It was seamless.

Yeah, I only did a very cursory job with the colour correction using the tools already in Premiere. I can always do a better job of them if I invest the time, but I wanted to get a proof-of-concept out. I also agree about the Earth architecture, but the explosion in that shot worked so well for my purposes that to me it was worth the trade off. Everyone’s mileage will vary, of course.

The comped-in floor needs work to make it more seamless; it’s the slightly mismatched movement that gives it away. And thank you! I’d never actually put this into a serious edit of ANH, but if I did, I think it would just be the Krypton explosion shot.

That alternate take looks awesome. Adds so much depth to the scene and works better with their characters. Would love to watch it integrated back into the film.

I doubt it: the Mandalore flashback clearly shows the planet being exterminated by droids rather than just exploding. It could be useful for a “single Death Star” edit where the only Death Star is the incomplete one from ROTJ, in order to have something else destroy Alderaan, but for a normal edit it’s probably useless.

If you were gonna replace one line from a stormtrooper somewhere in the OT with something from Temeura Morrison, what would it be and what would be the source for the line?
Perhaps “there’s no one here” as they conclude searching the Falcon. I’m sure there’d at least be a rough equivalent to that line available.

Maybe “Blast 'em!” when chasing Luke et al on the Death Star; there’d definitely be something analogous for that.
Related idea: subtly replace the two stormtroopers talking in the background by the tractor beam controls with Dee Bradley Baker having a conversation with himself.

Why is there no edit of Boba Fett in ROTJ to make his “death” less terrible?
I find it interesting that no fan has done any edit over the past 40 years. Especially now with the Boba interest peaking.
Like, for example, have him at least try to shoot Luke a few times from a distance before just dropping in front of him to be Mace Windued?
Surely over the past 4 decades of video games and commercials and such, there has to be some footage that’s usable.
An idea I would like to eventually play around with is to reuse the footage of Luke getting his hand shot, but have Boba be the one to shoot his hand instead of some random guard on the sail barge.
Basically, a summary of changes I’ve thought of making:
And of course, you would remove his hand getting shot later on since we have placed it sooner.
You could make an argument that you might need to add Luke’s hand injury to any shots where we might see it, but we actually don’t see his injury on his hand after it gets shot even in the theatrical, so I wouldn’t say it is priority.
I would try and make any new blaster shots or any other new effects fit with the 1983 look. Nothing super modern looking.
It is still goofy that he goes in close range when he could’ve taken him out from a distance, but that’s Star Wars for you. If you wanted to rationalize it, you could perhaps give Boba a line or two during this scene. Maybe he could say something like, “He’s worth a lot” (that way you could use both the original and new dubs), implying that Boba might use the chaos to claim the bounty, that certainly must exist on Luke, for himself. This also makes Boba appear more self-serving rather just a Jabba lackey.
If that didn’t work, you could maybe reuse “He’s no good to me dead” or make it “He’s good to me dead” or just “He’s dead”. Boba works better when he says little, but these are just some ideas.
Building off of Boba ideas, I also had the idea of Boba being the one to catch Han and Leia trying to escape, rather than Jabba and literally everyone else in the entire palace hiding behind currents. When Han and Leia turn around to leave, you could reuse a shot of Boba standing in the palace, and point his gun at them, then cut back and show him raising his gun back up, knowing that he has them where he wants them. You would lose a minute of footage from this change though, and any runtime worth keeping may be crucial to keep one’s edit from being too short.
I may try to make Boba’s “death scene” my next project, whenever I have the time. Even though ROTJ is sort of the black sheep of the Original Trilogy, I still feel like there isn’t a definitive edit for this film that does a better job at putting it as close as possible to Star Wars and Empire in terms of quality.
Nice ideas, rogueleader. A scene like that would be immensely popular on youtube, especially as everyone’s looking up Boba Fett scenes.
