TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 101

I appreciate all the work that Nev did on his Starlight project, and it’s really cool as an alternative version of episode VII. But as someone who likes the original TFA I still prefer Hal’s conservative approach as more of an improved cut of the same film rather than a radical reinterpretation.

I’d also add to the others that I’d prefer BB-8’s thumbs up remain the same, I love that little moment and I’d hate to see it tampered. The other changes seem sensible enough, another small change I’d like to see from Starlight is the darker lighting on the Rathtar sequence.

The thing about the thumbs up is that removing it helps a later change about Han needing a “clean ship.” The lighter joke is still there!

But I’ll take a good look and think about what I feel belongs in Restructured, erring on the side of excluding things in order to maintain its role as ‘mostly conservative.’

I would argue for the Han Dice scene just for the sheer amount of fan work put in to restore it. Very impressive!

Plus it makes it so that the relevance of the dice in TLJ isn’t completely out of left field.

I thought the idea was that Han could take them there but he just doesn’t want to get too involved, which is why Maz refuses to help him. That’s why the pointless “clean ship” line could be removed with no other changes.

This has always been my interpretation too. I don’t want to sound like I’m Testing anybody’s patience by saying that though; the point of fanediting is to alter things to be interpreted differently.

Well, technically it’s already altered since on the theatrical they had that ADR line about getting a “clean ship” as the reason for visiting Maz. So what I’m saying is there’s no need to alter it any further.

In Restructured as it stands, Finn and Rey know where the Resistance base is located, but go to Maz’s castle anyway. Han just says, “If you want to get BB8 to the Resistance, Maz Kanata is our best bet.” And then he asks her to get the droid to Leia. But Maz tells him to do it himself, catching him in trying to pass the back and implying he could have done it himself.

Eh… I guess that makes enough sense.

I appreciate the feedback on these ideas. I think I will go ahead and use the dice scene, due to the sheer fan magic involved. Nev bothered to include a message in the first post of Starlight’s thread saying anyone may freely use any parts of it, so I’ll take that as license to just determine for myself what is good to import to this.

I didn’t do any editing today but did inspect things and determine what I plan to steal from Nev’s project. These are hopefully unobjectable changes that won’t ruin TFA:R’s niche for anyone. If anyone would like me to share reasons for not using this or that other change, I can.

  • Poe’s ladder retracting

  • The glow before Kylo activates his saber to kill the guy I was convinced was playing Ric Olié is removed.

  • Undo the dawn effect when Finn wakes up on Jakku, since it should be later the same day as Rey is already at the outpost. Having it be daybreak only works if you restructure scene like Nev does.

  • Remove “cute boyfriend” repetition.

  • Use the Han dice scene, for the fanmade magic. I’m not wild about using music from Solo, but it works for the moment, and Williams did write that theme.

  • Shorten Maz’s trek across the table

  • Add the new shot of the pirate ship to show Rey intends to follow Finn (really cool)

  • Restructure end of Maz battle with Finn running earlier.

  • After “bring him home,” new quick scene of Kylo watching the weapon charge, using two shots deleted from other scenes.

  • Use a few new shots for the SKB firing sequence, to no longer rely on a reused shot of Leia. Also, I will use his Leia reaction shot that paints out a casual background extra, and hopefully use his version of the way the music ends as it goes along well with Leia’s movements.

  • Use the cool shot with the binary beacon from TLJ.

  • Add to Rey’s Force vision several overt mentions that she is Palpatine’s granddaughter.

Love these changes!!!

Just out of curiosity, why do you not like the Kylo on the Falcon scene? 😂😂😂

Are these shots recolored to match the sundraining instead of SKB firing? In the shot Nev used there is still a red glow but it should be more yellowish.

I also would personally add back in the deleted scene of Kylo Ren on the Falcon with the three new added shots from Starlight of the exterior and switches.

Also, NeverarGreat added a sound effect of the First Order Star Destroyer coming out of hyperspace over Takodana. This makes it more believable as to why Finn and everyone else looks up in the sky, as the sound catches their attention.

There’s also a VFX shot of a panel lighting up in the Falcon when Finn climbs down into the turret room. Han deactivates it later on when he arrives on the ship.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Personally I think the dice scene feels a bit too edited, like, it’s so different from the rest of the movie. It’s amazing what Nev was able to cobble together, and it fits great in Starlight where there are other major changes, but I wonder if it would feel too out of place here.

Also, I don’t mind the dice only being a thing in TLJ. They’re replaced by Han’s medal by episode IX anyway so there’s no real throughline to keep there. If anything having them in both VII and VIII would just make them feel absent from IX.

Have to disagree there. The last time we see the dice in VIII they’re a Force projection that disappears after Luke is gone. The real dice could have made it to Leia by the time of IX but to see them reappear after dramatically disappearing in VIII would have been confusing to general audiences.

I’m all for seeing the scene restored in Restructured.

I don’t really feel a need to use the falcon deleted scene, even though it’s effective in Starlight. It feels kind of superfluous to me.

I will attempt to make that shot of Kylo less red, and if I can’t I won’t use that little snippet.

I convinced myself of the added sound effect for the Star Destroyer while typing this. lol

The panel on the falcon lighting up is so subtle, that I don’t really feel the need to use it. To me, the falcon going to lightspeed is enough, as it is enough for Han to find and he references this later… in a line that has been cut. Hmm, okay, yeah, that does make sense now. I’ll use it.

And the dice scene is something cool, but I can’t tell if it’s just me that finds it just slightly weird. I plan to use it but I’m on the fence.

If you’re not using the Kylo Falcon scene, what about the etching of Ahch-To that Rey made in her hideout?

The reason you probably find the dice scene weird is because the whole film pauses for a moment that really has no meaning unless you’ve seen Solo or until you’ve seen TLJ.

That etching is really cool, but I don’t wish to strip it and use it myself, as it isn’t totally necessary.

And yeah… I gotta admit the dice scene is just this side of totally working, and I would like to avoid this feeling like a fan edit, even though that dice scene is hella cool.

Won’t that spoil what’s supposed to be a twist in TRoS?

Been awhile, but wanted to check in on things! I read a bit on the discussion about Nev’s excellent work at restoring scenes. My thought is the same as you Hal. Granted, the work Nev did is remarkable, but it’s really the shot of the scene that sticks out. The camera position looks more like a “behind the scenes” kinda shot or a documentary style that makes it feel “off” when it comes to implementing it. Again, great work and it has it’s merits, but it’s really the actual shot/camera positioning that doesn’t personally jive for me.

Pretty sure it’s meant to be a joke.

Dub in Luke saying “Rey, you’re a Palpatine” in Rey’s Force Vision, so that way nobody can complain later that it wasn’t set up earlier.

Dub over Leia saying “Rey, you’re a Palpatine” before Rey leaves for Ach-To.

In TROS Ascendant v3, reinstate Luke saying “You’re a Palpatine. Leia knew too,” followed by a flashback to the edited TFA scene, implying that Rey had just forgot Leia said that and is now being reminded.

Regarding the dice scene maybe it’ll blend better if we were to extend slighty the part were Han looks down at the dice for pacing and also darken the lighting on Han in the exterior shot.
