Prequel Special Editions

This might be a strange topic considering this is a forum for the preservation of the Original Trilogy, but I wonder how many people would be interested in Special Editions of the Prequels where they used current technology to improve the special effects and possibly reinserted a few deleted scenes.

I don’t entirely hate the idea of the Special Editions. I remember being excited for them in the late 90s. If they kept to only improving a few effects and choosing a few of the best deleted scenes to include, I wouldn’t mind them at all. It’s mainly the changing of scenes I don’t like such as Greedo shooting first, the addition of new scenes like Jedi Rocks, and most of all, the suppression of the original versions.

I know the prequels aren’t as popular in these parts. They’ve grown on me, and I think opinions continue to improve. Not sure a theatrical run plus disc sales of Prequel Special Editions would be enough compensation to make it a profitable endeavor. I’m sure there are already fan projects of some sort though.

I would love this. I was disappointed (though understanding) when Ady cancelled his Prequels:Revisited plans, and similarly when Aalenfae’s prequel edits fell apart due to computer failure, which were something like what you’re envisioning. I think it’s been talked about before around here as well, particularly as regards using alternate takes of scenes, in the faint hope that alternate takes might suck less; I have my doubts.

Of course, it’ll never happen.

How is either video edit of Phantom Menace not a special edition. Added scenes that slowed down the pace of the film and in the second video edit adding CGI Yoda.

I kinda don’t see how it would improve the PT enough for it to be worth the effort

Make characterizations more consistent with TCW?

The deleted scenes improve characterization and story a lot. Trim some of the “humor” and video game-like sequences and you get a decent narrative, although a bit long. Some effects need updating with better CGI, but that’s not a problem, they have all the assets…

Would work best if edited into episodes by someone like Filoni who understands and likes the universe, but a long movie like Snyder’s Justice League would also be interesting. I’d watch it…

Do they? The only deleted scenes I can think of that actually improve the prequels are the Padme scenes from RotS. Giving her more agency is a good thing, but they don’t go anywhere. Maybe there could be more deleted scenes which give the Delegation of 2000 more purpose that we just haven’t seen, but I kind of doubt that. Padme was cut down because Natalie Portman was asking for more money than George wanted to give her, so I wouldn’t be surprised if most of this plotline went unfilmed.

Most of the other deleted scenes were cut for a reason. TPM and AotC are far better off without any of the deleted scenes (that we know about I suppose), and that’s including the ones that were re-inserted on re-releases. I feel like re-inserting deleted scenes would just be bloat.

Wait, really? Where did you hear that?

There are one or two deleted scenes I would’ve liked. I remember there being one where Anakin and Padme are brought before Count Dooku after being captured, and Dooku basically explains his political views to them, telling Padme how the Republic can’t be saved and the galaxy needs a fresh start, or something to that effect. I don’t remember it too well, but any extra character development for Count Dooku is more than welcome.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

For AotC, I would really like if they went and finished the extended talk between Obi-Wan and Jocasta Nu, where they discuss Count Dooku before he left the Order, his similarities to Qui-Gon and the ideological reasons why he quit. That, along with the Geonosis scene with Padmé and Dooku, would do wonders to flesh out the Count as an antagonist who had a point to be made.

A masterpiece, if I ever saw one.

(Seriously, though, this is hilarious. You can tell they put in a ton of effort and had a blast making this.)

I guess I’m making assumptions. In 2017 there was a leak of an earlier draft of Revenge of the Sith where Padme had a much bigger role, but was cut down because Natalie Portman was asking for more money. Happened before with Anthony Daniels in ESB. But I don’t actually know that that has anything to do with the deleted scenes, or that anything from that draft was filmed, so I shouldn’t have made that assumption.

George talked briefly about this when The Phantom Menace was re-released in 3D.

https://youtu.be/ihqV2v6CIM0

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas
