“The only family you have here is me.”

Not sure how that line works in this context?

It could work as in Rey only having Palpatine to be with. He could’ve said something like that to Vader after losing Padmé.

Don’t have anything to share yet, but working on the audio edit of Rey taking about her vision with Finn gave me the urge to work on Rey Nobody a little more.

I’m currently messing with the Force bond duel scene, which I think is the most difficult scene to alter, because you’re having to actually change the narrative somewhat, and not just cut lines.

I might have something to show sooner rather than later, but this scene is a real pain in the ass. Many of Kylo’s lines “echo” in the other channels, so even if you change/cut lines in the primary dialogue channel, you can still sort of hear them in the other channels. Which means you would have to basically replace the music, sound effects, and dialogue reverb in a few parts of that scene.

With that being said, I still think it’s doable, but if I share a test with y’all, it definitely will be a “test” and nowhere close to final. I’m curious how other people who have tried editing this scene have tackled this issue.

Hey RL, not sure how this is coming along, or what your new intention for the Kylo Quarter Duel even is, but I had a thought. Rather than replacing the dialogue with new lines, what if we just, ya know, cut most of the scene out? Kylo says, “Where are you?” They clash a couple of times. “You can’t hide from me.” Few more swings. Rey hits the Vader pedestal. “So that’s where you are.” Rey manages to shut down the connection. Kylo turns to the trooper, “She’s in my quarters, lock down the ship.”

Do we even need to explore her backstory, or her parents, or have any meaningful conversation here at all? All of the stuff relevant to this movie comes in the next scene anyway when he’s all like, “We’ll kill Palpatine together.”

In fact, I almost wonder if the Hanger Scene will play out even better this way. As it is, Kylo says, “I’m gonna be right there, Rey, and then we have stuff to talk about. Cool?” So then when they have their little face-off in the hanger, you’re just waiting for them to chat. On the other hand, if you make the Quarter Duel about just tracking Rey down, and end it with an ominous “There you are…” - and also consider that the last time they met on Pasanna, he tried to turn her into roadkill - when he appears in the next scene in person, the audience is waiting with baited breath for him to attack. But then…he starts talking? He’s suggesting they team up to kill Palpatine?? Holy shit, this was completely unexpected. What’s going to happen next?

Relies on the surrounding rescue of Chewie being re-edited a bit but I like keeping this sequence intact anyway: https://vimeo.com/549085906

Sherlock, that is a GREAT idea. And it also adds another level to her looking shocked during that Hangar Scene. She’s stunned that Kylo is telling her that they will kill Palpatine together just as we’re stunned as well.

Hey Sherlock! Long time no talk. I’ve had a big life change recently so I have been away from fan editing projects the past few months. But, luckily I’m not on the road as much anymore, and I literally just brought my computer to my new apartment last night. Life is busy (maybe even more so now than before), but I might have time to sit down and play around with the Rey Nobody stuff when I have free time.

Something I was wanting to do with that scene is to replace the parent stuff with an actual reason that Rey might join Kylo and fall to the dark side. I felt like you could replace the parent flashbacks with Kylo elaborating on the vision they had at the beginning of the film (or at least in this version). In this version, they both would have seen visions of the battle of Exegol, and the Resistance losing. So, Kylo would make Rey doubt that she can defeat Palpatine on her own.

So in that version, Kylo tells/shows her that the Resistance will fail. Then in the hangar, he tells her that if she joins him, they will succeed. This would begin to make this fate feel inevitable, especially if the alternative is the death of her friends. Plus, we have a more solid reason why Rey might turn beyond just having darkness in her.

I think trimming the scene is definitely an option, and something other fan editors have done before. I know Dom did this very slightly in his edit (the parent talk is still there). I believe joshuabri did something similar in his Palpatine-less edit as well. I can’t recall the seamlessness of either, though, which would be my main concern. Are we noticing obvious cross fading in the music? Weird continuity?

You could start the scene like Dom started his version, and then fill the rest of the scene with various taunts from Kylo whenever necessary. I think cutting around the whole “It was Palpatine” bit is the more challenging part to cut around. Perhaps you cut find a good place to cut together their clashes before and after their pause in the fight. Maybe before their sabers hit and the set changes to Kijimi. That might be a way to avoid the dramatic music swell from when we see her parents getting killed.
(Cut at 01:01:18 up to 01:01:47 maybe?)

This might be necessary if we can’t find a good way to get around the way Kylo’s lines echo into the other tracks. Has anyone properly worked around this problem before? Anyway, it might be cool to see if someone could cut around that whole moment I mentioned earlier.

Hello! I know, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I feel like a lot of people (myself included) just sort of fell off for a little while there for various reasons, but hopefully we’ll have more time in the future. Good luck with the new setup!

That sounds really awesome though - I forgot that the vision in the beginning now foreshadows some of the Exegol battle, so discussing that and dissecting both parts of the vision across the two scenes sounds like a good way to go. Helps to draw attention to the battle too, so people like me who might have missed it at first would be caught up to speed.

As for trimming it down, I think it would depend on how much footage you need for your new dialogue - if you’ll need the footage underneath “It was Palpatine all along.” then we should focus on just removing the dialogue; but if you don’t need that extra time, we can look for a point at which to cut it entirely. Once you have the audio locked in how you want it to sound, we can figure out how best to edit it so that the scene has the right momentum.

So I’ve seen a few attempts at replacing the dialog for the climactic reveal in the star destroyer hangar and it always falls flat, so I was wondering if maybe we could cut that exchange completely?

Author
Time

I do think a big issue with the hangar scene is to substitute the reveal with something that is equally as substantial. The music and reaction implies something climatic, so if we can’t invent a suitable reveal, could we simply re-edit the scene to remove that moment? I believe someone has tried this before, but I think an issue is to cut around that moment and music in a way that is unnoticeable.

Could the whole scene be rescored? Or are the dialog and music too heavily integrated into the same audio channels?

An idea I had today was to make the reveal that Kylo and Rey are a dyad. Could that work?

I feel like it would fall flat. The audience doesn’t know what “a dyad in the Force” even is, let alone its significance to them as characters.

Yeah, not much weight to a reveal such as that. I still think that attempt someone put together on the thread here where it’s revealed that Rey will kill Palpatine and take the Sith throne works well.

So here are the hangar scene options I’ve seen:

-Kylo tells Rey she will turn evil
-Rey finds out she killed her parents
-Kylo offers to kill Palpatine with Rey
-Cut the scene entirely

I think the scene is necessary to give Rey an arc for this movie, so I would try to go for the first one. It’s also the best mockup I’ve seen of this scene, but it still sounds a little off. I think once this and the force duel are done it will be easy to cut around the other stuff from there, we just have to pick one narrative and go for it.

I think it depends on what versions of VII & VIII you pair it with. If it goes after something like Starlight Project, which as I understand it more clearly ties Rey’s instinctive abilities to the dark side, then her self-doubts about her potential can come to a head naturally on their own. But if it goes with a more conservative edit of the previous plots, then I don’t think anything less than revealing she killed her parents can sell her fears of going bad.

I think when everything is done my preferred trilogy will be TFA Starlight + theatrical TLJ with some minor trims and deleted scene additions and Ascendant V2 with the Rey Palpatine storyline removed. So I personally think the best option is the Kylo tells Rey she’s gonna turn dark one, but there’s nothing stopping us from trying all of them. I think the Rey killed her parents is little bit harder to pull off but I think it can be done. I’m not as good an audio editor as some people here, but is there a list of scenes that need to be worked on for this? I could try some in premiere or something.

Hey there, I’m new to the forum, also motivated to make a Rey Nobody cut of the movie, lately I have been working on the ending of the movie, using Hal9000’s edit and Flash Sideways’s video on youtube “Just Rey”, I managed to make the best of both edits and that’s the final result.

That works pretty good. Honestly I think the Rey Skywalker stuff works fine in a Rey Nobody cut because it plays into her feeling worthy of carrying on the legacy of both the Skywalker’s and the Jedi, but I could see that being used in different Rey nobody cuts.

I was thinking, I wonder if there’s some way to use Rey’s horrible, drunk parents in TLJ to help lure her to the Dark Side in Rey Nobody. Like, a really obvious character thread for anyone who isn’t Chris Terrio is for Kylo or Palpsters to say “Your parents abandoned you. Doesn’t that fill you with anger and hatred?” Or “You have no family, all alone. Join me.” Or heck even, “Take the Throne, rule over the galaxy, and you can ensure that no one else will ever be forsaken again. Like you were.”

I don’t know if the dialogue exists anywhere (it’s probably easier to just ignore her parents entirely), but it might be interesting to tie it all back together like that. TFA - the trilogy starts with Rey fantasizing about her lineage, TLJ - she realizes that she’ll have to make her own path instead of inheriting one, and TROS - she has to decide which path to walk. Besides, I think “Parents selling child for drinking money -> Child falls to the Dark Side out of resentment” is a much more logical progression than “Parents sacrifice themselves to save child from the Dark Side -> Child falls to the Dark Side…for reasons.” Logical, that is, for anyone who isn’t Chris Terrio.

Yeah I hear people say that Rey’s parents need to be good so she has a reason to hate Palpatine but I think there’s plenty of reasons to hate palpatine other than that. I love Rey’s parents being awful people and getting a line of dialogue like that would bring it together really nicely. You might need an impersonator or something to get it though cause its kinda specific.

Let’s not let Abrams off the hook here. His name is on the script too.

Isn’t this what Kylo does in TLJ? “You’re nothing… but not to me.”

Not exactly. My take on the TLJ scene was that Kylo was telling her, “Your parents left you. You’re not special. You’re all alone. But you and I can be friends.” In TROS, my thought was to transition the issue from “Aren’t you sad that you’re alone?” to “Your parents were horrible to you. Doesn’t that make you angry?” Kind of like Anakin being sad about his mom - that turning into anger, into hate, etc.

“It’s like poetry, it rhymes.”
