I’d love if we got more High republic news tomorrow. i can’t get enough of it.

The only high republic stuff I’ve read is the comic series. It’s pretty good so far, I’m interested to see where it goes, and how it will tie in with the novels.

I forgot to say I finished Light of the Jedi the other day. A great springboard into this exciting new era.

SPOILERS:

Marchion Ro is already one of the most interesting Star Wars villains for me. I also really took a liking to Loden Greatstorm, so his capture is a massive cliffhanger! I love the master-apprentice relationship between Loden and Bell and Bell being on the front cover of the sequel book The Rising Storm makes me very excited for what’s to come, with Bell hopefully trying his hardest to rescue Loden and being challenged along the way. The final battle in the novel was brilliant - a Republic victory, yet one which leaves them horrified and confused, and apparently not the victory that it seemed at first, either.

I’ve been thinking recently that we need more Star Wars stories that are impeccably planned out, like Rebels. The High Republic project is that pre-planned story. I hear they’ve even got 3 phases planned for it, including The Acolyte in ‘phase 2’, and all the novel and comic writers have worked very closely and seem to be great friends. This is gonna be great.

Just read High Republic #1. Absolutely floored by it. It’s fantastic. Everything is colourful, and bright, and creative and refreshing and new, and I love Keeve Trennis. She’s so very likeable. The story is compelling, the story of Sskeer being set up is compelling, and there are so many great moments like Keeve’s knighthood and the final ‘For Light and Life’ scene.

This era is amazing! Fantastic work by Cavan Scott and Ario Anindito, as well as the other artists working on the series.

“The new mini-series from Daniel José Older, Star Wars: The High Republic: Trail Of Shadows, will introduce the mystery fiction genre into the new era of Star Wars storytelling as the Jedi call upon one of their own, Emerick Caphtor, to investigate a strange mystery with ties to the Jedi Order. At the same time, Chancellor Lina Soh calls upon Sian Holt, a high-end, in-demand private detective to look into the same mystery. But will either solve this riddle before anyone else dies?”

All this Wave Two stuff is looking very interesting. Although I’m on this thread far too much, I admit I’m behind on High Republic stories. I’ve been reading through the main High Republic comics by Cavan Scott but haven’t started on the Adventures ones yet, so I don’t know for myself how much I like Daniel José Older’s writing. However, from my experience with him on social media, he’s an absolutely lovely person who interacts with many HR fans in a very friendly way. And - like everything from this era so far - his work seems to have gone down very well. I also love when Star Wars branches off into different genres, be it b-movie space horror or Star Trek adventure in the Clone Wars episodes Brain Invaders and Overlords, so a detective story is very welcome (even though we have had it before, of course).

Honestly, off the point about Daniel José Older being really nice, that could be said about all the High Republic authors. For me, the most heartwarming thing about this whole project is that all the writers - Charles Soule, Cavan Scott, Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland and DJO - collaborate closely and seem to be great friends. They’re enjoying it so much and it shows. I’m just glad I get to help make the High Republic project a success for them.

The High Republic: The Rising Storm – Book Review by Fabio Fiori at https://tatooinetimes.com/

https://tatooinetimes.com/star-wars-reviews/the-high-republic-the-rising-storm-book-review/

“The Rising Storm (the author’s very first Del Rey Star Wars novel) is probably Scott’s greatest achievement … through and through an absolute masterpiece … This next installment of The High Republic is an essential must-read and one that will without a doubt take its place among the best Star Wars stories of all time.”

Also, interestingly, it seems to be very dark - “Scott’s utterly graphic description of each horrific act is at a level never seen in Star Wars publishing”

The Rising Storm review: An emotional page-turner from beginning to end by Tom Farr at https://dorksideoftheforce.com/

“The Rising Storm is the best kind of Star Wars book. Emotional. Rising stakes from beginning to end. Foreshadowing the Skywalker saga. Deepening the Jedi mythology. A classic page-turner.”

Very good news recently that Claudia Gray will be writing the next main High Republic novel, The Fallen Star. I have some of her Star Wars books but haven’t got round to reading them just yet; from what I hear she’s perhaps the best author from the Disney SW era.

Meanwhile, I’ve just started Cavan Scott’s The Rising Storm and am on chapter 7. I’m enjoying it, and although it hasn’t taken off for me just yet I’m certain it will. I keep seeing people talking about how dark it is and that the last few chapters are devastating, so frankly, I have a bad feeling about this…

Daniel José Older describes his next book, Midnight Horizon, as a noir. I think this could potentially be my favorite of the bunch.

We also got some cover reveals! https://www.starwars.com/news/the-fallen-star-and-other-book-covers-revealed-on-the-star-wars-the-high-republic-show

I’m still not quite sure what to think about The Fallen Star’s cover. My first reaction was to be very impressed, but now it’s not a surprise revelation anymore it looks almost like a digital mockup awaiting detail for some reason. Perhaps some reflection on the characters’ eyes might have helped.

The ‘Grushkov Music’ YouTube channel has composed some music as a soundtrack to Light of the Jedi. I’m listening to it right now and can tell it would be very nice to have in the background as you read. I always love to see when it’s clear a lot of time, effort and love has been poured into a fan project like this.

By the way, I’ve finally started Into the Dark. I’ve kept up with the main novels (LOTJ and TRS so far) and the comic releases but it’s a lot to keep track off and this is the first of the novels outside of the central story I’ve read. I already love Reath and it’s great Claudia Gray has chosen to focus on those who prefer reading about adventures rather than living them!

Reviews are starting to come in for The Fallen Star, and surprisingly - especially for a Claudia Gray book - it might be one of the weaker entries in the High Republic project so far. Apparently it’s still enjoyable, but more straightforward and lacking in scale than Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm.

Here’s a good spoiler-free review by Jordan Maison to temper your expectations:

Fallen Star reviews look pretty good over on Goodreads so far (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58652192), but I’ll know for sure when my copy is delivered today. Claudia Gray (Lost Stars, Master and Apprentice) is my favorite Star Wars author by far and I really liked her previous High Republic book, Into the Dark.

We’ve had a whole year of the High Republic, and what a year it’s been.

For a while, it’s only been Rodney, Jason, and myself posting in this thread, so I’m curious - has anyone else been keeping up with the novels, and what have you thought so far?

“This is what hope is. It isn’t pretending nothing will go wrong if only we try hard enough. It’s looking squarely at the obstacles in the way - knowing the limits of our own power, and the possibility of failure - and moving ahead anyway. That is how we must proceed. With hope.” - Jedi Master Stellan Gios
