Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 88

Thanks folks! It leads on nicely from this part earlier in my edit where Palpatine and the mask are being more explicitly linked from the outset, though a first time viewer wouldn’t yet know that: https://vimeo.com/549080534

So when he returns to Vader’s mask after the events of TLJ, he searches “deeper” and thinks he is discovering more about the presence speaking to him.

Hooooly sh!t. I would kill to have this added to Hal’s cut of TFA. This is what the sequels needed. Moments of foreshadowing and hints at what’s to come.

It doesn’t look like a vision. It’s just confusing. And while I assume it was that way in the theatrical cut, having Kylo’s theme burst open specifically on the shot of Vader’s helmet is kinda weird. Shouldn’t it be the Imperial March?

I’m fine with it being ambiguous.

The music has also been changed, yes. Kylo’s theme here borrowed from TLJ rather than the understated cue of Vader’s theme is relatively appropriate given it’s the first time the audience really gains any insight into why Ren is the way he is in this edit. I don’t much care for the sequels’ approach of flatly stating the expected themes when familiar symbols appear, so I wanted to change it up just a little.

I’m wondering if all visions need some form of edge blur filter to indicate it’s a vision? They never used it in the original films but I feel it would add a layer of detail.

Agreed. I’m not a fan of the music being used to be like “hey guys remember this”.

The only time they’ve ever really done this is with Anakin’s dead wife dreams in ROtS:

But I don’t think I’d be a fan of applying that liberally elsewhere… Within the context of my edit I think it makes a bit more sense as I started introducing insert shots of visions and flashbacks a lot earlier in TFA to mesh better with their increasing use in the later films.

Yeah, I’ve done the same but I can’t make up my mind if flashbacks need something to indicated. I feel Padme scene was a little overdone but I guess that shows the audience that the vision is destroyed and blurry.

I find the most effective route for flashbacks is a slight vignette around the footage and drop the saturation enough to distinguish the now vs then.

The Padme scene is extremely blurry and distant because the vision isn’t supposed to be clear. A clear vision would have a much more understated border haze. And yes, I think it would help, particularly with the Exegol temple vision edit we were just discussing. It would solve my biggest issue with it.

On different note, I’m not sure if I’ve brought this up before but I was just thinking, in edits that add Palpatine stuff into TLJ and maybe even TFA, his introduction right off the bat with “The dead speak!” can be kept and expanded upon. What am I talking about? Why the Fortnite message, of course. If we could isolate it from the music, it would work perfectly as a cold open. Lucasfilm logo, A long time ago yadda yadda, then black screen. After a second we hear his speech, still with no images. Then smash cut to the Star Wars logo with fanfare and proceed as usual.

I like that idea!

Goddamit, i wish we could have gotten his audio in good quality. There has to be someone we could contact who could supply us with the clean audio.

Not too long ago someone here got us tons of c3p0 audio.

That was done by ripping it out of the local files of VR game. The Fortnite thing was a limited time only event inside the game so the files were likely just streamed, and only the event recorded. Sad!

That’s extremely cool.

I thought I was going to be perfectly happy with Ascendant for my definitive personal viewing the cut, but people are making so many great changes and additions that don’t fit with Ascendant’s overall mission statement that I think I’m going to have to end up making my own personal cut.

Not radical or anything but has anyone thought of using this brief unused shot of Luke from TLJ teaser?

I think it would well as build up to when he throws back the saber.

Has anyone tried putting Palpatine chuckling or something during the looming shot of Vader’s helmet in TFA?

(If you come across this, Sparky, I don’t think this, specifically, would ruin TLJ’s hope message, as it could be interpreted as Palps’ spirit inhabiting Vader’s helmet until TRoS when Palps talks about the voices.)

Have mentioned it before in other threads but my sequel edit does some things to obliquely link Palpatine, Kylo and Vader’s helmet from the outset:
Kylo’s vision in TFA: https://vimeo.com/549080534
Palpatine summoning Kylo to Exegol: https://vimeo.com/554625583

I’d kill to have Palpatine stuff be added (specifically that part you added in bbghost) into Hal9000’s cut of TFA
