I might extend the final shot down to two shots: The Falcon flying off from the homestead, and another showing it flying away from the planet itself into hyperspace, for more adventures to come.

This might give extra room for the score and to keep the pace relatively smoother and not make it feel too much of a rushed ending.

(I might need help finding some footage of dusk sunsets on a pretty flat-looking desert)

Also, I’m pretty sure the Tatooine suns would be in the horizon of the homestead during sunset as shown in ANH.

Oh that would be cool…kind of a reverse of the Falcon at the beginning of the movie, then? Where it went from hyperspace, panned right to left across the screen, and went towards a planet; but now it would go from Tatooine, pan left to right across the screen, and then blast into hyperspace? Yeah, that would be awesome!

It’s a sunsRISE, Hal. Ya know, The Rise of Skywalker? Lol.

Semantics aside, I wonder if it was always intended to be one though. Maybe the novelization retconed it to be a sunrise instead of a sunset.

In the film itself is very clearly a sunrise.

Tell that to Dat SW Guy, I agree with you. He’s the one doing the visual effects.

What? I don’t see how that’s relevant to DSWG at all. You said you weren’t sure if it was intended to be a sunrise. I was responding to you. It definitely was.

Well from what I understand DSWG believes it to be a sunset even in the film. I never was convinced that it was a sunset - I was simply pondering something about the filmmaking process.

Anyways, in my second response there I was just pointing out that he is the one who needs convincing, not me.

I think ending the trilogy and saga on something other than a Tatooine sunset/sunrise is a win.

I attempted to recreate the lighting of the Falcon in TROS using Blender 2.92, it somewhat looks more like a miniature than a CG ship. I’m planning on probably fixing the last shot wherein it will fly away from Tatooine, but instead of the sunset, it would go straight into hyperspace from space.

WOW… That looks amazing! I’m all for extending the final shot in order to put the full music cue in there (which is one of the minor nitpicks I’ve had about this project).

And y’know… If you happen to get some models for some other ships in the film (i.e. Bestoon Legacy, Kylo’s TIE Silencer, Luke’s X-Wing, etc.) we could maybe start implementing the idea of maybe adding some take off/landing shots that some people have brought up to help pad out the flow of the movie a little bit.

Really nice work Dat_SW_Guy. It’s amazing what people can do using Blender.

I think Kylo had the Whisper in TROS, not the Silencer. I’ve been looking for a good model of this for months but no luck. If anyone finds one please let me know.

Seems like the bodily return of Palpatine and Sith spirit transfer is redundant. Palpatine was brought back for marketing, rather than story, reasons.

Is it a possibility to change Palpatine’s final line to something along the lines of “I am the Dark Side of the Force” or something similar? (And maybe even Rey’s next line to something like “And, we are the Light,” etc.)

Just throwing stuff out here. I always felt like those lines were tacky (not to mention too similar to Endgame).

(Also, this is my first post on OT, so I’m hoping I’m doing this right.)

Welcome to the forums!

I agree that those lines are some of the worst in the film. If we’re throwing around complete replacement ideas, maybe something like:

“I am all you can ever hope to be!”

“I…I can be more.”

Something that is vague yet speaks to Rey’s core character arc, whether you interpret it to be one of self-worth, belonging, destiny with the Dark Side, whatever.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Welcome!

The real problem is the lip synchronization. There’s honestly not a whole lot you can do with those lines since we can clearly see their faces.

Characters with masks are much easier to replace dialogue for.

Author

Well, you can overlay the lipsync you want and then deepfake over it. Cinefy has also been doing some good lip puppetry so anything is possible along those lines. The toughest part is getting Rey’s actual lines.

So if the end of the film is extended so the musical cue can finish more naturally, what if we see the Falcon go to Hyperspace above Tatooine, and the backdrop for that new effect is the same shot of Tatooine from the very beginning of A New Hope and we circle out from there for the end credits?

Edit: Plus it would help that the Falcon does not jump to Hyperspace while still in Tatooine’s atmosphere.

Edit 2: We already have the proper clip from @Poppa so only one new shot would need to be made with Falcon effects.

I really like flying into the suns, so I’ll be skeptical but very much open.

I’d have groaned audibly in the theater if it literally ended on a screengrab of ANH.

This would just be a one-word cut, but I wonder if Palpatine could just say, “I am the Sith!” and you could hide the cut with lightning flashes. Basically, getting across the same sense of entitlement and ego Palpatine has as his “I am the Senate” line does.

And in response, Rey could still say, “I am all the Jedi.”

This might be more appropriate for the whole “more of us” theme TROS has going, and Rey being alone vs having family and mentors she can depend on, whereas all Palpatine has is himself. Basically, no one person is strong enough to take on when everyone works together.

I don’t really care for the lines at all, but I feel like this reading makes more sense when you look at it from that selfishness vs selflessness perspective, which is an important theme for Star Wars.

Random thing I wanted to bring up: in Rey’s conversation with Finn, she claims that she saw herself and Kylo on the throne. This is completely false according to what we saw earlier in the film. Yes, the new vision we have shows Kylo, but he is clearly not on the throne with her. So instead of saying “And me” she should be saying “Just me”.

This also ties in with the idea that we really should be making it so that Kylo has no interest in the Sith throne. In TLJ he clearly wants to create something new with Rey, and we should stick with that for better continuity. Instead, he should just be after commandeering the fleet. So at the very least we should remove the backend of the following line: “We’ll kill him, and take the throne.”

With those two simple modifications Kylo becomes more of an anti-hero, like Sherlock said. He clearly is just playing along with Palpatine, and wants nothing to do with him besides his fleet because of all the uprisings around the galaxy.

Author
Time

Ah well. I just figured since we were modifying obscure/inconsequential lines such as “I never lied to you” and “She’s not on Jakku, she’s gone” for better continuity with TLJ that we might consider it for one of the main characters as well.

It wouldn’t take much to undo Kylo’s character regression, but I suppose I could discuss it more over there.

Apologies if it’s already been talked to death, but what’s your personal take on the Rey-Sheev-one-liner exchange, Hal? I know you left it unaltered for V1, and changing it for V2 might be straying too far from the project’s aims, but I mean, like, your opinion of it in the theatrical cut.

You mean “all the Sith/Jedi”?

I think by that point in the theater my throat hurt from laughing. I remember really finding it so silly when Palpatine reacted to a second lightsaber being held up, as though to go from 100% confidence to, “Oh, shit, TWO lightsabers kill me.” I’m pretty sure, because we’d been riffing through the whole thing, I leaned over to my brother and said in an Emperor voice, “Oh, no, not TWO lightsabers.”

The “all the Sith” line itself didn’t feel out of place given that the movie alluded to spirit transfer and consciousness merging. I was wondering if that meant Palpatine was Darth Bane in a sense.

The “all the Jedi” line just felt like the obvious response. It was predictable, and didn’t really pack a punch. I was wondering how the Jedi were speaking given ROTS establishing that Yoda felt Qui-Gon had discovered this for the first time.

I also felt the victory moment fell totally flat, saying, “There’s no WAY you can tell me that he’s dead for good this time. NOTHING is different, and certainly not more decisive, than how he died in ROTJ.” It’d be like an episode of Doctor Who making a series-ending-before-hiatus climax about the Master dying; forgetabbowddit!

Jonh’s version of the scene is sublime. It annexes new meaning by having those four specific ghosts show up while the others remain voices, to almost let the ROTS thing make sense. And that closeup of hands being lifted beautifully removes the silliness of having a second saber appear to turn the tide. AND, it now makes sense that Palpatine would be plausibly dead for good, due to the dead themselves tackling him to make sure he makes it to the wood chipper this time.

Pretty much exactly my own take on it too. I’d completely checked out of the movie long before that point in the theatre, and my wife and I were both snickering and rushing to make the same joke about Disney owning Avengers Endgame so they’re safe from being sued.

If the line can possibly be dubbed or deepfaked to something different, I’ll do it in a theoretical personal edit. (I’ve already changed it in the novelisation edit, but that change wouldn’t work in the film version.)

Jonh’s Force Ghosts turn the whole scene into something entirely different. I never expected to feel genuinely emotional at that scene, but when I saw his version, I did.

What’s your version of that moment, in your rewrite?

Genuinely curious about this as well. I kept it the same in my rewrite because I couldn’t think of anything else that made much sense.

EDIT: Maybe just “I’m a Jedi” instead of all of them. But then the whole “1000 generations live in you now” doesn’t necessarily relate to the line.

I was playing around with tweaking the exchange a little bit for my version. So instead of “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me. I am ALL THE SITH!!” “And I…am all the Jedi.” I’d like it to go, “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me.” “And I…am [a] Jedi.” Suddenly it goes from a stupid game of one-upmanship (“I’m more powerful!” “No, I’m more powerful!”) to something that culminates Rey’s arc - both in terms of this movie (“rising” to become a Jedi, like Luke before her, rather than falling to the Dark Side as has been her fear), and also her arc across the trilogy, going from a poor scavenger to a powerful Jedi.

I mean, I guess you could argue that she’s accepting her responsibility of “a thousand generations live in [her] now”; but that seems less important to me than what she’s personally been struggling with this whole time. “I am all the Jedi” is the culmination of her arc of…trying one time to “hear the voices of the Jedi who came before,” and then suddenly being able to do it when the plot requires. Powerful stuff.

I’m just not sure how badly removing the word “all” will throw off the lip sync.

EDIT: Maybe I’ll mock something up tonight, if anyone is interested.

How about we change Luke’s line to, “A thousand generations will always be with you, but this is your fight…”?
