Regardless of if 3PO gets redubbed, I think it’d be worth to consider removing the “horrible things” line (which some find asinine as she’s holding Anakin’s saber with her other hand) as well as removing momma rey’s scream both times she picks it, taking advantage of these moments to introduce and shift the focus to the concept of Rey hearing whispers emanating from the dagger instead.

I agree with this totally … she literally says that while holding the Youngling Slayer 9000. 😂

Also removing the shouting and focusing on the whispering helps focus the concept of the dagger guiding, not just a memory thingy.

The problem is that Shaw looks nothing like Christensen (and Lloyd looks like neither though children do change a lot). McGregor and Guinness actually look alike (they go into it in the special features) which makes the transition much easier (even if the ageing is weird). Like I said, it’s not a massive problem in the unmasking scene (once the features continuity is fixed), but as a ghost, he is completely unrecognisable as Anakin in face, style, posture, or voice.

Though, as Hal has indicated he is using the Christensen version in RoS:A and I’d got the wrong end of the stick, I’m just contributing to the gargantuan mass of this thread.

As I thought about the possibility we could see Anakin in TROS before it’s release, I hoped they would at least let Hayden appear somewhat older than he did in ROTS. No long hair, but not necessarily elderly either. Just to break from “I am literally exactly how I was right before turning evil.” It probably would’ve looked too silly, but I’d have even liked to have him made up to resemble Shaw, maybe just his hair even.

It’d have to be all done digitally because neither Christensen or McGregor have aged significantly since 2005. So just sticking his face into an ager probably wouldn’t do much 😄 .

Once we can get Jon H’s new sequence with Sebastian Shaw, Leia’s purple lightsaber, Anakin’s crackly blade and the color correction all in one, the Force ghost sequence will be absolutely perfect to me.

By new sequence, I meant the version he just released with Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, Ahsoka and Leia.

Holy shit, I was literally talking to my friend yesterday about how I’d love to eventually see a version with Qui-Gon and Ahsoka added and then it dropped the same day! Hah. Incredible work Jon, would love to include this version in my edit if you release it.

I saw a comment on the YouTube video saying that Qui-Gon, Ahsoka, and Windu, shouldn’t be there, but in my eyes (as a hard stickler for canon) Qui-Gon and Ahsoka are fine, Windu is just the odd one out. Qui-Gon canonically was able to appear physically to Kenobi by the time of ANH (as per the From a Certain Point of View book for that film) and since every Jedi after Kenobi had become a Force ghost also became one, it’s safe to say that Ahsoka would, the only question is if she’s dead or not by the time of TROS (and Dave Filoni has implied/joked that she isn’t :S). And as for Windu, there’s almost no chance he could have become one, but the Story Group could always bend over backward and make it happen if they wanted.

Edit: and if we’re getting really specific then Leia hasn’t physically faded into the Force yet, but it doesn’t really matter since she’s at least dead at this point in the film lol.

But yeah, great work on the clip! 😃 Wasn’t expecting this at all, what a nice surprise.

I mentioned this in a comment above, but if we go with the explanation that “Only Jedi who were taught by Qui-Gon while they were still alive can return as ghosts,” then we have to exclude Anakin from that group as well. If Anakin can learn after he’s died, the other Jedi should be able to too. So I say, the more, the merrier!

I didn’t realize Filoni had already implied that Ahsoka is still alive - that might throw a huge wrench with the upcoming Ahsoka show. jonh - if there’s any way to have the expanded version with the extra Jedi, but a variation without Ahsoka, that would just be incredible!! (And with the purple/crackly lightsaber effects, of course!)

Yeah I think we’ve never gotten an answer on that, and the general idea is just that Qui-Gon, Kenobi, and Yoda were able to do it for him for some reason (which I’m totally fine with FWIW). Regarding cutting Ahsoka out then, I’d add Windu to the list too lol

That many Jedi just makes it too comically busy, like I’d literally laugh if I saw that in the theater (as I did at many other things in TROS that this edit has tried to downplay). Qui-Gon died over a decade before the Emperor revealed himself and Windu doesn’t really have an emotional connection with the audience besides prequel nostalgia. Obi, Yoda, Luke, and Anakin are the ones that matter, and the only ones movie-watchers have already seen as ghosts.

I agree generally with Neerbs comment however I think adding Leia to this is important and also a really nice transition from her death scene. Sure she isn’t a Jedi master because she derailed her training due to her premonitions about her son but she is a pretty Force-y character. She was Rey’s mentor for training and including her in the array brings the Jedi part of the relationship full circle.

I’d be interested in having Leia be in there only if we could find a nice place to move Leia’s body vanishing. I’m willing to give her the word “Always” in the Jedi voices scene, but a full on ghost wouldn’t work without her body being gone at the time.

And on the topic of “well Anakins body didn’t vanish”, I’ll say that in the edit I have of ROTJ he does. Also, just because it doesn’t happen on screen doesn’t mean it never happened.

May I ask what edit of ROTJ you have that has that?

I took it as the moment it cuts away from Luke crying to Death Star II action is when Anakin fades away. And Luke is only burning the empty suit in the end. But you still have to fade away before you become a ghost.

Yes, it’s Return of the Jedi Remastered by Darthrush. My only problem with it is that it has the Shaw ghost, but I just need to get around to editing the special edition change in.

It removes a lot of the film, but that’s fine by me because I don’t really like ROTJ besides the Luke/Vader stuff.

Qui Gon’s didn’t, he was cremated on an open-face flame, and he supposedly discovered the ghost power. They play pretty fast an loose with this stuff.

I think Leia appearing as a ghost in the Palpatine fight would hurt the payoff on Tatooine where Rey sees Leia, without adding enough to the Palpatine fight to compensate. Rey hearing Leia’s “always,” which Hal has already incorporated from the trailer, is satisfying enough without being distracting.

Maybe it’s just me, but when the ghosts appear against Palpatine, I see it as a kind of catharsis where these Jedi that have spent decades against The Sith are finally getting their due; Sidious is literally facing his ghosts. For Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Luke, that works and is satisfying enough, but for Leia? I’ve never had the impression from the movies that Leia and Palpatine had any real connection. Of course she was one of the major political and military opponents against the Empire as a whole, but she never had a big Jedi vs Sith connection, or a connection with Vader the way Luke did. Of course TROS finally introduces some more Jedi stuff for Leia, but in a fairly limited way, and if anything it felt more like the focus for Leia was on supporting Rey and saving Ben than battling Palpatine.

Although, in this version of things, she could still have Ben be something new to see on Tatooine.

My intuition about the whole ghost thing, ignoring anything other than the nine films in a vacuum is this:

Force sensitive people die and become one with the Force the same as anyone else, and this isn’t viewed as a bad thing. Ashes to ashes. Then, Yoda hears from Qui-Gon from beyond the grave. Evidently he happened upon some secret to preserving his consciousness in a way that still lets him meld with the Force. He’s not clinging to life unnaturally, it’s just… I don’t know, it’s serene or something. Anyway, he discovered this and it probably was an ancient thing he rediscovered. (This is an unknown ability up to this point at least as far as modern Jedi are concerned.) Qui-Gon teaches this ability to Yoda and Obi-Wan, and they are able to take it further by physically vanishing upon death and manifesting visually. This surprises Vader when it happens. When Anakin dies, Yoda and Obi-Wan (and perhaps Qui-Gon) help him to merge with the Force in the way they did. Anakin appears to Luke restored and fulfilled. Luke learns this ability as well, passing it to Leia and Ben Solo. Yoda gets really good at this, and hardly appears blur at all. He can hit people with his ghost cane, too.

Then, Rey gets the idea from what I can only imagine is the Jedi equivalent of the Bible that one can learn to hear the voices of dead Jedi. This doesn’t make apparent sense, given that when experiencing exactly this Yoda concluded Qui-again discovered immortality. But I imagine there must be some difference between the sort of vocal presence in TROS and true immortality.

Ugh, what a mess. The Jedi should just have had this ability consistently. But I still feel better maintaining separation between voices and visual appearances, as though up to that point the phantom four are perhaps the only four Jedi ghosts in existence.

My stance on revising fan edits.

My feeling on the ghost thing is that people can try to explain the exact “procedure” for ghost apparitions however they want; but the canon is full of contradictions in that regard, so I don’t really care about the logistics. Bodies vanish except when they don’t. People have to be taught the technique before they die unless they appear later anyway (Anakin, in both regards). The details don’t matter.

So in that regard, I was leaning more for the large group myself (helping to tie all of the saga together), but I think Neerb may have actually convinced me otherwise:

Well said, friend. (Of course, Mace fought Palpatine too, but I can ignore that.)

But regardless of what I want, Hal has made his preference for the Ghostly Quartet clear by this point.

In the regular cut, the voices are fine because The World Between Worlds has already been established but any pre-OT Jedi coming back as physical ghosts doesn’t fit with what we’ve seen (excluding Qui-Gon and possibly Ahsoka).

The four that we get are the main reflections of Palps, Yoda is his direct mirror, Obi-Wan is his opposite teacher of Anakin, Luke is his main OT drive in his desire to stamp out the Jedi, and Anakin is obvious.

Qui-Gon probably wouldn’t be able to pick Palps out of a line up of politicians, Ahsoka’s never had much to do with Palps beyond not particularly liking him, and Leia wasn’t his main political rival in the OT (that was Mon Mothma) and Leia may be Force sensitive but she made the deliberate decision to continue as a General and Politician rather than a Jedi so it doesn’t fit her arc.
