I’ve added playing around with that Mustafar shot to my to-do list, but it’s likely I’ll be preoccupied for the near future. Got some real-life things I need to prioritize for right now.

I feel like we should wait for a v2 release until that LEGO The Skywalker Saga game comes out anyways (Q2 of this year). I have a feeling that there will be some unused voice lines from TROS in there.

Alright, wanted to whip this up earlier but have been busy. Here’s my slight tweaks to the “pre-dawn Ahch-to” sequence. Keep in mind this is a very quick and dirty pass purely to have a visual reference for my thoughts here.

  • Basically, to my eye the correction seems about 90% of the way there. The big sticking point for me is the dark grey look of the sky and the frame in general. Dark grey sky reads to me as either overcast or, unfortunately, artificially darkened - not dawn or pre-dawn. To me, before a sunrise, sky and the ambient light tends to be primarily blue (check the final scene of the film as an example). Especially in a movie that trends towards blue in its coloring, it feels very off to me that we’re not really seeing that here. So I wanted to show what things might look like if you introduced that hue.
  • I think as well we’re giving the TIE fire too much credit for the ambient light in the first couple scenes, so I wanted to try to tone that down, and try to restrict it a bit (so, when Rey is sitting down talking to Luke, we mainly see it on the left side of her face, not the right where it wouldn’t reach).

Again this is very very rough (yes the masking is slapdash. is it too blue? too dark? maybe!). I’ve only done the first couple scenes here to give an idea.

Personally, I don’t really have the time to do this work, as it’s very tricky to do all these masks on top of all these other masks that Nev did (you’ll notice the final shot in that clip is particularly tricky and I did a very quick and rough job of it). If someone else here thinks it’s a good idea it’s all yours. I do think if Nev was interested these changes might be easier implemented on his end (or if somehow he was willing to share project files or plugins containing the exact effects and parameters - presuming we’re on the same program). But of course no harm no foul if this doesn’t tickle the fancy, it’s just my two cents (and I’m sure Nev’s time is just as full as anyone else’s).

I think the first part of the scene with Rey and the TIE looks really good, and wouldn’t bat an eye if that was in the final edit (I assume you have the final .mov renders I made but if not I can PM you). The second part is very blue, but I do like the more directional fire effect. The original masking I did on some of those shots was quite rough from the beginning, but like you said I don’t feel that I have the time to spend days finessing the scene. I think the first part works great, the second though needs a more subtle blue to work.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I imagine the blue-ness of Luke is a limiting factor. One of the nice things about Nev’s grading is it takes that down a peg.

I’m getting a small business off the ground and so there will be times where I may not be all that active for a while. BUT, things are obviously still in motion and it will all come together. The Rey Nobody version is not pushed back by the default version taking a while, as development of that aspect is in the Rey Nobody thread.

I agree. The first scene was very easy to accomplish and I think it gets the point across well. The second scene is tricky on a number of levels (mostly how it was shot, also the masks you applied, etc.). But yeah the idea is that the sky is more on the blue side, providing a subtle blue hue (moreso than I did it for sure) to whatever light that’s being cast not from the fire. I might take another crack at it at some point but I don’t know. If anyone else wants to, feel free.

To me a harsh blue hue is usually what gives away day for night instead, compare it to the night scenes in TLJ, the hue there is pretty much grey rather than blue.

Well, blue is used in day for night for a reason. The TLJ scenes do in fact have a very distinct blue hue, not as strong as in my mock up, but still there. Not to mention, again, that TROS trends bluer in general.

Yeah, there’s still a hint of blue, but very desaturated, it’s why I said “pretty much grey”. I guess I’ll just say I personally prefer nev’s approach, which personally does read to me as the first lights of an early morning, at least from the second establishing shot onwards. Though perhaps the TIE torching bit could use a slight hint of blue.

Does anyone have a 4k version of the ahch-to clip? I just need the bit with Luke walking away from the burning tie fighter.

Nev, Great job!

Dom, I like the more blue version but it’s a little too saturated, imo.

I may be able to get a 1080p version in the next few days, I’ll share if it comes through…

Is there an ETA on the crackling saber? I’ve just been chilling on starting my edit until that’s ready

Honestly, when it comes to fan editing, there is never a reliable ETA on anything.

Absolutely true! Non of my artists are able to finish the scenes we’ve been working on and I’ve kinda hit a patch of Anhedonia this week. 😐

Hang in there, MR. Take all the time you need.

Regarding the “Leia sensed the death/birth of her son” line, if we can’t find a usable source for the word “birth,” could we just cut it to “Leia sensed her son at the end of her Jedi path”? We’d still get a double meaning kind of thing - Leia originally takes it to mean “I have a son now, so I can’t continue training as a Jedi”; but the true meaning would be that, when Leia dies and becomes one with the Force, her son will be there waiting for her (hence why they vanish together). I’m open to other suggestions though.

I never understood as to why “the slight electrical crackle as Palpatine reveals his hands” was removed?

Author

Originally for the Rey Nobody version, as it reads to me as put there in order to connect to Rey’s use of lightning in order to imply a connection. But I figured it wasn’t necessary and the Fx was done so why not include it for both versions.

It never actually appears in the novelization, either.

It’s better to draw more attention to his disfigured fingers than the fact that when he’s using the Force for anything lightning starts shooting out even though he didn’t mean it to.
