Hey, man… the Book of Henry was awful, but DotF was still better than TRoS.

I haven’t seen either of them, but I’m inclined to judge things on their own merits, not by association. Some creative people can create both brilliant and terrible works (or, to put it in terms of general opinion, well- and poorly-received ones). Tom Hooper made both Les Misérables and Cats. Largely the same team made the first season of Game of Thrones as the last. For that matter, both George Lucas and J.J. Abrams made Star Wars movies that were generally loved and generally panned.

Exactly. I have enjoyed most movies by Alfonso Cuarón, but one particular movie of his did nothing for me, Children of Men. Does that mean I should invalidate his entire filmography because of that one movie I didn’t like? Hell, no.

Let’s just say Treverrow said stuff that made me doubt his competence with the franchise.

From a Slashfilm interview in 2018:

“It’s a foundational myth. It’s a noble ghost story. Where a character lives on after death in order to guide a hero to find their strength and defeat ultimate evil. And structurally, I can’t…but you’re gonna print this, unfortunately. I’m saying this now. But the way that I look at movies, I do see Avatar and Titanic and Jurassic World [as] very similar movies. Henry was Obi-Wan Kenobi. And he died in the middle. And he left a set of instructions on how to take out the Death Star where Darth Vader was holding a Princess captive. And at the very end, when he had the target in his sights, he had to remember his training. Guided by this ghostly voice. And then Han Solo comes in with the Rube Goldberg machine and gives him the moment. And ultimately the Princess saves herself.”

Sounds more like he’s a moron who’s bad at interviews and trying to sound profound than someone who has a catastrophic misunderstanding of Star Wars.

Oh good lord. No wonder he got fired. On another note having read DOTF I think it’s pretty weak. Not a big fan of the force ghosts, especially Luke, having so much action. It’s very apparent Trevorrow wasn’t happy with Luke being killed off.

Use the Force, Joh Yowza.

I made a cover for a potential Duel of the Fates book

I might get it printed in the future. What do you think?

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Yeah, I thought about it, but it just complicates the design for the Author flap. Derek Connely is still attributed in the interior itself.

I also based the specific green color off your trailer and included a QR code in the book to your trsiler! (I hope thats okay)

I think the Resistance attacking the capitol would’ve aged poorly after the Capitol Riots on January 6th here in the US.

Nah, that would’ve been hilarious.

Well, those people call themselves rebels but are exactly the kind of sad, reactionary edgelords that the First Order (and Kylo in particular) represent in episodes VII and VIII. The irony would have been delicious.

I just wish Trevorrow incorporated the Sun Crusher into his script. Either that or the Galaxy Gun. 😉

I updated my cover once I found the SFX art regarding DOTF and other unfinished Star Wars projects.

Which do you like better?

I personally prefer the first design. Using a concept sketch seems more appropriate than a mock-up poster for a script book, and I’m not a huge fan of the rip-off of Luke’s ROTJ costume they put Rey in. Where did you find the poster though?

Tough one. I like them both. I think I may prefer the second, because the first requires you to see both sides of the cover to appreciate the art properly.

“Remember, the Force will be with you. Always.”

Alright, finished poster for the not movie.

Cracking poster and also both the choices for a book cover too, dgraham414.

My personal preference was for the top book cover image - though both are great 👍

Oh what could have been! It is only DOTF concept art, and nearly all of the concept art for Star Wars looks amazing, but these videos really highlight the art and possible DOTF story and potential:

Star Wars: Colin Trevorrow Reacts to Fan Reception of Scrapped Duel of the Fates Script at Comicbook.com

“Honestly, if any director tells you that they don’t care what the audience thinks, or even people who watch movies and write about them for a living, then I’m not sure if they’re being fully honest with themselves,” Trevorrow told The Hollywood Reporter. “I do make these movies for audiences, but I also make them for people who think about film all the time and watch movies the way that I do. So yeah, absolutely. Any time you do something that’s received well, it’s going to encourage you and hopefully assure you that not only was there a reason why you started doing this in the first place, but your imposter syndrome is only partially real and you’re not a complete fraud. (Laughs.) And I think we all have those moments.”
and

“It was complicated. But, honestly, I mean, since we’re talking now in 2022, I can say honestly I’m very grateful to [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] for recognizing that she and I were never going to make a movie that we were both proud of together,” Trevorrow said. “And she’s been doing this for so long and she cares about me and I care about her and her family. And [producer] Frank [Marshall] and I are partners still. I’m a part of this group of incredible filmmakers, so it was a complicated moment, but now, having been able to do this and really feeling like this is what … I’m glad I did this. I’m deeply, deeply satisfied for having done this. I appreciate that she had the wisdom to see something that, honestly, I’m not sure I could’ve seen because I was so dialed in to the story I wanted to tell.”

Respect to the Colin Trevorrow for saying that “It was complicated. But, honestly, I mean, since we’re talking now in 2022, I can say honestly I’m very grateful to [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] for recognizing that she and I were never going to make a movie that we were both proud of together”.

It is disconcerting the amount of times there have been massive changes to Star Wars content over the past 7-8 years being planned or delivered by writer or director: Rogue One, Solo, TROS, Kenobi, Rangers Of The New Republic, the GOT guys canceled project, and Rogue Squadron being pushed back, are just the releases I can think of right now.

Though maybe this also happens in most other big franchises, like Trek, Aliens, Terminator, or MCU and so on?

The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

It’s so weird that I liked ‘Duel of the Fates’ as much as I did because Trevorrow has absolutely sucked at making Jurassic Park films. For better or worse, I would have preferred to see his take over another Abrams film. Ultimately though, there was a lot in that original script that worked and should have been carried forward. The worst part of TROS is the script, and it’s unusual to not only think there were better choices to make, but to KNOW earlier versions had some good ideas that were dropped in favour of less interesting ones.
