I’m just running through my first cut of the season 2 edit, and the one thing that keeps nagging me is a desire to put the Tattooine episode into this fanedit. I just feel that seeing how Fennic and Boba came together is important. Not necessarily for the Mandalorian, but for the Book of Boba Fett which seems like it will run alongside the Mandalorian.

I suppose there are four ways of doing this.

  1. Cut the village scenes completely and when Mando says “looks like this planet is taken” transition wipe to the Razorcrest in space. This would keep the current 2.5 hour run time.
  2. Keep the village scenes but cut the walker battle, giving a 2.75 hour runtime.
  3. Keep all the village scenes and have a 3 hour runtime.
  4. Produce two 2-hour movies for season 1 by including the initial Nevarro trip and Jawas and ending episode 1 as Mando escapes Nevarro with the child.

What are people’s thoughts?

I just finished watching your season 1 cut, and have got to say it’s nearly flawless. Thank you so much for your hard work! It will be my go to file to rewatch season 1 from now on. The work you did on episode two and the “random encounter” with the Mudhorn is really great, especially.

However, some minor nitpicks that I know you thought of while making the cut:
If I was the one editing, I’d have left Grogu eating the frog after the AT-ST attack in the village. It’s a great running gag, that I think leads into Greef’s line “He’s trying to eat me!” you’ve also omitted. Not that it’s comedy gold, but it’s a fun aside that I like to watch and builds on Grogu’s character.
The main thing I’d have done differently though, is to have cut Mando’s flashback in the last episode, and instead I would’ve cut to the stormtroopers shooting the shit with Grogu after killing Kuil. I think it’s a nice break from Moff Gideon’s siege, and with some minor cuts (like leaving out them shooting the can) it doesn’t add much screentime compared to the flashback, which I think is absolutely non essential and just filler.

Nonetheless, that’s just my opinion on what I would have done - everything is absolutely mesmerizing how it’s cut together in your edit. Love that dogfight from episode 5 sprinkled between 4 and 7!

Great work. Looking forward to watching your season 2 edit!

About your post quoted above, I wouldn’t mess with your edit just to add Tattooine. I don’t think meeting Fennec this early has any impact whatsoever in her scenes in season 2, nor how she and Bobba meet moving forward. But if you really would like to move forward with this, I think option 1 is the best, if not even cutting episode 4 altogether and just introducing Cara Dune in 7 after the wrestle in the cantina. We don’t really need to know her previous to that - but I do think the film will seem less structured and more stitched together that way.

Anyway, those are just my two cents!

I REALLY strongly feel that the Tattooine episode should be included. Of course, I also really strongly feel that the Jawa/egg stuff should as well. It is a side quest, but so was the village episode. The point of keeping that was because we got to know Cara more and it showed why Mando trusted her, plus showed Mando considering taking off the helmet. Well, I felt that the Jawa episode did much of the same character-wise. We got to know Kuill more, and it showed why Mando trusted him, plus it showed Grogu’s skills.

I really think that a few of the scenes from that episode are really important to establish Kuill more.

As for the Tattooine episode. YES, YES, YES!

I suppose there are four ways of doing this.

  1. Cut the village scenes completely and when Mando says “looks like this planet is taken” transition wipe to the Razorcrest in space. This would keep the current 2.5 hour run time.

I still think the Nevarro trip should be included sorta, but I really think it just needs a trimmed down version of only the first scene with Karga, and then cut to Mando in space. That way Mando (and his awesome skill-set), the mission, the fob and Karga are all introduced boom in one quick scene. And when Karga shows up in the transmission we know exactly who he is from that first scene.

And, of course, I’d still throw in the Moff’s alive scene after Mando flies off with Baby Yoda, right before he puts the grave together for Kuiil. I think it would fit beautifully there. I just think it would flow together nicely. The OOH! of the fly-off, to the jittery ooh! of the Jawas transition, and then the dun-dun-dun of the Gideon reveal which is a oh no! to the downer reminder of Kuill’s death. I think that has a good flow.

I say keep the village, but drastically cut it down. As much as I loved your edit, I did feel that the village stuff slowed the movie down (i also thought that episode was the weakest of season one). Frankly, you don’t need all of the pretty village lady stuff since nothing comes of it.* All of the reaction shots with her, all of the close moments with her, all of the attention/focus on her, cut almost all of that. There is enough with her and Grogu you can keep (like when we first meet her–that convo should be kept) that him nearly taking off his mask makes sense that it’s about Grogu, the lifestyle. And the convo with Cara and Mando easily can cut out her query about the “pretty villager lady” when the two are talking about his mask.

*For instance, Mando/Cara ask who has experience with guns. Focus on pretty villager lady raising her hand. Focus on her showing off during training. And then… during the battle, a bunch of the villagers are shooting guns. So, yeah, ALL of that could have been cut. Again, cut the PVL focus and you cut some nice precious seconds that add up to some nice precious minutes!

Oh, and, yes, cut down the walker fight big time. When I was watching it, I figured that a bunch of when Cara/Mando go off to distract the bad guys could be cut as well.

By doing that, running time-wise, you can cut a good chunk. Maybe.

If you cut all the PVL stuff, cut the walker battle stuff down, add that one opening Nevarro scene, some of the Tattooine stuff (and pretty, pretty please–the Jawa/egg/Kuill stuff), I see it easily fitting under 2.75/3 hours, I don’t see how that length would be a problem.

And, yes, I completely understand that I’m just totally hoping you’ll do this so that I don’t have to make my own edit! 😄 (The only thing I’d add other than this is putting Mayfield in, but, eh, I could live without him.)

I, of course, could be COMPLETELY wrong about the timing. If I am, and just going by your four choices above: I’d go with 4 personally. But, damn, that would be a lot more work for you. My second choice would be 1.

Then you can just leave the series as it is and continue to watch all the episodes. 😉

Unfortunately adding all that in would equate to more than an extra half hour. The only way to produce a movie of the first season is to cut a lot back and unfortunately that means omitting some cool stuff, like the Jawas, that ultimately don’t advance the plot.

Currently updating this to replace the Sanctuary story with the Gunslinger, so that it fits better with Episode 2.

One thing that a lot of people wanted was for the Darksaber scene to be put back in, which I have now done. Its been moved forwards to keep the upbeat ending of Mando and Grogu leaving Nevarro on their journey. Had to to some rescoring to make it work.

YES! I love the addition of the Darksaber scene. It works exactly as I thought it would included that way. WOOHOO!!! Can’t wait to see the other changes. 😄

Hi smudger,

Two questions:

In Mando Season 2 they have post credits scene of Boba going to Jabba’s Hut do you plan to have that scene in movie and not in post credits.

Also, were you planning using the Force theme when Luke arrives to save the day?

  1. No. It doesn’t really form part of the season 2 story and if you add it in, it completely disrupts the flow of the ending.

  2. No. It makes a cool clip but the music feels out of place when viewed as part of a movie. Also, it would be extremely difficult to do it properly. I would need to rebuild a lot of the audio to remove the original music…… in that clip you can clearly hear the original music bleeding through in several parts.

Is V1 of this edit going out of print, and being replaced with V2 like the SEs (officially) replaced the OT?

With Episode 2 now being completed, I have gone back to episode 1 to tidy up the storyline issues created by Episode 2.
This mainly involves replacing the Sanctuary scenes with the Gunslinger.
I have also made a few other minor alterations.

The completed version 2 should be released next month.

Hi,

I just watched your EP1 cut and must say that I’m impressed. First of all thank you so much for all the effort.

I really don’t understand the hype about this series since its first season left me yawning on my sofa. Somehow I managed to watch it all, waiting for the plot twist, some development, some change - but there was nothing. So when the second season was aired I was again hoping for more fun watching (I’m a fan, what can I do?) but I gave up after 3 episodes. It was the same guy with no expression (helmet) and a cute green alien with hardly any expression (baby, cgi) fly to some planet, get into trouble (make promises, bad guys show up, monsters), get out of it or flee, repeat. Really disappointing, when you think of the character’s potential.

In your EP1 you managed to streamline and pace the plot, get rid of redundancies, cringe and all the explanatory stuff (Come on Disney, this is made for star wars fans, we follow the force, we know. Stop explaining star wars to us). And I can’t thank you enough for it, it is so much better now. This is the way (repeat 10 times).

But as i mentioned before - I am a fan - since the day I saw episode IV in a cinema that didn’t care about my real age back in 1977. I need to know what’s happening. So, if possible PM me with a link to EP2. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

So an update on V2 of Ep1.
I’ve had the Gunslinger scenes edited together for a while, but have been going back and forth on how to fit them into the overall movie.

There were 2 points on which I was struggling. Firstly whether Mando meets Cara Dune before he goes to Tatooine, or just meets up with her after Tatooine. I’ve finally settled on just the one meeting but have slightly extended the scene by cutting in parts of the Sanctuary.
Here is the scene… the audio isn’t finalised yet.

https://vimeo.com/640738207

The second debate is exactly where to insert the space battle preceding Tatooine. I have 2 options.

  1. It occurs as Mando leaves Nevarro. In this scenario Mando escapes by entering hyperspace rarer than blowing up the bounty hunter’s ship, the Razor is then forced to exit hyperspace due to the damage sustained in the battle.

https://vimeo.com/640697741
(audio needs a lot of work)

  1. Mando escapes Nevarro and is attacked just after he exits hyperspace.

https://vimeo.com/640697944
(audio needs lots of work and “that’s my line” needs editing out.

Let me know your thoughts.

Both clips work well, I would probably favour the second on the grounds that the scenario is a little more straight forward, however both have their merits. Look forward to the final, updated edit
