Hey all!! Excited to be a part of the community and thanks for the opportunity to join!

TL;DR Long time fan (since seeing A New Hope in theaters when I was 3 back in 1977), avid collector and slowly getting together my armor to be able to join the 501st!

As someone who has passionately followed the ebb and flow of Star Wars since I was a kid, I have always been a fan in every since of the word. I still have most of my toys and collectibles from when I was young, and though my passion for Star Wars (and sci-fi) did not translate into my career (though I did make it to a final round of interviews at ILM back in 1998), that desire to stargaze and imagine what life beyond our planet would be like has always been there.

Some basic thoughts about Star Wars as a whole:

  • Han shot first.
  • I miss some of the canon from the novels and comic books.
  • The prequels and most recent trilogy missed the mark in some sense and nailed it in others.
  • Clone Wars is some of the best Star Wars writing and character development – ever.
  • The Mandalorian is pretty amazing
  • Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is still on the bucket list (darn COVID)
  • I love that I have been able to share my passion for Star Wars with my own kids as they have started to grow up over the past decade

I look forward to interacting with folks on the forum and getting plugged into the Discord servers as well!

Talk soon, and MTFBWY!!

Hi everyone,
Just another long-time SW fan, I started pretty early given that the only TV I was able to watch when I was younger was Sesame Street and Star Wars. I guess that was always going to colour my tastes. I was so happy when I stumbled across a site dedicated to preserving the classic versions (or at least the idea of them) of not only Star Wars but also many other of my favourite media properties.

Thanks to everyone for their hard work in keeping the dream alive 😃

Atrak.

Hello everyone (Waves). Have been browsing here for a few years now on and off and reading about the preservation projects. I thought it was finally time to join and be part of the discussion!

I’m 40 years old, which of course means I was born the same year The Empire Strikes Back was released. My older brother was obsessed with the films and saw each of them on their original theatrical release however I discovered them on VHS from recordings my brother made for me from TV broadcasts one Christmas in the early to mid 80’s.

He got me obsessive about them as well as showing me a lot of other sci-fi/fantasy stuff (and horror as I got older) and instilled a love of practical special effects in me that I’m still passionate about today.

I’ll always love the original movies because of their immense imagination and world building as well as the iconic heroes and villains. All those background details and interesting character cameos, everything felt so cohesive, a real “Lived in” universe.

My stance on other SW stuff:
I’m not a big fan of the so-called “Special Editions”. Seeing the films at the cinema for the first time was a great experience but even though I was only 17 at the time I was very critical of most of the additions except some of the digital enhancement to the backgrounds/ships. God that Jabba scene in ANH and the musical number in ROTJ make me cringe…and how is the replacement song at the end of Jedi better than the iconic “Yub Nub” celebration song?

I never really warmed to the prequels (Perhaps I’ll give em another chance at some point. It’s been years since I saw any of em) enjoyed TFA and TLJ but unfortunately TROS spoiled the trilogy for me with its disregard for what came before and not even trying to tie many of the loose ends up in any meaningful way despite being the final “skywalker saga” film. The Mandalorian on the other hand is a dream come true for me. I always wanted to see more of bounty hunters and see the scummier side of the Star Wars universe and I really dig the action/adventure samurai western vibe the show has. Awesome, it really feels like old-school Star Wars to me.

A little more about me outside of Star Wars. I’ve mentioned my love for films in general, well I love foreign cinema particularly Japanese cinema (Some of you might have guessed from my username). I’m also big into comics particularly manga and I write a blog about old school Anime and Manga called Animehead’s Retroworld.

I also love robots and combining two passions: robots and anime I co-host a podcast called Retro Mecha Podcast in which my buddy Ian and I talk about Mecha Anime from the 1960’s to the turn of the century.

TLDR: I love old school Star Wars, movies in general, comics, Japanese culture and I like big bots (and I cannot lie).

Thanks to ALL members of the forum whose tireless preservation efforts have allowed me to watch the original films as I remember them.

Thanks Gonk. Feels good to be on board, glad my story resonates with you. Looking forward to chatting with you and others on here. For a long time after the prequels I gave up on the franchise pretty much but since the new trilogy started there’s always been something pulling me back to the point where I had to admit to myself I was a fan again. Having said that though that all ended in disappointment: the less said about how TROS turned out the better!

At least I really enjoyed Rogue One, Solo and The Mandalorian.

I felt like for quite a while after the prequels my relationship with the franchise was quite complex. I loved it and hated it at the same time for what it had turned into since Phantom Menace. It says a lot that watching that documentary from a few years back “The People Versus George Lucas” kind of felt a bit like being in therapy 😃

Hi everyone! I’m glad to have found this place.

I’m an OT fan from childhood, as I’m guessing most people here are. I saw the original release of episode 4 in the movie theatre when I was about 6 years old, and it’s safe to say that experience shaped the direction of the rest of my life. I work in film and TV, most recently doing post production though I’ve touched on a number of different jobs over the years.

What brought me here apart from the obvious is some experimentation I’ve been doing recently with frame rate conversion, attempting to generate high quality intermediate frames to bring 24 FPS footage up to 48, 72 or more. I’m finding that tests I’m trying with DVD footage isn’t giving me the best picture to start from, so I’m in search of better clips. The 4K77 project sounds like it may be of an archival quality that would fit the bill, so I’m hoping to discuss further with members of that team.

That said, I don’t want to just be some guy asking for footage and then taking off. It seems like there are a lot of really experienced post artists on here and I’d love to connect with them to get a better understanding of their archiving work and hopefully contribute what I can as well. If this interests anyone, please contact me.

Thanks so much.

Hey everybody!

I’ve been here at OT for a few months now, but I guess it’s finally time to introduce myself. Everyone online calls me Nexol, and I’m tempted to see what truth be told I was brought here by the same thing that I’m sure drew a lot of others here as well: Harmy’s Despecialized Editions. I sought out these fan preservations because the scholar in me wanted to be able to appreciate something as close to the original theatrical releases of the films as possible. However, in the months that have passed, I’ve silently browsed around and found that there’s so much more to the website than simply being a dedicated forum: it’s a home for Star Wars fans from all walks of life.

Being a 90’s kid, I grew up watching both the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy as part of my childhood. My brother and I have a love and appreciation for the prequels, both because and despite the rather controversial elements (I loved Jar Jar when I was a kid and I still do, no matter how obnoxious he may be for some). I remember seeing both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in theaters with my family, and it was amazing seeing what I would later come to know as a Shakespearean tragedy unfold before my eyes.

That being said, while I had seen the original trilogy when I was younger, my family only owned it on VHS, so by the time out VCR stopped working around 2007-2009, it was a long time before I was able to actually sit down and watch the original trilogy again (don’t ask me why, but my parents never went out and bought the OT again). So, for the majority of my young adulthood, Star Wars (for me, anyway) was the prequel trilogy. They were the only ones that I could sit down and watch with my family at any given time, so I was able to come to a long-term understanding of the tragedy that plagues the character of Anakin Skywalker. I know I’m not all that special in this regard, but I figured it would be best to give my exposition dump of a backstory here of all places.

Hi, I’m Akira. I found out about this place a long time ago due to Harmy and his wonderfull preservations. Since then I’ve been lurking every now and then and am excited about the 4K77, 4K80 and 4K88 preservations. I have been a fan of Star Wars since I was kid. My Dad introduced me to them in the 90s though at the time I only loved the scenes with the Droids 😆 What can I say I was a kid. BTW my Mom is an OG Trekkie and my Dad is an OG Star Wars fan, so I guess you can say I’m a filthy Mudblood. I like both Star Wars and Star Trek and think it’s silly to compare the two or to just pick one side.

Growing up I didn’t know there was changes in Star Wars until a few years before the Laser Disc version came out on DVD. After seeing those I was blown away at how much better the story was and how things played out practically. From then on I only liked the Unaltered OTs and let me tell you it was hard being a teenage nerd in the 2000s and not liking the Special Editions as well as not liking the Prequils.

Right now I am currently keeping tabs on the Sheepish version of the Prequils and aside from his high contrast fetish I think he’s doing a good job.

Thank You for making this place, without it we would never see the original Star Wars as it was meant to be seen.

Hi everyone and thanks for letting me join your group. It’s funny because I don’t mind star wars at all but that’s not actually why I’m here. I am a tv show collector and have been for the last 25 years, and like everyone on here the constant changes to them when they have been released has pushed me to restore episodes myself. Shows like Dawson’s Creek, Felicity and a few others. I respect and admire everyone’s projects they are working on, I know how long and how much effort is put into each one. Hoping I can contribute and possibly have some help in return, so that everyone can benefit together. Thanks, See you shortly in the restoration projects section.

Hey OT community, new member here. Big fan of movies, and storytelling in general, and I salute the passion, dedication and creativity of the editors and broader community, helping to evolve our contemporary stories. Found my way into the world of fanediting looking for digestible versions of The Hobbit (so far, have seen the Maple Films version, and sethlinson’s Bread and Butter Edit, both very good…parts I love, parts I would tweak, of course, if had the skills!), and looking forward to getting stuck in to some other classics, Star Wars, Matrix to name but a few! Will be exploring the OT site, please feel free to get in touch with thread recommendations and projects to keep an eye on. Cheers!

Hey everybody. Stumbled upon this site and have been amazed at some of the projects being work on and discussed here.

Being born in the early 70’s, Star Wars has always been a part of my life. The movies, toys, playtime as a kid. Updated movies, books and new stories as a young adult. And now, stumbling upon groups working on projects to take us back to the original versions. Amazing.

I am in awe of the work that I have read about so far and I am excited to see it soon.

Hello everyone! I’ve actually lurked these forums for years now but finally decided to bite the bullet and sign up and engage.

I’ve loved Star Wars longer than I can remember. I’m somewhat of a universalist as a fan, in that I love all three Trilogies. I also enjoy Star Trek, Tolkien, anime, metal music, cinema as a whole.

I hope to get along here and look forward to getting to know everyone.

Hello,

I’m Eyepainter, and my journey is a simple one. I was first introduced to this place thanks to Harmy’s Despecialized Editions. Eventually, I discovered the power of fan edits when I got to see the l8wrtr versions of the Star Wars prequels. Since then, I’ve watched the HAL9000 fan edits, as well as the infamous phantom edits, and I’ve become a sucker for fan edits. So much so, that I’m now trying out my own fan editing. Yes. I decided to try out my own versions of the Star Wars prequels. I’m very much a noob to the world of editing (plus I have no idea how to edit sound as of this posting), but I’m getting the hang of it. I just found out how to add deleted scenes to my fan edit of Episode I last night, which has left me giddy as a schoolgirl.

I intend to write up a post in the forum about my fan edit of Episode I soon, although my sister needs a trip to the library, so it might take an hour or so before I get to that.

I hope to enjoy my time here in these forums. See you around, and may the force be with you.

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.

Hello, I’m Joe. I’m not much into fan-editing but more in seeing them because I like collecting versions of one film. My favorite film series is Godzilla and I’m more into Trek than Wars. Pretty much because I remember when I first saw the OT when the '95 vhs came out but I don’t know how I first saw Trek like what was my life like before seeing it.

I got into this by Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited and was blown away by what one person can do.

Hello everyone!

Like many here, I arrived because of my interest in the different “descpeicalized” fan-edits of the Original Trilogy.

This seems like a worthwhile forum though, I may stick around beyond that and see what sort of Star Wars related conversations are happening around here. Looking forward to meeting some of you guys!

Hello all!

I have a love of the original trilogy as when I was a kid I walked the living room while my dad was watching A New Hope and fell in love with the film. It was one of the first experiences that my dad and I truly loved together. Of course he got into things I was into as a young kid, but this was the first time I truly felt I was sharing the experience with him.

I was still pretty young when the prequel trilogy came around and I actually didn’t mind them when I saw them. I could kinda tell Dad wasn’t as into them though 😉. That enjoyment of the prequel trilogy faded over time and I kinda stopped watching and engaging with Star Wars for quite some time. I remember purchasing the blu ray’s early in college and I actually wasn’t aware of all the changes… but they felt off. It had been long enough since I viewed the originals I didn’t even realize the changes where the culprit!

Then The Force Awakens was announced. I wasn’t too excited at first, but each trailer left me more optimistic than the last. By the time it was in theaters, I had a child-like level of excitement entering the theater. Unlike a lot of Star Wars fans, I was not let down. I genuinely love the movie (and still do). I understand the criticism for echoing A New Hope’s trajectory, but it didn’t bug me in the slightest (and honestly might be why I fell so hard for it). I spent a lot of time defending the film to friends stating the movie kinda needed to play it safe and that the sequel was the “sequel trilogy’s” time to shine. Unfortunately, I hated The Last Jedi. It definitely didn’t play it safe, so credit where credit is due. But I just didn’t think it did a single character justice with a worthwhile arc and the middle of the movie is a complete drag. I know a lot of people actually like The Last Jedi a fair bit and I don’t have any intention to undermine their love for the film.

Anyways, with how much I enjoyed TFA… I stumbled into fan edits while looking into opinions on The Last Jedi. I watched a couple. I didn’t realize how much power an editor has as people made versions of the film that I found fairly watchable in comparison and, magically, they didn’t feel gutted. From here I stumbled into Hal9000’s Custom Special Edition of A New Hope and my love for Star Wars migrated back to the original trilogy (I know many creators had ideas and moments that made it into this cut so I thank everyone here for that!).

Realizing how much more I enjoy the original trilogy than the sequel trilogy, I decided to use some of this wonderful work and try to make a personal cut of the films (planning to put it together in a blu ray collection for my dad this year). I’ve stuck around the forums and read for quite awhile but I just recently started engaging and I hope to continue to do so on a regular basis.

I have learned that my love of fiction and entertainment has resulted in my sometimes veering me in an overtly critical viewpoint when it comes to engaging with my favorite intellectual properties. This is not a slight at the creators of the content… They are the ones that created something engaging enough for me to care in the first place. It just happens 😃. In the past it has led to me really relishing in any way I can engage with material itself in an effort feel some part of ownership of the material and I find a lot of joy in that. In the past, it has been modding games as I’m a software developer by trade. I am grateful to this community as well as that on sites such as fanedit.org that I have found such a cool way to engage with movies.
