^ The ‘George Lucas: A Life’ by Brian Jay Jones?

Not yet mate, though I have heard it’s an insightful and well-constructed read. I am waiting to see what Santa brings this year… 😃

I hope to get my hands on ‘Skywalking: The Life And Films Of George Lucas’ by Dale Pollock, too.

Hopefully both may provide some more info - or insight - for this thread…

Hopefully this OT•com signpost thread will help highlight and chronicle just some of George Lucas’ many contradictions and his continual revisionism of Star Wars history - especially in regards to the ideas and planning stages for the Original Trilogy films.

Astounding treatise and should be required reading at the beginning of every Star Wars movie. Bravo, even though I’m still reading.

Yes indeed the Jones book. I’ve gotten to the post Prequels section and it’s the most balanced book on George I’ve read.

^ Nice one, thanks. Please let me know if there is anything of interest that could be included here 😃

A new category has been added to opening post; Category No. 39 - ‘George Lucas Quotes on Film Preservation. Pt 2.

The Film Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1990 by director Martin Scorcese dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history - of which George Lucas is a board member.

The quotes below are taken from a video of George Lucas talking about the Film-Foundation - and the importance of preserving movies. Click on the Film-Foundation link above and then on the George Lucas image icon to watch the actual video.

George Lucas - “The idea of film history, the idea of preserving films, which are so important to our heritage and culture, and which are part of what I think are a very significant art form, especially going into the future, I think is paramount. The reality that we face which is half the films before 1950 have been lost and we’ll never see them again… is a tragedy. And it saddens me every time I think about the fact that I’ve seen stills, I’ve heard stories about certain movies and I’ll never, ever be able to see them. Because they’re gone now. And I think preserving films - in terms of the legacy for the future - is probably the most important thing we can do.”

I can’t remember specifics off the top of my head that aren’t already covered here but the Jones bio is great for getting everything laid out in a historical context. The biggest draw I’d say is probably detailing the notion of giving up control is perhaps something hard for George to do and this caused issues in the sequels while he tried to distance himself from stress. I think it’s a great book and something everyone on here should read at least for better understanding because it isn’t afraid to address the negatives.

Now with the chapter in Bob Iger’s new book detailing how George felt betrayed on Disney not using his treatments it doesn’t surprise me a bit that he felt left out.

George’s need to be the centre of attention seems to be at the forefront in most of this. I find it fascinating that he didn’t give Disney any stipulation to use his material, but now claims he’s been betrayed. He married a lawyer a couple of years back right? You’re telling me he cared at the time but didn’t want to at least make them start pre-production using these alleged story treatments? Did he really write anything or is something weirder going on?

A new category has been added to the main post:-

12 • ‘The Importance of Tone Toys In Film-making…’

It doesn’t contain anything new or revelationary - though I thought the subject was worth covering and having its own category.

Interesting that they spelled Wookiee right. Kenner wasn’t the largest toy company at the time, (that was probably Mattel) and their biggest success before 1977 was The Six Million Dollar Man line, but Star Wars is what really raised their profile.
The quote about sequels and letting other directors interpret Star Wars in their own way is fascinating in today’s context.

And funny how THX 1138 is described as non-cultish, which isn’t the case now. 😉

So I randomly thought about this interview between George and Leonard Maltin. It was on the last VHS release of the OOT (I always fast forwarded it as a kid). Interestingly George seems kinda relaxed here, and not awkward and bitter. Maybe because this is before hate towards him because of the Special Editions and the prequels. The flannel shirts are also absent…

It’s pretty brief and was originally split over 3 tapes. However some tid-bits for this thread:
He says he first wrote his own space opera, inspired by Flash Gordon. Did he ever write his own version though?
Still claims SW is the “first act” of a much larger script. Also mentions the alleged “back story” about Anakin’s wife.
Says he’s writing all 3 prequels at once, but then during pre-production of one of them (maybe EpII?) he sees all the designers at work and says something like “I better start on this script”…
Claims the twins reveal and the redemption of Vader was always part of the back-story.

i watched a great video on youtube a while back that went onto great detail about Lucas’s original 9 to 12 part plan for Star Wars. it pulled from the old Bantha Tracks, interviews from Lucas himself, and others in the know. It talked about Luke’s Sister (not Leia) getting her own trilogy. episodes 7, 8, & 9. And then her and Luke would team up for the last trilogy to fight the emperor. Anyway, I searched every thing I could think of to find that video with no luck. Does anyone know what I’m talking about or where I can find it?

Thanks.

So, Criterion Channel is going to carry THX 1138 next month; I’m hoping a company with the integrity of Criterion won’t participate in Lucas’ revisionism and will show the theatrical cut. But I doubt it.

I don’t think so, it’s a Warner Bros release.

I doubt it, if he could forget he wouldn’t worry about making so many changes. Even back in the 90s this stuff was probably bugging him. Now he’s more bean counting machine than man.

I was reading the making of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Lucas said he believed directors deserved to get final cut on their films. As i was reading that it reminded me that Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand did not get that on their Star Wars films. Since 1997 you have not been able to see the films they directed. Lucas pretty much made himself the director in the Special Editions by changing scenes.

It’s a thorny issue to be sure. Kershner didn’t disparage the SE, but Marquand sadly passed away in 1987 and certainly couldn’t give his blessing one way or the other.

All of this clear evidence that Lucas has been retconning things since ESB has turned me into even more of an SW77 purist than I already was!

My new headcanon is:
-Star Wars 1977
-The original marvel comics (up until they adapted ESB in 1980)
-Splinter of the Mind’s Eye
-The animated segment of the holiday special
-Droids (why not?)
-The Han books (again, why not?)
…And I guess that’s it!
