That looks a cool set 😃

These site smay be of interest mate - they convert inches to pixels for you (many covers seem to have a DPI of 300):-

A few people on here have bought old 3-disc boxsets from the local thrift/charity store (it doesn’t even have to have any discs in them etc) - and use that to take apart and learn how these box sets are made - as well as measuring dimensions etc. Some prefer 7mm slimline cases, or the 12mm spine cases - so sizes may vary depending upon preference.

Good luck with it!

Hey toastedzen,

This How To Make Your Own Custom Box might be of interest to you, but it’s only half-way completed.

What I personally have done is to use the Blu-ray cases themselves, all put together as in your picture, to trace my sizes onto the cardboard before I cut.

  1. Then I made sure to trace the top/bottom first. Then cut the pieces.

  2. Then I rubber banded the top and bottom pieces and included them in the tracing for the spine so it would be flush with them. Then cut that piece.

  3. Then I rubber banded all three pieces for the final trace for the front and back sides so they would be flush with the top/bottom and spine.

Here’s a crude MS Paint Sketch to try to make that a little clearer:

It looks like you are using the same size cases I did, so here also are the measurements of what mine ended up being. But I can’t promise those will fit, so probably best to use them just as approximate numbers until you can check them against your actual cases.

Top/Bottom

5 5/16" (137mm)
by
1 7/16" (37mm)

Spine

7" (177mm)
by
1 7/16" (37mm)

Front/Back

7" (177mm)
by
5 7/16" (139mm)

As far as the art goes I found this video guide very helpful, except the part about using large mailing labels. I’m pretty sure the adhesive will breakdown faster than you’d want it to. So instead I will be using rubber cement and glossy flyer paper that is inkjet compatible.

Best of luck!

Yes, that is the very same way I have made mine. I believe the article I read is the same that video came from! It’s just the final art work / labels which have become the biggest issue. Using just glossy white label paper works for now (the site I purchased from didn’t have gloss black) but it’s not my end goal.

How does one print out the covers in just the right size for the DVD cases? I’m going to be burning Q2’s edit of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows soon, as well as scaperat’s Batman Forever: Red Book Edition, so I want to make sure I’m doing this right.

For anyone in USA and Canada in need of getting more DVD, Blu-ray disc, and 4K UHD cases, http://goodwoodeshop.com/ is a great website. Same site has many other types of cases in stock too, especially CD ones.
