Those look great! I’m not a table top gamer, but I love miniature things and model building. I bought a pile of Bandai Star Wars models recently when BigBadToyStore had a really good sale on them.

The Bandai models are really fun. I’ve built the TFA Falcon and the snowspeeder, but I never painted them - I only started doing Dungeons & Dragons miniatures last fall. Now that I know what I’m doing, though, I’m thinking about finally taking a crack at it.

Yeah, I built the 6 inch Stormtrooper a while back and really enjoyed it. I got the 1/72 Y-wing, TIE Fighter, and TIE Striker, plus another 1/12 Stormtrooper. Can’t wait to built them. But I need to get an airbrush first. I painted the first stormtrooper completely by hand. I’m happy with how it turned out now, but brush-painting all that gloss white by hand was a real bear!

Pilots Wanted !

Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Interest piqued! I hope it’s more like X-wing and less like Rogue Squadron, but the title tells me the opposite is probably true. Regardless, I’m eagerly anticipating more info!

If this is “Project Maverick,” which was always described as being smaller in scale than Fallen Order or Battlefront, then I’m guessing it will just be an expanded version of the Starfighter Assault section of Battlefront II, with an all-flight campaign and probably more ships. Which I’m fine with; I actually like the ship combat in BFII a lot. I just hope the price isn’t out of control if it is indeed the case that this is more of an expansion than an original game.

Speaking of starfighters, this weekend I tried out the new solitaire rules for the X-Wing tabletop game:
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2020/5/29/flying-solo-1/

I ran the intro scenario in the rules supplement with two generic X-wings against three waves of generic TIE fighters and interceptors, then I ran my main squad of Leia in the Falcon, Luke in his X-wing, and a generic Z-95 Headhunter against Soontir Fel in an Interceptor, some character that I guess is from the Lost Stars novel in a Lambda shuttle, and two generic TIE fighters. It was fun and a lot more streamlined than the home brew solo play system I’d used before, but the AI isn’t very clever at this stage and the ships it was controlling often made “wrong” moves that no human player would make (obvious collisions mostly). These rules are only in alpha testing and I’ve already filled out the feedback form to let them know what issues I ran into; even though it’s clunky at this stage, I think it’s more fun than the more complicated systems out there and I’m looking forward to the next version.

Looks like they may have incorporated some version of the power management aspect from the X-wing game series, which is great! I always loved being able to shift power from shields to engines to laser cannons depending on my needs in the situation. It added a deeper level of realism to the whole “operating a high performance machine in space” aspect and is similar to the concept of energy management used when flying real aircraft (even though that’s managing potential vs kinetic energy, i.e. trading airspeed for altitude and vice versa).

Can’t wait to play this. I think I saw it’s retail at release is $40? Not too bad.

$40 is great, but I also saw something in one of these announcement articles about preorders coming with 10 hours of free play? If this is going to require a subscription to some EA service on top of PlayStation Plus, I think I’m going to have to pass (or at the very least wait until I’m out of grad school and working full-time again).

Huh, I didn’t see that. I wonder if that’s specific to a particular platform. Like maybe you can play online on PS4 free for 10 hours before you have to pay for a PlayStationPlus. I remember when I got the first battlefront on PS4 they had an offer like that. I got to play online for about a week without a subscription. It’s one reason I opted to get battlefront 2 on pc so I didn’t have to worry about a subscription to access all the features.

I’d be pretty annoyed if they added a subscription requirement to the pc version. As I understand, very few pc games require one to play online.

EA Access** and Origin™ Access Basic** subscribers can enjoy up to 10 hours of play time at launch, along with 10% off the purchase of the full game. Origin Access Premier** subscribers will get full access to Star Wars: Squadrons on PC along with all the benefits of Basic as long as they subscribe

That sucks. I’m gonna transfer this conversation to the thread specifically for Squadrons.

Doh! Sorry - I forgot to put in a post letting everyone know ‘Star Wars: Squadrons’ now has its own thread:-

‘Star Wars: Squadrons’ - video game

If we could keep any future discussions of the ‘Star Wars: Squadrons’ game in the above thread it’d be much appreciated - and helpful too.

Thank you all ❤️

'Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer coming to PS4, Switch next week:-

After a brief delay, you can strap yourself to twin boosters and zoom through deadly canyons soon on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

^ it’ll be out on June 23rd, and costs $15 apparently.

A little much for a 21 year old game with no multi-player, IMHO. Though it was quite a good play back in the day…

Time to dust off and fire up the N64 instead! 😃

Speaking of the old X-Wing series, does anyone know how to go about configuring a ps4 controller to play the games with on Steam? I know I ought to be playing with a joystick, and I’m sure I’ll pick one up eventually, but in the meantime I’d rather use the controller than a mouse. Steam recognizes the controller in the menus, but once I launch the game it stops working. Googling around, I found a pretty thorough guide for setting up an XBox controller, but I haven’t come across anything detailed for PlayStation. Any ideas?

I still have to pick up Battlefront 2 and Jedi Fallen Order and play them. Been so busy lately i just never got around to it. Don’t play games too much these days, i never even finished the remake of Final Fantasy 7.

You know I ever could finish the old X-wing games due to the extreme difficulty and trying to learn the controls. Back in the day as a kid we didn’t have a super high end pc and in years since they were a pain to try and get running. Now that they’re workable again I may try to finish all of them but must confess I’ll probably go back to Rogue Squadron.

It’d be nice if they could make a proper fun flight combat game again.

As for the Arcade1Up cab it’s amazing they got the atari controller pretty close to original. But if I’m going to put money into a replica I’d rather just build a muticade and buy an Atari controller to somehow hook up for those games.

I did just before COVID get to try out a sitdown original machine for the first time in years…and to be honest despite the immersion aspect and stereo sound vastly prefer the standup for playing. The screen is more clearly visible and you can get a better score on the standup. However the dark plastic enclosure and stereo sound of the sitdown really still block off the outside world until you release the seat isn’t quite comfy and you’ve had to get down in the the seat and will have to get back up out of it again.

I’ve only gotten to play ESB in person like once. You don’t see them around so I never get to practice outside of MAME. Sometimes you see the accursedly hard ROTJ machine though.

I could really use that new Star Wars LEGO game right about now.

My wife and I just finished Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear RotJ end with Ewok Celebration/Yub Nub rather than the SE’s Victory Celebration.

I wonder if TT had to fight for that or if Lucasfilm just didn’t notice.

The X-wing game was difficult but no way near as hard as tie fighter. That game was super hard.
Never had the chance to find an Empire Strikes Back arcade as they were not widely released like Star Wars was.

The Sega arcade was in every movie theater and gaming establishment so it was not hard to find.
Star Wars pinball also was not rare but episode I pinball was.
I once played Phantom Menace pinball and i didn’t like it nearly as much as the Star Wars one with the Artoo Detoo which they had at the bowling alley.

My first Star Wars video game was The Phantom Menace for PS1. Lots of great memories playing it and watching the Duel of the Fates music video over and over … and over.

I equally remember playing the arcade version of Podracer at Chuck E. Cheese. So much fun! Haha

I remember playing Battlefront, Battlefront 2, The Force Unleashed, Revenge of the Sith (GPA and PS2) and the Lego games too.

Earlier this year I bought The Complete Saga for 360 to mainly help me reconcile and seperate The Rise of Skywalker and Sequel Trilogy from George’s six films. Not only did that happen (well getting there) but I’ve found myself having a lot of fun playing it. It has child like innocence to it and I enjoy that comfort it brings me.

It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

I still occasionally play the 2015 Battlefront on PS4 in single player.

My card “hands” have been stuck in the last configuration I set up in multiplayer years ago when I did the free 7 day trial.

Is there any way to customize the hands of cards you’re equipped with in single player? It kinda sucks being stuck with the same stuff. And it’s not even the defaults. It’s the hands I last configured in multiplayer.

Google was not help.

The original X-Wing, TIE-Fighter and X-Wing: Alliance are some of my favourite Star Wars games. All three actually build a loose but cohesive story of the Galactic Civil War from a few years before the Battle of Yavin straight through to the Battle of Endor.

Even better, all of them have active modding communities and there are fantastic things coming our for all three.

I strongly recommend to anyone that likes the X-Wing series to check out the following links:

X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project
https://youtu.be/NtHGgAs33Iw

This has been an ongoing effort to improve the graphics of 1999’s XWA. Over the last year it seems that they have finally reverse-engineered the engine and have added new shaders, bloom, high-resolution backgrounds, TrackIR/VR support, in addition to the new high polygon 3D models and high-resolution textures. All now bumdled into a single installer “XWAUpgrade 2020 Patch.” From what I gather on the forums, they’re working to add multi-threading support to the engine, which will remove the biggest bottleneck in the engine (dependant on high-speed single CPU thread) and allow for smooth framerate during massive engagements.

TIE-Fighter Total Conversion
https://youtu.be/d8EbwANhJDQ

Built on the upgraded XWA engine using the XWAU project resources, requires the TIE-Fighter CE disk to play; they’ve completely rebuilt the campaign, rescored the dynamic soundtrack and redone the voice overs.

X-Wing Virtual Machine
https://youtu.be/IiOhc_DPQNY

Another “remaster” - this is a full port of the original X-Wing (94 CE) in the Unity engine. New 3d models, textures, graphics, they are remixing and cleaning up the sounds, voice over and soundtrack. Requires the original game to play as it will use of the original mission assets, including the expansion, for a full carrier mode.

Fate of the Galaxy
https://youtu.be/KNUgfPwoskk

Full Star Wars game based on the open-source FreeSpace2 engine, itself having been constantly upgraded and expanded since it became open in 2000. New original score, voice overs, full campaign mode with an original story, gorgeous graphics, multiple ships for both sides.

I understand XWVM and FotG are trying to not to gather too much attention prior to release after the Disney/EA issued the Cease&Desist to the KotOR remaster mod. All have been in development for years now and should be released or near release later this year or early 2022, XWAU is already complete and playable, and still being improved.

I plan to play all of them in a chronological order when released and I am really hyped. Hope this might give some smiles to those of you who have fond memories of the series but you haven’t played them in a while. They are all up to modern space sims graphics quality now.
