Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4k UHD -- 27 DISC Boxed Set -- 3/31/2020 — Page 16

I have noticed that any HDR to SDR conversion I’ve seen have a green tint to them (Any movie).
Here is the screenshots from the non-HDR 1080p blu-ray(included in 4K package).
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-Episode-V-The-Empire-Strikes-Back-4K-Blu-ray/257141/#Screenshots

Unless it’s just me. They still need a slight contrast boost. But not to crazy lol.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Just got the 4k box set delivered. My god is this release seriously f**ked up. Why the hell is the HDR so damn dark, especially when you compare it to the Blu-Ray? But that’s not the thing thats really pissing me off with this release. No, it’s the special features that they class as “legacy features”. Who the hell was given the task of compiling these? An idiot? For a start features like TPM’s " The Beginning" , instead of using the 16:9 anamorphic master, they present this as 4:3 letterbox. So a small bloody picture surrounded by huge black bars all around the TV screen . And its a jaggedy mess . The version on the original DVD is better quality. (view the pictures full size because you can’t really see the difference in the shrunk preview here).

(Pictures are taken on my phone direct from the TV)

The TPM deleted scenes seem to be 16:9 anamorphic ( only checked 2 so far)

I then checked the ROTJ bonus features. First one i checked was the "revenge " teaser. Correct ratio but still DVD quality. Then onto the Revenge release trailer. WTF? Morons at work once again. Some idiot forgot to encode this with the 16:9 flag, so now its presented in 4:3 with all its squashed glory

And that’s just the features i have checked so far

I was really hoping that these bonus features ported over from the old DVDs would be slightly better quality due to compression. I never expected them to be worse. Waste of bloody money. I only purchased the UHD box set for the features and EP 9, as i will never watch the prequels. I wish i’d gone with my original plan and cancelled the box set when i ordered months ago and waited for the individual episodes to be released on UHD over here.

EDIT: Just checked “Anatomy of a Dewback” & ROTS’s “Within a Minute” features and both are 4:3 , jaggedy mess letterbox, the same as “The Beginning” . But ROTS’s “The journey” is 16:9 anamorphic but still suffers with the interlacing jaggedy mess issues

EDIT #2: Ripped the TPM bonus disc to the hard drive to see if it was an issue with my Sony UHD Bluray player but, no, the problems lie within the way they have been encoded. Even deinterlacing/ pulldown removal, the jaggies are still present. One interesting thing i didn’t spot before though is that it has the complete Theatrical version of the Pod Race in 1080p. I don’t remember this being available before

Aaarghh… that’s terrible. I hope you can get a refund.

Either way it might be worth alerting Bill Hunt at the Digital Bits about this, and the members of the Blu-ray.com forum if you are a member there. Bill Hunt might be able to get a response from Disney.

I noticed this as well. The deleted scenes from the prequel DVDs are an inconsistent mess too. Some are 4x3 letterboxed & jagged, some are squashed, and some look fine.

I do wonder if that green tone is from the HDR to SDR conversion. These caps from the new HD bluray don’t seem to have the same tones on the stormtroopers.

I find that any HDR conversion screenshots hard to trust.

I was wondering this too, I took the screenshot from a HDR file. But I’m looking at the exact same shot on my HDR TV on Disney+ at the moment and it looks to me the same as what I posted. The Disney+ versions which are basically the same always looked a little warm/green, dark, and desaturated to me, for better or worse.

Can we discuss that statement? Recently I checked the release on LG UHD 49” led tv, and original trilogy (especially ESB and ROTJ) looked as dark as deep black hole, even in vivid HDR mode (other presets were even worst and darker). at the same time and same TV adywan’s esb revisited looked great and old blu-rays looked fine in terms of brightness. My PC monitor is HD, I checked UHD transfers on Media Player Classic and it looked ok, not dark. Is there something wrong with HDR on my TV?

Out of interest, how do the new Blu-rays included in the box-set fare on your TV?

Also, has anyone picked up the “Blu-ray only” set? Is the packaging of reasonable quality? I’ve heard the UHD packaging is a bit on the cheap/flimsy side, but hope the Blu-ray box is better.

I think the blu-ray only set is not just blu-ray only, but UK only? There were those wal-mart and Amazon UK links to it from when the Best Buy set first started making news, and that seems to be the only way to get a blu-ray only set of the '19 masters.

There hasn’t been a lot of (or any) discussion of it that I’ve been able to find anywhere.

A couple of unboxing type videos for the 18-disc blu ray box set of ‘The Skywalker Saga’ (they should give an indicator of the quality of the box itself, disc housing, contents, etc. In the UK they are £60-65 / $74-80 US):-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlU__hc70qw - at the Rick Adams youtube channel. (6 mins)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIOBud3h9MM - at the smerdp youtube channel. (10 mins)

blu-ray•com’s https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=324306 discussion thread on the 18-disc set.

blu-ray•com’s https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-The-Skywalker-Saga-Blu-ray/259251 info thread on the 18-disc set.

I have not found a review for the 9-disc DVD box set as yet. (in the UK they are around £40-45 / $50-55 US.):-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD-Cx6fjR_g - at the HecticTazmania TWD youtube channel. (5 mins)

^ The 9-disc DVD box is indeed somewhat different to the 18-disc blu ray box.

For those of us in the UK… Argos has the two ‘Skywalker Saga’ box sets - for £40 (DVD), and £60 (blu ray).

It is apparently available in the US too (these box sets are labeled as being ‘Region Free’ - but best check first):-

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Skywalker-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B082WXD4ZH - $149.99. It may be cheaper and also available elsewhere?

Edit: and here - https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B082WXD4ZH - through 3rd party sellers; the cheapest at $132 US.

Also… https://chipandco.com/star-wars-the-skywalker-saga-dvd-box-set-now-available-for-preorder-381212 - it refers to a pre-order at WalMart for $130 for the 18-disc blu ray box set (though the link to the set at Walmart is now broken).

The same here too - https://comicbook.com/gear/news/star-wars-the-skywalker-saga-box-set-is-now-available-on-blu-ray

^ so it appears there were plans for the 18-disc blu ray box set to be released in the US - but for some reason it has been delayed or shelved?

Reading the comments from those in England I was quite surprised. I pre-ordered in December and received mine in four days after it shipped.

I’ve been watching other new 4K HDR transfers of classic movies on Disney+ and almost all of them look infinitely better than the original trilogy. For a movie shot on film, it’s depressing how the 4K version of the original Santa Claus movie with Tim Allen has better use of HDR and left more grain in tact than these transfers of the original trilogy. A silly 90’s family comedy has a better transfer than these legendary movies??? What the heck?

Does anyone know if the 18 disc set is available in the US? I can’t seem to find it on Amazon.

Manos: Hands of Fate has a better transfer than Star Wars.

I think the overall problem is that if it’s a “classic” or “big seller” title, it gets extra attention. A new color grade a la The French Connection, re-inserting some deleted scenes like Cinema Paradiso, or moar Maclunkey like Star Wars. I suppose the logic is: why would anyone re-buy this title a fourth or fifth time if it wasn’t radically different from any version they’ve ever seen before? Which is just a corollary to: Why would anyone buy a movie they’d already seen?

But if you have a niche/meh catalog title, they just hand it off to the intern, who runs it through the scanner and puts the result on the disk. Thus, Shakes the Clown seems to get more respect than Amadeus, when in fact it’s the lack of respect that saved it.

I don’t think there is a US 18-disc blu-ray set. That link seems to go to a third-party seller that’s importing the UK set.

It looks like if you want a blu-ray only set, you have to get the UK one. But it’s apparently region-free so it shouldn’t be a problem.

You say that like it’s a bad thing? 😉

I had the Torgo screensaver on the family PC for a while back in the 90’s. My Dad had no idea what it was from nor why I thought it was hilarious.

My TV is an LG too. But other UHD HDR films i have don’t seem to suffer with being overly dark and dull like the Star Was films. Even on Disney+ the HDR on films other than SW seem fine. Netflix HDR is fine too

The Blu-Rays look great though. Colourful and not dark.

That’s great news regarding the Blu-rays, assuming the “Blu-ray only” set has exactly the same Blu-ray discs as the full UHD set.

Given the problems with the bonus discs, I might wait a bit longer to see if Disney fix them in the next few months.
