I thought The Mummy was great, but the sequel and Helsing should never have been made.

Captain Marvel = Good...

Directed by Sommers = Oh crud!

the new flash gordon has been in development hell since the late 90's as well as the new buck rogers movie. others film in development hell are Jack Kirby's the new gods, John Carter of Mars, and Star Blazers. Still there are plenty of good science fiction books/fantasy books that would make good films. Sure they finally made I robot but it was not faithful to the asimov novel, Imagine hollywood taking a cerebral story and making an action film out of it. Why could'nt they just Have shot the script that asimov put together with ralph macquarrie as conceptual designer?
X men 2 is the best comic book movie of all time, next to the first superman film. One of the most underated comic book movies is the crow based on the works of Jay o"barr. The studios are planning to make neil gaiman's sandman into a movie, and They still are talking about ender's game the science fiction novel by orson scott card. The Fantastic Four movie failed miserably why could'nt they just have followed kirby's original story? They were able to get the kirby and claremont stuff into the xmen movies. Hell there are literary classics being made into films, like beowulf and gilgamesh, and they still have'nt made a movie based on the odyssey for the big screen, troy and alexander sucked. i still would like to see the live action evangelion movie from Weta, and the rest of tolkien books made into a film the hobbit and the silmarillion. There going to make a series of narnia movies if the first one is sucessful, in fact since the new charlie in the chocolate factory was so sucessful they are doing a remake of the classic the wizard of oz. I would like for Terry Brooks shannara series made into films, or magic kindom series. Or even Robert Jordan's wheel of time, terry goodkind's sword of truth, or george r.r. martin's a song of fire and ice series. And what about the foundation trilogy by asimov?

I know it's wrong to feel this way, but I feel that The Mummy Returns was okay. Not great cinema at work but it was okay, a decent way to kill time.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

A remastered 4K release of Flash Gordon (1980) coming soon (in June/July 2020, apparently)…

‘Flash Gordon is returning to UK cinemas in May’ from FilmStories (back in early March) - obviously the cinema re-release won’t be happening given recent world events. But a 4K remaster release for the 40th anniversary as mentioned in the above article? Bring it on!

Really hoping this new 4K release has both director Mike Hodge’s and Brian Blessed’s respective commentaries from the 25th Anniversary / Silver Edition DVDs. And the new 4K remaster is going to get the love and attention it so deserves (if it is the same guys who did the recent John Carpenter set… then it should be!)

I love that movie. Has anyone ever made a fan edit with improved vfx that you know of? (Ducks for cover). Yes, I know that’s not inkeeping with the spirit of the forum but some tasteful improvements wouldn’t go amiss.

Unfortunately I don’t think there has been a fan edit for the 1980 version of Flash Gordon (here or elsewhere) - though I hope to be wrong on that.

Yet there are a few fan edits for other incarnations of the films knocking around online - mostly based on the 1930’s versions.

If this new 4K release of the 1980 film has any additional deleted scenes or other BTS footage included in it… they could help make for an intriguing Edit (though I love the film as it is - faults, cheese, ham, fun, pumping soundtrack and all 😃)

I’ll have to check the fanedit forum some time, maybe there will be something there.

I used to admire the costume design of the 1980 film a great deal, until I watched the documentary about Jodorowksy’s Dune (brilliant documentary by the way). Towards the end of the documentary there is a series of comparisons of original designs for the unrealised Dune project and the films that followed in its wake. It makes for rather depressing viewing.

That said, Ming’s palace guards (the ‘pig guards’ and ‘football players’) and the secret police costumes in particular are fantastic.

George Lucas developed Star Wars because he could not obtain the Flash Gordon rights. I wonder if his version would have been anything like as colourful, had he made it.

That’s a good question! Would he have kept it in a 1930’s/40’s milieu like the Filmation animated version did?

I guess we would need to find an interview where GL comments on the production design of the Flash Gordon serials or the ‘look’ of the comics. Lucas was/is a serious fan of comic art.

The Flash Gordon style clashes with the lived-in universe of Star Wars. I’m not sure a lived-in version of Flash would have been well received. Wisely the 1980 film is not at all realistic.

Strangely though, Lucas argued with cinematographer Gil Taylor over the use of diffusion in Star Wars. You can see it used in the Tatooine scenes but everything else is sharp. I can’t work out why Lucas wanted to use diffusion when the production design centred on realism. The prequel films all have a slightly diffused look. Maybe he was borrowing from Geoffrey Unsworth, the original choice for cinematographer on Star Wars. He was known for putting stockings on lenses - the best use of this being the opening sequence of 2001 where it looks spectacular.

This might be my favorite movie of all time. It’s the first movie I remember seeing on the big screen. It was amazing. I saw the 4K trailer on youtube yesterday and watched it like 10 times. I’m finally able to watch 4k stuff now, just got a new TV. This will be a day 1 purchase for me, definitely springing for that box set in August. The colors, the Queen music, Ming, the quotable dialog… everything in this movie is a gift!

I hope they get can that back on the road - even if it is next year… and also the plans the cinema showings of the film again too. Flash on the big screen?

I imported the 5-disc set from the UK and just finished watching the 4K version. It’s outstanding. Unlike many HDR presentations, I rarely felt like it went overboard in terms of contrast. Still mostly looked filmic.

I’d read the director opted to remove the wires from the Hawkmen, but I don’t think I would’ve noticed if I hadn’t read it beforehand. The cleanup work was seamless and I was too busy enjoying the movie. I’m not as much of a hardcore preservationist as some, so it doesn’t bother me, but I’m sure some people would’ve preferred everything been left intact. That said, it’s definitely a more reserved restoration in terms of the effects; I could still see the transparencies resulting from traditional optical effects, so no digital recompositing here. I could be wrong, but I think they might have redone some of the laser fire during the final battle on War Rocket Ajax. It seemed a little too bright and sharp for 70s effects. Maybe I’ll throw in my old Blu-ray to compare. Nothing else stuck out to me as being off though.

I will never tire of this movie.

Hi Jay, did you notice any problems with the soundtrack?

I’ve got the Zavvi 3 disc 4K steelbook, which is the Studio Canal UK edition of the remaster. I can only watch the blu-ray (no 4K gear yet) but the 5.1 DTS MA soundtrack on my disc is a mess. One of the AV forums here in the UK has picked up on this as well.

The Queen soundtrack is phasey and distorted, music was routed through the front right and centre speakers. I’ve asked Zavvi if they have heard about a recall yet (unlikely).

Update: Turns out the dialogue is meant to be routed through the front speakers and everything else through the rear ones. Re-setting the speaker mode on my receiver should fix the problem. The stereo soundtrack is fine. Perhaps the studio created a surround mix from the original stereo magnetic track using something like CEDAR Cambridge software.
