I’m glad we’re getting the wood grain back. But Atari games are still dirt cheap. I can get an original Atari and a couple dozen games for half the price of this new one. So, if that’s all it’s offering, I’m not too interested.

Apparently there are new games as well as classic ones; online leaderboards; online multiplayer; social media capabilites; Bluetooth controllers…

But yeah, if the price dropped by half, I’d consider it. JEDIT: I say “consider it”, but the truth is I don’t have a NES Classic or SNES Classic. I’d much rather have Virtual Console for Switch.

^ Hadn’t realised it was that expensive - like yourself, given the online content and new games I’d give it some thought if it were available around half that price.

Hopefully there’ll be some more info on the N64 Classic soon…

£64 seems a bit steep - may wait a little until it comes down in price. One for the core nostalgia buffs maybe?

The most important thing they should do with the PSX classic is get rid of or minimize load-screen time.

This seems weird to me considering every PlayStation console up to and including the PS3 could play original PlayStation games. The nostalgia just isn’t there for me.

Only the very early ps3s could do that.

But I don’t think it will be as successful as the Nintendo versions either. Just to name one thing, there are FREE programs for pc that will play a ps1 game straight off the disc, no ripping or downloading roms or whatever and totally legal.

Oh. Well my point still stands that your computer will to with a free abs pretty light program

Only the 20GB and 60GB PS3 could play PS2 games, but every PS3 plays original PlayStation games.

Actually, the first batch of 80GB models had software emulation for PS2 backwards compatiblity, but it didn’t work as well as the physical PS2 hardware in the 20GB and 60GB models. The later 80GB models (when they dropped the USB ports from 4 down to 2) and beyond dropped that, too.

But yes, all PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games.

I have to admit I’m having a lot of fun goofing around with an original Wii I picked up to play with. Since they’re dirt cheap and so easily moddable I figured I’d finally give it a go to at least have component out for GCN games.

I got an original model with component cable for under $20. This thing does remarkable NES/SNES emulation with little to no effort. Apparently there’s solid emulation on it for most every console save n64. Plus I finally got to try the abominable motion controlling Staff of Kings…yay…

Retro prices are skyrocketing. I saw a Smash Bros 64 cart in a local shop before the outbreak started and I kid you not the price was 73.99! No box, cart only! Admittedly that store is always a bit higher on game prices but it’s not much more than other game stores. Even common mass sellers are shooting up. Goldeneye and Super Mario 64 for over $50!

I’ve been toying with emulation as well recently - got RetroArch on my phone and my Plex server mini-PC (since that’s already connected to my living room TV). Been working through the original NES Final Fantasy and swapping the battery save file between my phone (while at work) and Plex PC (for home).

Unfortunately I don’t have a Wii and in the absence of being able to go to a local (non-chain) game store during the pandemic, they’re not as “dirt cheap” as most say from what I can find. A PlayStation Classic is about half the price of any Wii I can order at the moment, and from what I gather, once hacked, the PSClassic can handle emulation for everything I care to emulate up to the original PlayStation gen (not sure about N64 or Dreamcast emulation but I don’t care much about either console).

Once I’ve got it and have it hacked with RetroArch, I’ll try to remember to come back here and post about my experience with it.

Discussions of the Wii in the Retro Gaming thread? Blasphemy! (checks calendar and see the 2006 release date of it - doh!..)

It won’t be too long before a release of the Wii-Mini / Wii-Classic…

I like that the PS1 and C64 can… include more games than originally come with it to play [cough] 😉

But I really hope they do indeed bring out a N64 Mini…

Meanwhile, SuperBomberman on the SNES will be getting a good play over the weekend (or until I blame the controller for my lack of ability and forgetting how bad I actually was at the game back in the 90’s)

Well in to this lad - great arcade vibe and a fair bit cheaper than buying an expensive arcade machine / top / conversion…

An idea and a little inspiration (and no woodworking skills or tools necessary) - those old upright mobile / static monitor stands may still be of use yet… 😉

Awesome alternative, ooj 😃

Some of the arcade machines available to buy… wow, they look great but are very overpriced (depending on the quality of components used for the controls and stuff).

I can confirm that the PlayStation Classic is super easy to “hack” using a USB 2.0 flash drive to install the initial payload using controller port 2, then once that’s done, copying everything over to a proper USB drive (in my case a 2TB portable HDD) and plugging it in using an OTG cable. I’m using Project Eris.

It took a little bit of tinkering but I now have the complete NES, SNES, MSX2, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Atari 2600/5400/7800, Sega Game Gear, Nintendo GameBoy, Nintendo GameBoy Color, Nintendo GameBoy Advance, and PSX libraries on the drive and most of what I’ve tried works great! I’ve so far finished Final Fantasy I-III on the NES and will be starting up Final Fantasy IV in the next day or two.

As long as you aren’t trying to emulate N64, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, or newer, the PlayStation Classic is a very solid choice. (Though apparently a couple N64 games do work.)
