Well. I certainly wasn’t expecting that.

I didn’t hate Series 11, but I didn’t think it was particularly good. This was better than anything in S11, easily.

Anyone going to the theater screening of this and part 2? Got my ticket for Sunday!

Looking forward to seeing Part 2 😃

Pt 1 SPOILER

I was waiting for Stephen Fry to say something along the lines of ‘not now, Darling’ to his aide during the scene where he assumed Graham was The Doctor 😃

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

That was fantastic!! Great story and thorough writing. Jodie is much more on her game now and it shows in her portrayal, as well as the direction of the Doctor. I like that she’s more in control of the crew and their situation. She’s very much The Doctor. Loving her confidence. Also loving… Jodie in a tux. swoon

SPOILER #1

Loved the twist. Did not see that coming. Great way to introduce him too, having the Doctor realize she’d been fooled by him. Great job on The Master being as unstable as the Missy version, which was a tall order for sure. Ms Gomez may be the high water mark. Jodie’s acting in the plane scene was her finest yet. The subtleties and nuanced reactions - top notch and as realistic as I’ve seen from any of the Doctors in years. Particularly, her being nearly physically ill at the realization of who O really was. This scene was the best of the show; https://youtu.be/jg92hfbjyyA For me, maybe one of the best scenes in the last decade. Jodie is amazing. I really like the way she says “I don’t know” when he starts the reveal. She grammatically accents the beginning of the sentence in a way that reflects how she really has no idea what’s happening, but she’s weirdly calm and confused for a moment.

SPOILER #2

I thought Ms Gill was at the top of her game as well. Outstanding work, as well as realistic, having her be visibly and physically emotional at having been near death. Even more moving to have her upset for so long. She was deeply bothered and it showed. Outstanding work on Ms Gill’s part.

In the theater now, and it’s depressingly empty. I’m one of 4 people here…

Wow! You are so lucky to see this on the big screen, and without many people distracting you too! I hoped you enjoyed it.

I wish my cinema would show quality tv series like this.

It was neat, but they were clearly streaming it live. Some framerate stutters, and once or twice in Part 1 (they stitched both parts together with just a title card for Part 2, no recap or opening title sequence) the screen pixelated significantly. I also suspect they were streaming it in 720p, the image wasn’t particularly sharp. This was likely because they had a live Q&A with the cast (minus Graham) after the episodes.

I did the same thing for the Series 6 premiere (but for that one, they did it the day Part 1 premiered, so I had to wait 2 weeks to get new content, but hey, I saw Part 2 a week early!), but that definitely wasn’t live streamed, picture quality was crystal clear all the way through - and it was fucking packed. The show has definitely fallen off in popularity in the US since Smith/Moffat…

Honestly, seeing Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon for the first time in a theater packed with other Whovians who were all also seeing it for the first time was such an incredible experience. This sadly paled in comparison, but it was still cool.

Well…

Things have definitely taken an interesting turn. I’m still trying to process what I just watched.

I’m not sure where they’re going with this. Ruth almost has to be a pre-Hartnell Doctor. No doubt though, she’s a cool looking Doctor with her 1960s vibe. That also lends possibility to her being pre-Hartnell.

Nice touch when Ruth looks in the mirror at the beginning and says “Alright Monday, do your worst” - the shape of the mirror matches the TARDIS console.

Beyond that, this episode may be Jodie’s best yet. LOVED the deeper more introspective Doctor.
Man, Jodie is totally owning this now. They’re really letting her become the focus of the show without too much time spent on side stories of the companions. This was the perfect balance.

I don’t say that lightly either because if it were up to me, Mandip Gill would be the focus of every episode. * swoon *. Also, OMG, her accent… heaven.

Digging the return of Captain Jack. Great re-introduction. Great stuff with him thinking each of them is the Doctor for a bit. I suspect he’ll be back for at least one more. Can’t wait to see them meet again after all these years. This is also where you can see a change this year; the Doctor didn’t play it humorous or light when she finds out Captain Jack has returned. She realizes he’s back and trying to get word to her, but she stays in the seriousness of the story. Fantastic!

You mean other than all those dead people? 😉

My post on the Doctor Who board:

Enjoyed it and thought the TARDIS crew was well served and played. A question, a thought, and a speculation, if you’ll humor me.

Question; Who is Yazmin’s enigmatic and “a bit different” person? It could be either The Doctor or Ryan. Perhaps she’s developed a sort of crush on either. Could be interesting in the coming episodes.

Thought; Jodie may have had her best moment yet when speaking to Byron and shunning his advances. Loved her quick correction of “Just the Doctor” and when she says “Go for it”! She is in total command of the character now. LOVE her confidence and control. It’s both interesting and quite alluring. She was borderline seductive in that scene. swoon

Speculation; Ryan may not be with us much longer. He’s sort of being shown as someone who is at odds with The Doctor, as well as starting to doubt the importance of their journey. He’s questioned it earlier this year. Maybe there will be a sort of mutually agreeable parting between him and the Doctor.

I just hope Graham, Yaz, and Ryan are all done after this season. If they’re still around I’m probably sitting out until they are. They just suck all enthusiasm I have for the show away. Worst nuWho companions by far for me.

Maybe it’s just because of the excessive size of the TARDIS team (2 companions should be the max), I dunno. But they are all complete vacuums of charisma IMO.

Author

I think 3 companions is the max. They’ve just been mishandled. Moffat never had any problem balancing out Amy, Rory, and River. Also, Graham is a fantastic companion and don’t you dare say otherwise.

River wasn’t a permanent companion, though, she was a recurring guest companion. That’s an entirely different animal.

And I don’t understand why everyone likes Graham. He’s just so bland and boring.

So, uh, The Timeless Children has aired, and, er, what the fuck?

Part 1 sets up this nice Cybermen story and then the Master shows up and derails everything to exposit Chibnall’s teenage fanfic as a long and convoluted way of explaining the Morbius Doctors. Wow.

I don’t have major problems with the lore changes, though they’re not great, but that episode was literally just the Doctor being monologued at for an hour. Terrible.

I agree, it could have been a little less monologue-driven. I did like The Doctor getting physically angry with The Master. It could have used more of that and less companion side stories. Any one of the companions works really well with a good writer. That hasn’t been the case a few times and Sunday was one of them. The heart-to-heart between Graham and Yaz was excellent, but ultimately lost in the busy story. When I was watching, my thought just as the scene was ending was this phrase exactly; That was a missed opportunity. They rushed through it.

Regarding the story itself; It’s possible that Brendan is The Doctor. He may have hidden his regeneration energy in that carriage clock. The Doctor can use The Chameleon Arch to store the regeneration energy while living as a human for extended periods. The Doctor’s memory is temporarily replaced with a sort of pre-loaded memory. Ruth hid hers in a fire alarm earlier this year. In Human Nature, the 10th Doctor hid his in a pocket watch. When they shock Brendan to erase his memory, he has that carriage clock with him.

If I had to guess, The Division may be what the Time Lords called the gap of time where they blocked the history of Gallifrey. It could also be the name of the branch of their government that oversaw the blocking.
If The Doctor is the timeless child, it does seem like she’s immortal. I don’t have a problem with that at all. To me, that lessens the feel of the forced & poorly handled rewrite after 11 when they realized the show would go beyond 12 actors. That may have seemed like more than enough in the 1960s when it’s safe to assume they couldn’t have imagined the show would still be on the air and going even stronger 50 years later.

Having The Doctor be the source of all regeneration, including The Master, works really well into why he hates her so much. No matter what he ever accomplishes or creates – it’s all because of her. That might just push someone to the edge of sanity. Worth keeping in mind; The Master could have been lying. Brendan may be the Timeless Child.

Personally, I’m hoping it’s her. Not to get way nerdy, but in the episode from 1976, The Brain of Morbius, the 4th Doctor sees a lot of faces of his past that had been hidden from him. That part of the current season-ender isn’t really a change. They just decided to bring it back properly and make it a major part of the story.

They show the faces of Morbius in Jodie’s flashback as she’s breaking away from the matrix. At the very least, whatever becomes of this story line – which I really like – they’ve canonized the Faces of Morbius. Personally, I’m all for this for two reasons. One, it’s been hinted at before (1976) so it’s not a rewrite. Two; The Doctor should be more than just another time lord who happens to travel around. She should be special, bigger than imagination, one of a kind, and most of all, a mystery.

I don’t want to know everything about her. I like that she’s bigger than me and my world. For me, this expansion has returned the mystery to The Doctor. It’s the same as the way Rogue One returned the mystery to The Force.

Any mystery the concept of pre-Hartnell incarnations had is lost when you explain exactly where they came from.

Author
Time

They didn’t, though. The Doctor mysteriously showed up at a dimensional rift, nobody knows where they came from before that.

Author
Time

And don’t forget the 25th season and the Cartmel master plan that never got past two stories. The two 25 Anniversary stories both hinted that the Doctor was more than he seemed. It is possible that Doctor had some hint of his past at that point.

I really hate that this story line invovled the destruction of Gallifrey, but I like most of it. There are a lot of issues with the Ruth Doctor and fitting them in. She shouldn’t have a police box Tardis and she shouldn’t be going by The Doctor. That is at odds with the early seasons and the Tardis getting stuck only when it landed in I.M. Foreman’s scrapyard. But then, any Tardis landing in the UK might sense a blue Police Box would be a good disguise and his/her choice of name might have resurfaced. It might be one reason the Timelords were so scared of him running loose.

So other than the questionable things from the first episode of the season, I loved the finale as it tied back to other stories and expanded the lore and the mystery in one go. Sometimes the series has explained too many things and shaved off some of the mystery. This time they added a bunch and only made the mystery deeper and more intriguing.

I was listening on headphones, and was pretty sure I heard it. Of course they had to give the Master a way out.

I thought the idea of time lord cybermen was ingenious, and I loved their outfits. It’s a natural that they’d want to save them on some level for later use.

My only gripe about the last two episodes is the repeated speeches, by literally everyone, along the lines of: let’s not give up, we’ve got this, all right? Are we ready? let’s do this, etc etc. I don’t know if I’m being clear here, but it seems there’s some heavy overdone pep talk every 10 minutes. I’m finding those tiresome.

Pretty much this. No longer watching the show until Chibnall leaves.
