Palpatine’s motivations towards Rey change 3 times in the film.
-Wants Rey dead at the start of the film.

-tells Rey that he never wanted her dead and that he wants her to take the throne.

-Wants to drain her life force thus killing her…

Peace is a lie
There is only passion…

Really his motivations change once.

He is manipulating both Rey and Ben to see who will come out on top. I don’t think he cares if Rey is his biological grandchild. Whoever kills who, whether it be Ben or Rey, will make for a stronger vessel. Once Ben turns to the light, he focuses on Rey and tells her what she wants to hear, “I never wanted you dead.” That’s what he’s always done, lie and manipulate.

But once Ben and Rey are together, he realizes how strong they are together and decides to revitalize himself. I think he would have preferred a newer, healthier body, but healing his own body will suffice.

But that’s just my take.

Well he didn’t want her dead. Finn confirms this, with the info from D-O that Ochi was supposed to bring Rey to Exegol. I guess you could say that he wanted to raise her as his predecessor but when he lost her he switched to Ben.

At some point though you have to ask if he just supremely lucked out that Rey came back into the picture by herself?

Which goes to show Rey Nobody would’ve been a lot less coincidental!

I have yet to hear a compelling argument against preserving Rey Nobody. Least of all from the film’s writers!

Palpatine is evil and crazy. He wants people to submit to him or he wants them dead. If you are a pain he wants you dead. If he might be able to use you, then sure, he will take what he can get or he will kill you anyway. He spent two of the OT movies wanting Luke and then when Luke stood and declared himself a Jedi, Palpatine tried to kill him. So it makes perfect sense for the character to be inconsistent on wanting to kill or convert someone.

“Sheev” is Palpatine’s first name. That detail was one of Lucas’ last contributions to the lore, IIRC.

I just find weird that we call him palpatine at all. He is darth sidious.

It’s not wise to call him Darth Sidious on this forum.

Why? This site is called originaltrilogy.com, not prequelhaters.com, or sequelhaters.com. As for any forum, there will be those, that like the PT, and/or ST, and those that don’t, but let’s not even begin to push the idea, that some opinions on the films are more valid than others, or that we should censor ourselves to pacify some vocal hard line segment of the membership on this forum.

Not to get off topic…

I’ve not spoken a whole lot over my time on here but whenever I did, I used to find it hard to say anything about the prequels because of the kind of response people used to get from those kind of posts. I don’t mind talking about them now due to the sequels but I’ve also noticed a crack down on those kind of responses. Maybe it was just my insecurity and I am actually totally wrong but I’ve noticed this crack down happen over the last year or two, while the Disney movies were coming out.

Hopefully it was just my insecurities or a coincidence.

I read it as more a joke / humour - and was awaiting a follow up post ‘He IS the Senate’ etc

(or maybe now a follow-up of ‘He is ALL of the Senate’)

It was weird as hell to see Luke call hom Palpatine. In the OT he was known as the Emperor, in TLJ Luke calls him Sideous.

I finally saw The Rise of Skywalker yesterday. It’s a flawed and lore crushing entry but also an entertaining popcorn movie. I think pertaining to established lore and canon it really doesn’t understand the source material but at the same time as of right now I find it to be a fun time if you don’t take it seriously.

Lore Crushing and Other Bits:

Rey being a Palpatine. It makes no sense for him to have a son within established lore. Namely in Revenge of the Sith for example he tells Anakin “I need your help son”. It’s very clear to me that he saw himself as a surrogate father. Maybe even as the father but that seemed to be more connected to Darth Plagueis. Rey’s lineage also felt like trying to pander to everyone and not stepping on any toes.

Palpatine using Force Lightning on the fleet. So, why exactly didn’t he do this over the Battle of Endor?

Force powers. They were really cool but within established lore context don’t make sense.

Planet Killing Star Destroyers - What?!

Knights of Ren? Not important.

How did Maz get the lightsaber? Not important.

Snoke? Pointless and possibly just a clone vessel for Palpatine?

Prequel references and bringing the saga full circle? Nope.

I’m sure there’s more I could say but I need to see it again to give an ultimate verdict. Right now, I found it to be entertaining on it’s own merits namely with Leia and Luke training, Leia training Rey, Rey and Ben, Lando, and some other bits but as a conclusion I find it’s a contradiction to lore and canon. It equally feels like it’s trying to course correct The Last Jedi at times which made it very wonky and like two different visions were clashing. Star Wars was always more than popcorn fun for me but that is now what it’s come to and I think I’m at peace with that. I can let go now.

I miss George.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

Is it weird I found the planet killing Star Destroyers logical within the lore? It feels a natural progression from Death Star, not unlike the evolution and mass production of atomic weapons.

I find Starkiller Base more egregious because it’s big thing is “it’s bigger”. It becomes so big it’s unbelievable, and it’s a very stupid concept to make yourself a bigger target after two failed Death Stars.

Not sure it fits for me but you make a fair point.

I agree on Starkiller Base completely. It wasn’t needed. I did have a theory back when that Snoke was only using the First Order and Starkiller for a greater purpose. He’d then use the Knights of Ren who were hiding in the Unknown Regions waiting to invade. All while searching for answers to immortality. That’s why I thought in a way he used Starkiller and “died” to take himself out of the picture to divide the First Order and even Resistance further. Especially with his “You wonder why I keep a rapid cur in such a place of power. A curs weakness properly manipulated can be a sharp tool.” This all ended up meaning nothing. Except maybe the draining Life Force which maybe was for immorality.

If SKB actually felt like a weird ancient weapon sent out from the unknown regions to mess up the status quo, then I’d be happier about it. But they didn’t even retcon something like that in, they still didn’t explain the status of the new republic or the origins of the First Order. I expected to see Lando actually visit the remaining rebels or something that showed members of the First Order struggling with the idea of joining the Final Order. It’s weird.

I tend to agree, I’m not sure I understand the hate against the Death Star Destroyers besides the fact that we’ve had a lot of Death Stars. The fact that SKB is bigger is basically irrelevant.

I thought it would’ve been interesting if it took 4-8 Star Destroyers firing at the core together in order to destroy a planet. Each Destroyer isn’t equally as powerful as one Death Star, instead it sacrifices firepower for mobility.
