Doctor Who — Page 92

I’m bummed for the long wait but that seems to be the way things are done these days. Doctor Who, Game Of Thrones, Better Call Saul, Stranger Things, My Brilliant Friend, Lost In Space, Sherlock, and a few others I watch. I don’t watch GoT, but I know they also have long breaks.

I’m ok with the breaks. TV in general these days is big budget Hollywood quality. Everything seems top notch because (I suspect) they take longer and put a lot of time & effort into the shows.

Regarding Doctor Who specifically; Very happy with this first season. It seemed to fly by. Only one more and we’re on our break. I don’t have strong thoughts one way or another on the Christmas episodes. They’ve been hit or miss quality-wise, so I don’t see it as a big deal that we’re getting a New Years episode instead.

I’m just glad we’re getting one more.

It’s obviously not hot property any more,…hopefully they take the criticism on board & correct their course

To which criticism are you referring?

Viewing figures have taken a nose dive, general reviews here in UK are not great, complaints about the PC subject matter, I personally gave up after episode 3, I found it rather lame & uninteresting & a bit preachy

I had high hopes for a new direction & I’m still optimistic it will pick up again

A shame you gave up after Rosa mate, think you missed out some good episodes and intriguing stories - not without faults or criticism, but enjoyable overall.

Re the viewing figures - how so a ‘nosedive’ mate? Comparing season 11’s viewing figures to season 10’s - they have improved… both seasons lose viewers as the series progresses, yet season 11’s lowest rating beats the highest rating of season 10:-

http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-series-11-2018-uk-ratings-accumulator-88397.htm

http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-series-10-2017-uk-ratings-accumulator-84045.htm

Season 11 had generally positive reviews overall in the UK mainstream media (that I read, anyway - Guardian, Mirror, Telegraph, Times, Independent & Metro).

Though I don’t know much about the complaints ‘about the PC subject matter’ - didn’t see any of it myself, yet am sure many social media clickbaiters were / are out in force (as they seemingly are so for so many other franchises / series).

Not saying the season wasn’t without it’s faults - yet hopefully some will be ironed out for Season 2 as everyone is more settled into the show. Some of the criticism over the ‘villains’ seems fair enough, as does not really delving into the companions individually (though has been an emphasis on ‘team’ this season), and a little more focus on the Doctor herself would be welcome in the future, I think.

Hope you enjoy Season 2 more mate.

Good points, Jason. People that might not want any diversity in the cast/crew might find it too liberal or PC, but so what? If anything, the content itself was far more centrist than ever before in the new series. It’s possible that Chibnall’s clunky exposition and frankly rather poor dialogue made things stand out a bit more, for people that are sensitive to certain things.

It also had perhaps the most conservative leaning episode since the Tom Baker serial, Sunmakers, with Kablam.

I myself found it a fairly disappointing season, mostly, that did a few things quite right. Chibnall’s own episodes felt of an amateurish quality, and the season planning (and what was done with the main characters) quite poor. But all of the guest writer scripts were well written, and a couple of them were great (Demons, Takes You Away, nearly Rosa with the faults likely Chibnall’s doing).

I hope things get tightened up next time. The presentation has taken a nice turn. Good direction, quality CGI, and I do like the new composer. Great actors, but each episode felt like they were still starting out and hadn’t developed the characters. I would love to see the role of show runner be more like a classic series producer, where they don’t write a single word of the scripts. 😉

I gave another episode a go,…I watched the King James I episode & found it pretty interesting up until the sci-fi bit, the mud zombies were quite good, but I still found the story a bit dumb,…It didn’t whet my appetite for watching any more

If you also don’t like “It Takes You Away,” I’d sit the rest of Chibnall and/or Thirteen out, I’d wager. Or maybe “Demons of the Punjab,” but that depends on how much focus they’re going to put on historical episodes going forward (if they keep it up, then “Rosa,” Demons," and “Witchfinders” will probably be the best indicator of where things go; if they’re going to stick to sci-fi stuff, then “Tsuranga Conundrum,” “It Takes You Away,” and “The Battle of Ranksoor Av Kolos” are probably the best benchmarks).

I enjoyed the season as well. It wasn’t bogged down by a bunch of UNIVERSE ENDING nonsense. But the views here are not unique, everywhere I’ve gone I’ve seen nothing but negative reviews of the season.

I did like the variety of relatively small to moderate scale threats. That’s an aspect Kerblam did well with, as did Demons and several others.

6 planets isn’t a terrible scale for the finale, but it’s too bad it was awful in nearly every other way. 😃 Still, as I said, the non Chibnall episodes were generally quite good.

They are lovely trailers, but for that the price being asked for the the blurays, they should be! 😃

I will wait until they come down in cost.

In case anyone missed this:

The Daleks are back! In black and white, and on YouTube! The metal monsters are once again menacing secret service agents from Earth on the planet Kembel, in a recreation of a Doctor Who adventure not seen since 1965.

Using the original script, replica props, vintage TV methods and the contemporary voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs, the missing episode Mission to the Unknown has been remade by film and media students at the University of Central Lancashire. The recreation premiered on the official BBC Doctor Who YouTube channel at 5:50pm on 9 October, exactly 54 years after the story was broadcast for the one and only time.

It is unique in the original Doctor Who series for being the only episode not to feature the Tardis, Doctor or any of his companions. Instead, it was a standalone story starring arch-enemies the Daleks, which acted as a prequel to a later 12-part adventure The Daleks’ Master Plan (and quite possibly, in the mind of Dalek creator Terry Nation, as a pilot for a Dalek spinoff series that never materialised.)

Would a Dalek spinoff have worked in 1965? On this evidence, yes.

The episode sets up a galactic war between humans and Daleks, and an undercover security force sent from Earth to thwart them. It introduces an alliance of alien races, who are determined to invade the solar system alongside the Daleks. You can easily imagine a multitude of further stories set in this universe.

It is probably the only Doctor Who episode that could be completely remade convincingly in this way. The lack of regular cast involvement means there’s nobody trying to imitate William Hartnell as the Doctor, and the characters of Marc Cory and Gordon Lowery (played by Marco Simioni and Dan Gilligan) get to establish themselves on their own basis over the 25 minutes.

Inevitably, given the source material, it is a bit stilted, stagey and even slapstick at points. But the recreation of the Daleks, and the way they are shot in stark black-and-white, is effective. The Kembel jungle and the dangerous Varga plants look comparable to 60s Doctor Who sets, and the Dalek death ray effect is true to the source. The storyline is quite slight, though, making this an interesting curiosity rather than a ‘must see’.

It says something about the mythical status of the missing Doctor Who episodes that what is essentially a student project has ended up getting a run-out on the BBC’s official YouTube channel.

There are still 97 episodes of 60s Doctor Who missing. They occasionally turn up, most recently in October 2013. However, Mission to the Unknown was never sold overseas, meaning there is virtually zero chance of it ever being found.

The production took five days in February 2019, and former Blue Peter presenter Peter Purves, who played the Doctor’s companion Steven in 1965, visited the set, saying: “This is an absolutely wonderful project. I can remember at the time that Bill Hartnell and I were a bit miffed not to be included in any way at all … but it was a nice week off in the end!”

I thought this was a good place for us Whovians to find this quality project too - I hope theis is okay and the mods don’t mind?
