Is it just me or is the image geometry different?

The movies are cropped to 2.39:1 vs the 2.35:1 they’ve been in the HD Branch.

But is there less image on top and bottom or more on the sides? Or something in between?

Given they went back to the (anamorphic) negative, isn’t there a chance that the AR difference is because the de-stretch is a bit different?

It’s not consistent. Sometimes there’s less on the bottom, sometimes more on the sides, sometimes it’s cropped on all sides from the image we got in HD.

Whats wrong with some of the deleted scenes from TPM on Disney+, theres little thin black horizontal lines going through the picture, they looked much better on TPM’s first DVD release. Deleted scenes from the other Star Wars movies on Disney+ look good while some don’t look as clear. Anyone notice this?

I wonder if there’s a chance they would put these new versions in theaters sometime after The Rise of Skywalker, maybe just before a release on 4K UHD? I’m also wondering what they will show in the marathons later this month before The Rise of Skywalker.

I’m going to assume any DCP’s are still HD Branch. The use of it for the TROS teaser makes me wonder if Disney can tell the difference.

If they’re going so far as to swap out all HD versions across all the digital outlets for the new masters they’re going to make 4K DCPs available. They’re pretty easy to create and duplicate. There’s no reason not to have it done.

They only used that for the D23 preview, which only went up online AFAIK and was never sent out to theaters.

I’d be very surprised if they were still using the outdated 1.9k 2004 OT master yet again for the in-theater marathons when there’s now a true 4k cinema master that people can stream from their couch in 3.8k.

Colors still look unnatural to me, at times. 😄 And what’s with this purple-green-orange abomination!?

Wait they fixed some things but put back old errors that had previously been corrected? I’m impressed.

No, they RE-fixed errors that were in the 97SE negative that they had fixed in HD, but missed some.

It definitely went out to theaters. It played before my IMAX screening of Ad Astra.

That’s curious.

Did it have an MPAA card at the front? Are you sure it wasn’t just part of the ads before the actual trailers?

Even if I’m wrong and that trailer got sent out as an actual trailer, I’d still chalk the use of the old master up to the fact that this was still prior to the launch of D+, for which we can now clearly see they were saving the new master. Since the 2004/2011 was already sitting on the shelf the trailer people just sourced it from that.

Even if they knew the newer master was pretty much finished and about to make its debut, we forget that the first trailer for RotS that went out to theaters back in late ‘04 used footage from the Lowry master. If it’s good enough to get printed to 35mm, it’s good enough for a trailer today in 2019.

Definitely was one of the actual trailers. I don’t remember if it had the MPAA card but that’s only because at AMC they often don’t put the cards before trailers.

I saw it at a theater where they only play the trailers attached to the “print” (Ford v Ferrari).

And I still don’t believe they knew there was a difference between them at first. And I don’t see why they would hide it until D+ if they did. Early denials from LFL were that it was the same as the Blu-ray, which later changed to the “oh yeah, Lucas made this for the 3D before he left.”

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.
