I remember when seemless branching came out… and thinking that it wouldn’t be too long that we would have the possibility of being able to pick and choose what color lightsaber we could watch on future versions!

Maybe even picking what type of fighter would battle TIE fighters etc!

Oh the naivety 😃

Tighten Up and then turn it all the way up to 11!

One of John Alvin’s poster concepts for ROTJ shows Luke with a yellow or orange saber, so apparently that was in the mix for an alternative color to replace the blue blade as well. Harking back to Ralph McQuarrie’s Deak/Vader duel painting from the 1975 SW rough draft.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

It’s clear, then, that there is a deeper meaning to the lightsaber being a new colour, even if the particular colour was chosen for a purely technical reason.

Luke’s lightsaber was green because it popped against the blue sky — and because, by visually differentiating his new lightsaber from his old one, the filmmakers were able to show us that Luke had become his own man."

Now Luke’s lightsaber’s green 'cause it’s one of just two* colours Jedi cultists get to have, and Luke’s a stickler for tradition.

*Unless you’re an inconsequential nobody like Mace Windu. Then you get to have your own unique colour.

Hello this Is Barry Nolan formally with Van der Veer Photo. I should have answered this forum a long Time Ago. I did all the rotoscoping and layout for optical printing of Lightsabors for Stars Wars IV. The Compositing was done By Hugh Wade. I supervised the process for episode V and I believe episode VI was done by Peter Corran. The lightsabor blade were made white with a light blue glow around the edges. I also did the animation for the speeder in Mos Eisley. The wheels were removed and replace with background and the shadow modified. It was done about a dozen times before it was excepted. I also did the electrifying of R2D2 buy the Jawas.

Years later for the rerelease All the effects were redone and the color of the Lightsabor changed to match episodes I ,II,III.

Today I have been retired for 30 years but do make effects films for my children and grandchildren. I have tried to keep up with the technology and do it all with the computer.

Well okay, cool thanks for stopping by. I hope you’re not too sad that they’ve spent so much time burying the work of you and your colleagues.
