I wonder if the source streams will even be accessible, though. I know that for Netflix offline downloads, the copy you download isn’t the source stream, it’s a still-heavily-compressed downloadable version. I wonder if that’s what people will be able to save to their hard drives on Disney+ as well.
either way, the source will be made available sooner rather than later when the UHDs are officially released sometime next year.
Something I’m curious about is if Disney+ has multiple versions of any film. The best way to check in my mind would be to see what they have for Avatar.
For Avatar they have two versions Theatrical and Theatrical with Family Friendly Audio. Alas, no Extended Edition (which is my preferred version of the film)
Those two scenes in AOTC That had been swapped in the Blu-ray remain so.
And I noticed a distinct teal tent throughout the entire film, so it appears to be a processed version of what we got on the Blu-ray.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
I’m a layman when it comes to this, but I believe someone mentioned earlier that alien subtitles were no longer baked in for some of the films. I noticed it with Greedo, but has anyone noticed if this is also the case for Jabba in ROTJ?
Also, is this the first time where the alien subtitles aren’t baked into the film?
The 2011 Blu-Rays didn’t have baked-in subs either. Same with Solo. Only TFA and Rogue One had baked-in subs on Blu.
The color grading of the Original Trilogy in 4K on Disney+ does look far superior to the DVD and Blu-ray versions, but it’s still not perfect to me. The lightsabers looks much better, especially when Luke is training with the remote on the Falcon. However, I have been very vocal about how much I hate this dreadful teal effect being applied to 4K remasters of older films, and it does stand out on the Disney+ versions. Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens seemed to have suffered the least in 4K remasters. I have not checked out Rogue One on Disney+ yet.
This also might just be me, but it seems like the music was mixed louder than the voices in Anakin and Obi-Wan’s duel in Revenge of the Sith.

Just got home and I’m taking a look at the rest of the movies now. I imagine this has already been noted, but I’m just realizing that while the Fox fanfare remains for all of them, the green-to-gold Lucasfilm logo animation has been swapped out for the silver Disney-era version.
EDIT: Anyone know how to turn off subs? ESB defaults to English subtitles for some reason and I’m nto seeing any way to toggle it during playback.
EDIT2: I toggled closed captioning on and off a few times in the TV menu and they eventually went away. Weird.
Is it true that Disney removed “A News Corp Company” from the Fox Logo but otherwise used the static 90s version that appeared on the SE originally? Normally i don’t like tinkering with opening logos, even something minor like that, as it’s interesting to preserve the history of these companies. But as the logos have already been swapped from the original, whatever i guess.
Absolutely love the retro cinemascope logo used on SW and empire originally

I was surprised to see Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore on TCM the other night with it’s vintage 70’s Saul Bass Warner Bros. logo intact. Or does Martin Scorsese have enough clout that they don’t slap a modern logo on his films?

They got a (Theatrical Cut) - Family Version for Avatar, plus it’s in 1.78:1, and not in it’s original 2.39:1 theatrical exhibition in theaters
Haven’t all home video versions of Avatar been 1.78:1 open matte, or am I misremembering?

Warner is the worst with that. They seem intent to erase that logo from catalog titles though they ironically slap it on period pieces like Joker and Argo today. Fox and Universal usually don’t disappoint. Even Disney has been preserving the Buena Vista card lately (recently spun the Love Bug and Mary Poppins, both of which look great on blu!)

I sampled the 4K versions of the OT on Disney+ earlier. They share a lot of the same issues as the 2004/2011 masters. Colors are the biggest improvement. Colors are better and they’ve dropped the blue and pink color casts from the SE and previous DVD/Blu-ray releases. Unfortunately, it looks like another job from Lowry/Reliance Mediaworks. Moderate digital noise reduction, edge enhancement, frozen grain. Close ups look pretty solid, if not a bit soft. But anything wider and you start to see the issues. Basically, a huge disappointment if you’re a videophile and have been waiting for these 4K masters for years.
The rocks look bad, but now they look better…ish?
