4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 283

Color palette seems to look far more natural, and closer to the theatrical colors, and none of the horrible blue/magenta color noise in the C-3PO/R2-D2 shot.

Is this a brand new audio mix as well? It has the Threepio narration over the death star plans and also has “Close the blast doors!”

That’s been in ALL the Special Edition versions!

ROTJ Blu / 4K Comparison:

Far far better than the Blu-ray. This will be perfect for future Despecialized and Respecialized (97) fan preservations. The colors of ROTJ reminded me of 4K83.

It could have been sooo much better, but ROTJ looks pretty good 😃 Looking forward to see more screencaps!

I wonder how does Battle of Yavin looks like. Also - Hoth.

The “new explosion” in the Greedo shootout seems to just be a shortened version of the old one.

There’s enough versions of that scene now to be able to queue up in random order and gamble on what’ll come up.

I felt some sympathy for Adywan as he works on his ROTJ grade. Good as a new source is to have, it can render much work already done moot. Not even sure whether to hope this is the case (for his well being) or not (for a better end result).

My stance on revising fan edits.

Well, I just finished ANH and I liked it. As someone who was raised on the 1997 SE tapes, I’m more version-agnostic than most here, and my main issue with the 2011 Blu-Ray was less about it being the SE and more about the fact that they looked like they were held together with scotch tape, spit, and good intentions. I can’t speak to this blurry reel in ROTJ yet, but ANH looks a lot more polished and internally consistent than it has in the last couple releases, and I can see myself revisiting this when doing full-saga watch-throughs in the future.

I’m really curious how big a help these UHD versions are going to be for fan-restoration purposes next year.

Re: Joefavs’ “internal consistency” note - I’ve also heard that a lot of the background plates & matte paintings have been “locked down” so to speak? They didn’t replace them, obviously, but they definitely tried to make sure they blend better? They’re stabilized at the very least?

I noticed the same thing, particularly when Ben was shutting down the tractor beam. The garbage mattes are also gone from the TIE fighter attack, and a lot of the CG on Tatooine doesn’t pop quite so much. Across the board, everything seems to blend better than it has in the past.

I can’t confirm this personally, but I’ve seen a couple people mention that on Pablo Hidalgo’s now private Twitter, he said the latest Greedo change did come from George Lucas himself when they started work on the 4K restoration.

Grain of salt, of course, but that makes more sense than LFL/Disney deciding to arbitrarily make one more weird change without his input.

That doesn’t account for the idea that mattes have stabilized and gate weave has been eliminated, though. I think if they went to the trouble to accurately (and finally!) color correct all the lightsabers and re-do them while restoring for 4K, they probably (and finally!) erased all the garbage mattes and stabilized the image, too.

David: upthread I linked to someone screencapping Pablo’s tweets.

This is Pablo Hidalgo’s comments on it…

I’m honestly a little bummed out to learn that Pablo kept some people unblocked. I’m one of the good ones, damn it!

So one last shitty Lucas change but better colors all the way ? Sounds like a good deal to me.

I thumbed through bits of A New Hope in 1080p non-HDR and can confirm that the regrade looks a lot better regardless of those visual enhancements. I don’t know if it quite compares to some of the fan efforts here but it looks consistent with no strange blue/magenta tinting.

Well I’m only looking at screenshots but the color timing does seem to be better than the BD (low bar of course). I think the hope will be that next year when the discs come out that that yield enough quality to be helpful for the DEed.

Need to see that Jabba scene in motion but agree with everyone else the new color makes a much nicer blend, and I hate that scene!
