Not really, could just be on the cutting room floor.

Maybe he should have represent a young version of or a possessed person by Palpatine, before McDiarmid said he would be on board for Episode 9.

Cover from Empire film magazine:

I love the color clashing for the two themes - characters of the film 😃

Am I the only one who feels Maz has been shoved into the franchise just because she hasn’t died yet? She served her purpose in TFA. In TLJ her appearance seemed like fan-service for someone no one cared about (yet, I’m sure the kids of today will have nostalgia for her in the future). Who knows what role she will play in TROS. Maybe it’s important, but I’m worried it will just be an another random “hey I’m here and I’m helping because I’m good!”

It’s not that big a deal; just something minor that keeps on bugging me.

Is it possible she had some scenes with Leia in TFA?

She did. You can see her handing Leia the lightsaber in one of the TFA trailers.

Maz was fine in TFA, but to me she felt unnecessarily shoehorned into TLJ. I really can’t see where she’d fit into this larger story. To me, it cheapens the weight of the character from TFA.

Side note: As I’ve said for a few years, when you have a woman this beautiful and talented in the cast - don’t cover her with CGI. Find another role for her and get someone else to read for the drawn character.

IIRC she said she wanted to be the mo-cap character? I remember her giving an interview before the movie came out where someone basically said the same thing to her and she was like “I wanted to try this type of acting, because it seemed like a rare opportunity, especially for something like Star Wars.” I might be misremembering that, but I do remember thinking something similar before I was told she really wanted to do it, and was surprised.

I guess the current rumors are that Maz helps in the big battle against the Emperor in the third act, shows up to help with a squad of pirate warships or something like that. I don’t know if that would really cheapen anything. Seems like a decent payoff to the First Order wrecking her castle.

I’ve got no problems with Maz if there’s a logical reason for her to be there. She just felt shoehorned into TLJ like it was an afterthought. Maybe if it had taken some effort for our heroes to find her and get the info instead of just making a holographic phone call?
Would be nice if she’s got a new establishment big enough to hold the victory celebration party. The movie has to end with one, right? 😉

Phasma had a logical reason to be there and is Finn’s sort of main nemesis. That arc seems finished. If she shows up in TROS, she’d better be half cyborg or something after her apparent demise.

I actually want her back in the TROS. Battle scarred and gnarly. And give her something to do beyond perfunctory action beats for crying out loud.

I think that and she explicitly said she wanted to do mo-cap characters for a bit in big name movies (this and Jungle Book) because she didn’t want people watching a family movie and remembering her role from 12 Years a Slave.

Personally I don’t really get the shoehorned complaints for TLJ. To me, being shoehorned in means having a role that fills no purpose. Maz’s role in TLJ was short and served an understandable, narrative purpose. Considering she wouldn’t have really fit anywhere in TLJ’s story, I thought her cameo was pretty much the one way to include her that wouldn’t have felt shoehorned in. As for TROS, considering we know officially nothing at all about her role, it seems weird to declare one way or another.

She was essentially taking on the Basil Exposition role from the Austin Powers movies. It’s just she seemed wasted in a role that could have been filled by a minor character, like some sort of alien informant who traffics in information. (Plus you get a new action figure for the kiddies. 😃 )
I was actually more curious about the firefight she was in than the filmmaker’s were willing to show us.

Agree shoehorned is the wrong way to put it, but these side characters really have only had about the same development going into the third film as maybe Jabba or Greedo from the OT, I want to connect, but I feel like I’m seeing more concepts of characters than full bodied established ones, I really need to see IX to declare one way or the other on a lot of the new characters.

I don’t think she’s coming back but I absolutely agree it’d be awesome if she came back like some sort of Mad Max henchman

I mean there’s only so much time and so many characters. Seems reasonable that some would end up with smaller roles and less development (like Greedo and Jabba).

I thought Jabba was well developed for a slimy piece of worm ridden filth. 😉

I agree, he was as developed as his role required.

Phasma was a half-hearted attempt to make a new Boba Fett that failed. She-Kenny of the First Order could be cut entirely from both movies and nothing would be missing.

If it had been Gene Roddenberry directing, he’d have gone on a tangent about how the Hutts reproduce.

‘The media push for Space Movie 9: The Risening starts this week. Even if you’re sticking to quote-unquote “official” sources, you may want to consider drawing your online curtains to avoid seeing something you’d rather not. Tastes vary.’

He does later clarify…

‘(Before some clickbait movie site runs too far with this, I meant magazine covers and interviews and Force Friday this week)’

So it looks like we’ll be seeing some more publicity, and possibly some spoilers within later this week.

(and maybe an official trailer sometime soon too!)

Well, I’ve never heard of Space Movie 9: The Risening so it sounds like they really need to have a “media push”

Hopefully it fairs well against Rise of the Skywalker, but I don’t know, that’s gonna be a tough movie to compete with in December holiday season!
