In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity? — Page 4

It is really more silly than a thermal exhaust port, right above the main port? 😉

Where were you in '77?

It’s not more silly, but it is too similar.

Bringing back the original voice of Admiral Ackbar, Erik Bauersfeld, (now 93!) is a huge plus in my book. Yeah, it’s easy to record movie dialog just about anywhere now, but that they went that extra mile just makes me happy.

So that was really him? I thought so. I remember seeing something right after the news broke that Ackbar would be in the film about how they ought to get him back, but I hadn’t heard for sure whether they actually did.

A few years on… I really liked that Luke’s appearance in it was left until the end of the film - building up the myth and legend around the character - plus the anticipation - then leaving it for TLJ.

A bold and somewhat risky move - yet think it worked really well.

A good point that, mate - and for the other new main characters too.

I like the early part of the film with Rey. At her AT-AT home. Start and build her character very well, and then into rest of story.

Another thing The Force Awakens nailed was… Harrison’s departure from Star Wars / Solo’s death:-

‘Harrison Ford on the death of Han Solo: “It’s not that I wanted Han Solo to die, I wanted Han Solo to be able to lend some significant emotional weight to the story. I was resolved to be useful and to pass on responsibilities to others and get out of the way.”

The scene was beautifully done and shot, and certainly had that emotional resonance that had an affect on this new story, and also it’s characters - both old and new, too.

At the time it was released, it was probably the prettiest Star Wars film ever made. At least until Rogue One came out.

But so far as technical filmmaking craft, I have a hard time knocking anything about The Force Awakens. Creative decisions in storytelling, directing, editing… sure, I get a lot of the criticisms, some I agree with some I don’t. But the way this movie was shot, and the way this movie sounds? Damn near flawless. It is one hell of a pop confection. Abrams, Dan Mindel, Ren Klyce and Matthew Wood were literally at the top of their game from an audio/visual perspective.

Looking back at this thread, three and some years on, I think we can probably safely put to rest that the new Williams themes aren’t hummable/memorable? I think Rey’s theme, Kylo’s themes, and the Resistance march have all joined the pantheon of all-time great Star Wars music. Maybe there’s a nit to pick with the mix, but in terms of things TFA nailed, I think the music in general is near the top.

Yes actually, it’s amusing to read our interaction years prior and can happily concede to that yes, I do find TFA’s (and perhaps an extension to TLJ) being just as worthy as any of the other SW scores.

I too was like “I don’t know that Williams really brought it with this release” upon the first month or so with the soundtrack. And then it was like something unlocked one day. I couldn’t even tell you what it was, but I very much remember one day not just realizing how packed full of goodness that score was, but how well it fit in with his original trilogy work. It really did feel of a piece with the original score in the way it sounds, the way it moves through various emotions, the way all the motifs are knitted together in ways you seriously have to listen for to discover.

It’s a soundtrack that is KNITTED together, really. And if you don’t know what the design is, you might just confuse it for a lot of basic (or even bland) underscore. But once you realize just how many motifs and themes are being moved around and interpreted/re-interpreted, that Force Awakens score just opens up.

I’d love to be able to see one of those live-to-picture concerts for Force Awakens some day.

If you’re looking to deep-dive the music, this guy has a nice podcast series on the music of John Williams, specific to Star Wars.

I’m very familiar with Mr. Collins - his Soundtrack Show is very, very good. I like those old Oxygen shows, but I also wish there were versions of it where it was just him. His co-host doesn’t add much and is usually just distracting.

The soundtrack is great especially the Snoke and Kylo ones.
