Disney+ streaming platform : Star Wars content & various other info — Page 2

Not really interested enough yet in The Mandalorian or any of the other SW content to subscribe, but as soon as they get a bunch of the old Disney, live-action classics up, I’ll subscribe for sure. I’ve got 3 kids and they absolutely love movies like Swiss Family, Treasure Island, 20,000 Leagues, etc…

I don’t know why Disney is so allergic to the episode numbers for the films. You would think that would make it easier for someone to navigate these menus.

They do seem to be pretty good about putting them in chronological order on Disney+'s interface, though, instead of in alphabetical order. That’s nice to see.

I also noticed that in the D23 trailer, they made sure to go through the saga in chronological order. Which makes sense, as the saga really only works in that order. Watching them in episode order really handicaps the prequels more than they’re already handicapped, since there are things in the prequels that basically don’t work at all unless you have a working knowledge of the three movies that preceded them. not just from a plotting perspective, but a tone and feeling POV. A lot of those movies rely on you knowing what’s being referenced, or what’s coming down the road in the original trilogy.

it seems like they haven’t made any sort of official announcement (I don’t think they ever would, either) but based on their platform, their pages on other platforms, and general practices like in the D23 trailer, Disney now believes the best way to work through the Star Wars saga is in chronological/release order, and not episode order.

I agree. They could at least have it on the bottom of the cover like, “Episode III”, or something. But I guess they think it’ll be simple enough for people to look it up if they don’t know. Regardless, I agree with you.

Though maybe they don’t because they don’t want laypersons to think they need to start at I. Most people would say to go in chronological order, so by not having the episodic numbers it might encourage people to watch in an order that is based off their displayed release dates.

It is cool how they really seem to taking full advantage of their platform by adding stuff like documentaries and old cartoons, and not just the expected shows and movies. Thanks for sharing this with us Dre!!

I think it’s because the episode numbers becoming a prominent part of the marketing and labeling really only happened for the prequels. Before (and after) that point, the focus was less on the episode number (which we know was mostly a gimmick) and more on the title itself.

I’m curious as to whether Empire of Dreams has at least been upscaled. I remember hearing they were working on making as much of that HD as possible, so when it appeared on Amazon Prime I checked it out and it seems to be a straight DVD rip.

Also interesting to get confirmation that the files being used for Star Wars are the digital masters, complete with that weirdly cut-up fanfare over the Lucasfilm logo and the 20th Century Fox logo only appearing on Star Wars. I wonder if they’re only using those for this test, or if that’s going to be what’s rolled out for the rest of us in November. I was pretty curious as to whether they were going to reinstate the logos for the entire OT/PT, or cut them all off entirely. But if this holds through for official launch, it’ll basically just be blu-ray rips.

For the OT it was the titles themselves, for the PT it was the episode numbers, and for the ST they clearly wanted you to care most about the fact that it was STAR WARS.

Yeah, I’m also curious if these will still be the old OT masters once the service goes live or if that’s only for the test. It’s especially curious that they’d be recycling them yet again when Rogue One is being made available for streaming in 4k.

Rogue One looks awesome in 4K. The HDR color grading is a massive improvement over the bluray. 😃

Are you actually streaming it in 4k right now? Every other account I’ve read from the Netherlands is that they’re marking things as being available in 4K but none of the content is actually encoded at that level. If you’re getting an actual 4k stream and not a 1080 stream marked as 4K, it means they’re already starting to update/upgrade the files they’re serving since the platform went live.

Also, I’m guessing the Ewok movies and show isn’t up there? I have yet to see anyone say they’ve watched them, and considering people are finding stuff like the '90s X-Men and Gargoyles episodes, Ewoks should have turned up by now.

The quality is a lot better than the streaming version I have on google movies, but the most obvious difference is the colors, which have a much higher dynamic range. The Ewok are not available.

Is “Empire of Dreams” in HD? I heard the rumor that they remastered the original documentary one or two years go. Would be interesting to know if they now offer that version on Disney+ .

Here’s a video of someone demonstrating Disney+:
I already have Disney+ !!! First impressions of the trial in The Netherlands!

Having also checked out a couple of other YouTube vids of Disney’s streaming trial, it looks as if this will be an essential entertainment hub for a lot of families around the world when it rolls out properly. Too bad it won’t be available to those of us here in the U.K. until some point next year, however.

It looks like the Disney+ logo appears momentarily when you press ‘play’ on a chosen movie (see the 2 min. 6 sec. mark on the video link above), so it seems like a new generation of ‘younglings’ wiil be getting their first introduction to THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with this alternative opening sequence in future - Disney+ logo, then revised short music cue over the Lucasfilm logo, before the silent blue wording appears…

Oh well, I just hope their parents stick 'em on in their ‘theatrical release’ order at least… 😉

Hmm, would it be possible to rip those DVD/Bluray cover looking images, and the big preview images/backgrounds? I have a soft spot for consistent saga posters in my Plex Library, even if they’re photoshops rather than actual drawings/paintings. Unfortunately I’m not in the Netherlands. There must be some way to get them from the website.

i came here to ask the same thing.

can someone load the service in a web browser and use “view-source” or inspector to get URLs for those jpegs?

‘Free Disney+ pilot launches in the Netherlands, here’s what it’s like’:-

https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/12/20862167/free-disney-plus-hands-on-pilot-marvel

The article claims that Rogue One is available now in 4K (along with 16 other titles) - impressive…

From Dre’s posted images above this does look to have a good simple UI too (which is always a bonus 😃)

Keep checking to see if they accidentally release ‘The Mandalorian’ before the 12th November, please Dre 😉

Am very much liking that ‘Empire Of Dreams’ is on there - hopefully more Star Wars documentaries and BTS programs will be added over time…

Rogue One in 4K is looking pretty sweet! 😃 I will look for any accidental Mandalorian content. 😉

This has been the best info on the new Disney+ I’ve seen! Thanks DrDre

That’s the way I prefer it. To me, titles carry more weight than “Episode…”.

I made different experiences, up until now. People I know, family members and friends are always calling the movies by their episode titles when they talk about the Star Wars saga films. Not “The Empire Strikes Back”, not “the third movie from the Prequels”, … they call them Episode 1 - 8 (9). So from a marketing point of view, it would have been consequent to finish the Skywalker saga with episode titles and let them stand as what they are: one big story about the Skywalker family. Besides that, it sounds more like a drama or a poem. And to me, that was the origin of Star Wars.

Here’s everything Star Wars coming to Disney+ in the US on November 12’:-

https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-disney-plus-november-12

^ nothing new in there - seems to be more of a reminder for the Star Wars content we already know will be available…

A little surprising the 2008 theatrical ‘The Clone Wars’ film isn’t being shown on the service.

Still no more news of Disney providing a specific release date for Disney+ in the UK…

‘The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars series, only on #DisneyPlus. Coming to you early 2020.’ - https://twitter.com/StarWarsUK/status/1165147142241079296 - has been the only indicator so far.

When it launched in the Netherlands, the Clone Wars movie was categorized under “Specials” instead of with the films. I don’t blame them. =P

Jedit: It looks like they might have updated the article. The Clone Wars movie is now listed after ROTS in the films section.

Taking away importance from the episode number and making it look like a seamless whole. Good idea for the branding.
