Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 103

From the article

“The character of Leia is really, in a way, the heart of this story. When we were talking about this story we realized we could not possibly tell the end of these nine films without Leia,” Abrams said. The actor passed away before filming began, but Abrams still had some unused footage of Fisher from The Force Awakens, “that we realized we could use in a new way so Carrie, as Leia, gets to be in the film.” But here’s where the story takes a turn. “I wasn’t supposed to be here,” Abrams said, as he wasn’t originally intended to direct the first and last installments in the sequel trilogy. But before her death, Fisher wrote a prescient dedication into her book The Princess Diarist. “She was almost sort of supernaturally witty and magical in a way,” Abrams said. On the pages she had written, “‘And special thanks to J.J. Abrams for putting up with me twice.’ Now, I had never worked with her before The Force Awakens and I wasn’t supposed to do this movie, so it was a classic Carrie thing to sort of write something like that and it could only mean one thing for me. And I could not be more excited to have you see her in her final performance.”

This is official? It looks like a fan poster with some videogame art of Palpatine slapped on.

I was going to say the same thing. Palpatine’s face looks like it’s from a PS2-era prerendered cinematic. Not great.

Well, I’m awaiting for the inevitable youtube videos outraged at the thought of Rey winning the sabre fight vs Kylo - despite Kylo HAVING THE HIGH GROUND in that teaser poster!!! If this happen in the film it means Rey is now even more powerful than Anakin was and this is now 100% GUARANTEED CONFIRMED EVIDENCE that Rey is a total Mary Sue!!! 😉

I have to say, despite Palpatine looking a little cartoony, I really like this teaser poster.

My feelings as well.

In an odd way I kinda like the cartoony aspect, gives it an over-the-top pulpy feel.

In related news, apparently the image of Palpatine is actually a picture of a toy, or so that’s what people have deduced. If true that’s pretty funny.

It makes sense, no way palps is just going to look the same after everything and anything more official would be too revealing when they want to save it.

I mean at this point it’s still entirely unclear what his involvement actually is. Will he even appear visually at all? Who’s to say. But apparently his presence, whatever it is, is enough for his ghostly visage to loom over the poster.

They just put out a brand new trailer for the film at D23 this weekend! From what I’ve heard, they may release it online on Monday (don’t know how true that is), but from what I’ve heard from people who saw it, they said that Rey appears wearing black robes and wielding a double bladed red lightsaber.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Toys have been used in Star Wars before.

Where were you in '77?

Honestly it was probably the highest resolution image of the OG Emperor they had on hand. And really, the fakest thing about it on the poster are the eyes, which is only because they weren’t glowing yellow on the toy.

Cool retro-version of the poster based off the Revenge of the Jedi teaser poster by Jason Cryer on Twitter. He has the title as Rise of Skywalker instead of THE Rise of Skywalker, but it is still good. I can see someone using this for their fan edit poster. Can one of you brilliant boys fix the title?

He also made a version of the poster that adds a “wrinkly old man” texture to Palpatine’s skin. Very subtle but I think there is a noticeable difference.

Honestly the logo alone is a big improvement

The Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker would be a nifty alternate title.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Can’t agree. That treatment worked for ROTJ but I’m not liking it here.

Otherwise I really dig the retro look, although I think he pushed the effect a bit too far.

I don’t mind the ROTJ style title treatment, though I don’t like the big S on Skywalker.

Yeah that and the gradient are the main reasons why I don’t like it.

Just watched it, and my reaction is a little meh. All the footage from the OT and PT were from the 2011 blurays, as far as I could tell. The new footage is not bad, but I can’t say I love it, either. After seeing the D23 footage, I’m on the fence about Palpatine’s return. As critical as I have been of TLJ, when I heard Palpatine without the factor of surprise from the first teaser, I couldn’t help but get a feeling of regression. It’s early days of course, but these are my thoughts at this point in time.

After watching the special look I’m more convinced now that there are going to be death star like weapons in TROS and I’m not looking forward to it. I love the SE so much and I gave TFA a pass with Starkiller, but to bring back more death stars is just something I am not looking forward to.

Also Dark Rey looks weird, I’m hoping it’ll look better in context. I think this is the first time where I’m seeing shots from a star wars movie and am just so confused on how they are going to work.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

There’s a shot of some red laser exploding into a rock (after the “evil Threepio” shot) that could be “Starkiller II”. That would be a shame.

Besides that though I personally enjoyed the trailer. But I’m near certain Evil Rey is a force vision. The marketing is pushing the final battle to be Kylo and Rey (with a blue saber) on the Falcon in the rain. They show a shot of it in the trailer, and Rey very clearly is on the light side.

I think that from these clips Starkiller II and Evil Rey Vision are both certain.
