Ironically, Tom Selleck was almost in Raiders. 😉

Yes and there’s even an episode of Magnum (Legend of the Lost Art) in which this is parodied. 😃

There’s also the Robot Chicken sketch about the Jaws Special Edition, which is really about Star Wars.

😄 I hadn’t seen that before! Hilarious.

Another good one that covers similar territory is the South Park episode, Free Hat.

Wow, I don’t think I ever saw that Magnum episode!

This is a lot of stuff. It should be posted somewhere more prominently, or even turned into a video series.

Aye mate - a documentary style video of it (or maybe a powerpoint style presentation - a la the Rebel Command briefing the Rebel pilots for the Death Star attack in '77 😉) would be great - as are some of the suggestions made with in this linked thread, and probably more effective than the ‘wall of text’ that this turned into! 😃

I certainly don’t have the skills needed for anything like that - though people are most welcome to give it a go…

Now this move by Lucas and Hobson to save the archive can only be commended and on a personal level, I’m delighted that they took this action, yet at the same time, it serves to reinforce the double standards and contradictions by Lucas regarding his own work.

Mellody Hobson, president of Chicago-based Ariel Investments, and her husband, film-maker George Lucas, sought through their San Francisco-based Capital Holdings V firm to take possession of the collection because it was used as collateral for a $12 million loan they made to Johnson Publishing in 2015. The loan has been in default for several years and they’re now owed $13.6 million. They were particularly concerned about the safety of the collection, noting it was sitting uninsured on leased premises.

“The risk of inadvertent disaster cannot be overstated,” the billionaire couple’s Capital V said in its April 22 filing with the court. “As the world has seen in recent days, historical icons are not immune from catastrophe and can be destroyed within minutes. Such risk is especially prevalent for fragile photographs.”

If only Lucas felt this way about his own material.

Good grief oojason, you’ve done it again during my recent absence!

Although it’s gonna bring back a lot of the old pain and disappointment for me in certain aspects, I’ll certainly take the time to have a ‘nostalgic’ read of your latest extensive effort here. I don’t know whether to thank you or dis you. 😉

Ditto, many happy returns to him.

Despite my criticisms of Lucas, I still admire him in many ways.

Thinking about this thread got me to watch “The People vs George Lucas” again. That documentary could have been a whole lot more harsh. Perhaps it should have been. It’s such a conflicting situation. I admire him for creating Star Wars and am grateful for all his contributions to cinema in general, but some of his comments, and more importantly his actions, are so counteractive to everything I believe made it all great to begin with.

I guess if you take a perfectionist and storyteller, they will give you some quality entertainment, but you might not get the truth about anything.

I don’t think I have seen that doc, will have to watch it sometime.

It’d certainly be interesting to see an update or addendum covering the past 10 years in a ‘The People vs George Lucas II’ or similar…

A shame the plans for an ‘Episode II’ of it featuring the Sequel Trilogy and change of ownership didn’t materialise:-

There will be a test on all categories next week 😉 j/k

There is certainly more than enough material for an excellent documentary. If told well enough, one that would even interest people outside of Star Wars fandom.

Really interesting thread. I was watching a video on YouTube about whether fans are too hard on George Lucas, that are we to blame as to why Disney is now at the helm? But I remember all the criticisms that George has made over the years about Hollywood, that executives don’t know a decent movie when they get one. That it’s our fault that we don’t like “experimental” movies. I also remember how hyped all the fans were in 1999… and all the Jar Jar merch… yet all we wanted was a good movie. Are the fans too hard on George? I don’t think so. I don’t think we’re the reason why he sold his company. From my observations, fans are just giving their honest opinions.

I was trying to find an interview with George that was in Empire magazine somewhere in the early 2000s. THX had just been released on DVD so it was a tie-in piece. So like, let’s say 2004. The interviewer asked him about the new changes to the film and the quote I want to say was something like…

“Oh it’s like Star Wars. There is no original version”.

Of course I could be mistaken and this is probably paraphrasing without remembering the actual question the journalist posed but the answer he gave stuck in my brain. I don’t own any copies of this magazine any more and I don’t think there’s a transcript online.

Anyway instead I found this interview where he claims that it would cost millions to restore a film that multiple fans have recreated with nothing but their own spare time.

You’re thinking of a parody or a genre spoof, not a satire.

Lucas himself did CHOOSE to become this multi-tasking-corporate-media-mogul… Don’t know if he actually set out to accomplish some kind of pseudo-independence when becoming what he actually said he did despise during his early years in the 70s. Anyone who’s read the biography by Brian Jay Jones? I’ve got it on a shelf somewhere (a gift, not yet read) but don’t know if it gives any more insight?

I’d have to find a list of back issues from that year and see if George interview is one of the cover articles. Maybe they’re digital these days.
