Finally getting back to this project… While syncing Reel 1 with the bluray to find out which frames are missing I couldn’t help noticing the color disparity here - check out the color of the clock shadow on the bluray (bottom)!

Because shadows are always naturally neon green…

Probably wanted it to look like the shadow was showing some color from the little lights above lol.

Yes, I have the optical audio from the print, the LD audio, and the bluray and SE DVD audio. Once I patch the missing frames I’ll sync all available audio tracks.

Hypothetically, if I were to buy the Goldeneye print, how should I store it?

The best way is to freeze it using the CMI packaging method. NASA freezes their Apollo footage, for example, but they have precise humidity controlled cold archive chambers that are unattainable for most archives let alone every day folk like you and me. But the CMI method allows you to use household freezers and commonly available supplies to safely freeze and preserve film.

I have a 16mm Disney archive and preserve my prints this way. Colder is better to prevent color fade for all prints and backing degradation for acetate or nitrate prints, but unlike undeveloped film that isn’t sensitive to relative humidity, developed film sure is. 20-40% RH is the range, 20% being ideal. You basically bag the print with two pieces of dried mat board, and bag it again and throw it in the freezer along with a relative humidity indicator card.

If you don’t have a freezer that large, you could use a fridge. Failing that, the next best thing to do is keep them cool and dry. Use vented film cans like these (http://urbanskifilm.com/supplies.html) or drill holes in the cans you have. Modern prints like Goldeneye are almost certainly mylar/polyester backing and don’t suffer from vinegar syndrome or catch on fire like nitrate, but high temp/humidity will accelerate color fading regardless.

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more.

Thanks! Luckily, I haven’t had to worry about this, as the print is now in excellent hands and will be taken good care of 😃

I’ve been looking at the recent 2160p version floating around, believed to be from iTunes.

Using some of the shots here as a guide, its clear that the excessive greens and reds of the Lowry have been toned down a bit, it’s now kind of half way back to the look of the SE DVD. More fine detail is a struggle to see - numbers on the gauges do appear a bit sharper. In the case of faces there isn’t a huge difference to extra detail, the tweaked Lowry holds up well for what it is but no such tools are needed and it just seems more natural and organic now.

I’ve spent a fair time looking at all of them actually, expecting to see more fine detail due to the jump in 4K. I’ve pretty much drawn a blank on that front and if I didn’t know better was looking at the HD blown up.
The 9 that were scanned at 4K are also pretty much the same except for Diamonds Are Forever. There is a definite uptick for that one and for Golden Gun, presumably a new scan. It’s slightly more cropped, more desaturated but more fine detail.

In the case of Daylights though, clearly some more work was done… the grain pattern is possibly different and a lot more visible. When the Tangier caption appears there is a sudden overlay of even more corse grain due to that optical. There isn’t in the Lowry.
This could still very much be the MGM HD master though.

Could someone PM me a link containing the MGM/UA and United Artists logos, the Gunbarrel, and the first few seconds of the film proper? Because I was curious to see if it’s the regular UA Swoosh instead of the zooming abstract one, and if it is, I was hoping to use it for the uncut version of AFOD instead of the recreated Transamerica Ovoid seen on the most recent release.

Don’t be a jackass about it, I’m simply trying to gather materials for an ongoing project.

I won’t.

Doubting MGM/UA will make brand new masters in 4K of all movies, including the largely archaic transfers which are used from Lowry. Should be far superior with current technology. Have the black Blu-ray disc boxset which has Spectre and the bonus features disc. This would make for an excellent BD25 or BD50.

This is a really exciting project - I wonder where you are with it? If you have a scan available I’d love to discuss accessing it somehow - I wouldn’t be so fussed with corrections and restoration, the vintage look (even missing frames) would be fantastic.

I recently finished writing a book about the film (an analysis, rather than making of). I’d be happy to trade, if feasible.
