The look I am aiming to recreate was very easily obtainable in After Effects. Essentially by adjusting curves/levels, compressing highlights, and adding gate weave/grain I was able to produce an authentic look that I imagine comes close to how the movie appeared in many theatres in 2004.

Looks like screenshot comparison deleted it, could you reupload a new comparison thing?

I love the premise behind this project.

Reminds me of how Studio Ghibli’s digital productions are filtered for Blu-ray to look more like they’re made on film.
With subtle film grain, softness and even gate weave.
Though, I do like that even when they are filtered, the grain is still more subtle than actual 35mm prints or actual 35mm productions.

I love the appearance.

I really wish that your re-creation of The SpongeBob SquarePants movie would look more similar to Studio Ghibli’s approach instead of the grain of an actual 35mm print.

Ghibli’s approach is cleaner and it isn’t as overly filtered, but it still looks really nice and film-like.
Truly the best of both worlds.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

eBay has graced us with some high quality scans of the primary trailer:

While there is an obvious yellow fade over this particular print, we now have a clear idea of how the curves, exposure, and contrast of the digital animation looked when transferred over to a theatrical print. Based upon my own copy of this same trailer, and the scan uploaded to Paramount’s YouTube channel, a proper color timing can easily be reached.

Right now I’m downloading a 2005 VHS Rip of the movie because i hear it has the original colors. Do other Nick movies have their colors changed when transferred to Blu Ray?

Hm, It’s dumb how The Blu-ray May have been color corrected to look like the series. I mean yeah consistency but films should be left in their original state for all to view

I recently bought a couple film cell strips from the film, not from a trailer, but from an actual film print.

I was fortunate to attend that 35mm screening in NYC where Drymon spoke afterwards. The film was in… interesting condition. Reel 1 seemed to be a bit more saturated and with some slightly stronger contrast. The rest of the film looked more like the DVD/Blu-Ray versions.

The screening was amazing. The audience was extremely enthusiastic and everyone was applauding and laughing all the way through.

Excuse me? Did you say “The screening was amazing”?

Decided to take a stab at this myself, and I managed to get something that I think looks good. Not sure how accurate it is, but I made a LUT using a Blu-ray screenshot of the “Morning Routine” sequence and the 35mm trailer screenshot of the same frame with DrDre’s Color Matcher, and applied it to the whole film (except for the opening and closing logos), then adjusted the colors to make it look “right;” pretty much all I had to do with that was lower the reds slightly, though.

Here’s some comparisons:
http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/D6PPPNNX - Not an exact match, but a lot closer. Almost looks like the Blu-ray has a blue tint, to be honest, but I’m not quite sure if I’m really seeing that or if I’m imagining it.

http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/JM22CNNU - With this one, I’ve got a press image with noticeably different color timing from the official BD. My version doesn’t match that one exactly, barely looks similar honestly, but it looks a lot closer; leading me to believe I’m at least heading in the right direction.

http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/D6PZLNNX - Here’s a comparison from one of the live action scenes. I’m honestly the least sure of if this is accurate, but looking at this it definitely looks like the Blu-ray has a very slight blue tint. Not quite sure though; either way, the one with the LUT applied looks a lot more vibrant, in my opinion.

I’ve only experimented with the colors, so far, haven’t seen what it looks like with a grainplate applied yet.

Thanks to the new availability of a CAM rip and theatrical trailer scans provided by Notelu and bslatky respectively, I’ve been able to more concretely approximate how this thing looked on a print:

The colors still need to be tweaked for accuracy, but all in all this gels with how I remember the theatrical presentation.

It’s pretty interesting, seeing a film you’ve known your entire life in a completely new way. It legitimately looks like an actual film now, rather than an extended TV special.

I actually own a camera rip myself, got it from a bootleg DVD at a goodwill. It’s very blue, similar to Notelu’s copy.
