Star Wars: Resistance (animated series) - a general discussion thread — Page 7

As someone who has loved the previous 2 cartoons, I watched the episode “Triple Dark” and hoo boy, was it bad. It was worse than any of the Rebels filler episodes people complained about. The episode and lead character were paint-by-numbers kids show.

Hopefully that was the lowpoint of the series.

Having watched the first episode, I think it’s decent. Nothing exceptionally pointing me in one direction or other on how I feel. The premise holds potential, but I’m not necessarily hooked by the characters right now.

I’m similarly mixed on the animation style. On the one hand, it often looks pretty cheap. But there are plenty of moments where I think the faux 2D style really works and I can’t help but think “hey, that’s cool.”

Ultimately, we’ll see where it goes. At the moment it feels markedly more kid oriented than the last two shows, but then again when Rebels started I thought the same thing, so who knows.

Just finished watching the first episode. Overall I liked it

The Animation: I agree with DominicCobb in that there were moments where it looked really cool and then there were moments that it just looked like crap. However, while we’re talking about the visuals, it was really cool seeing some classic Star Wars creatures again.

The Story: For me, the coolest things were at the very beginning and the very end. I understand that we’re setting up the characters, but it honestly felt like this episode had no meat to it. Pretty much like your first day at school where you say your name and what you did last summer. Yet finally actually seeing the New Republic military in any capacity made me really happy.

I guess we shall see where it goes.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

the first order hid out in the unknown regions and kidnapped children from many families on many planets, brainwashed them and bolstered their army. they’ll probably reiterate this point in non-book / non-video game format using the show. hopefully there’s new info.

^ that sounds similar to what the (Canon) Jedi of the prequels did , except they were not in hiding .sounds like a narrative thread that will tie in to the sequel trilogy , ie, Luke’s desire to wipe the slate clean as he saw the hypocrisy and hubris of the Jedi order taking babies from their families and indoctrinating them .Ben and Yoda never told him of this in the OT ( the prequels were mostly retro active anyway ) , maybe Luke learned of this info after Ben Solo wiped out his temple , that being the case , it would go a long way to shedding more light on why he decided to wash his hands of it all . I would be pretty miffed after all he went through if that were the case . but , that’s just like , my opinion man .

I haven’t seen the show, but I am also not planning on watching it anytime soon. I’m very mixed on Dave Filoni’s Star Wars content. Clone Wars was VERY hit and miss for me, and Rebels was good, but it could’ve been a LOT better. I’m a bit surprised that he’s not front-running the show. He’s most likely working on the final season of Clone Wars and helping Jon Favreau Here’s what I have to say about the show based on what I’ve seen in the trailer.

I actually don’t like the animation. To me, it looks very cheap. It looks like the type of animation used in the early 2000’s or late 90’s for animated shows that were made intentionally to sell toys to kids. Very much like Max Steel and one of the G.I. Joe shows for kids.

I think the trailer was put together very poorly. The tone shifts around too much. It begins dramatically, then action orientated, then light hearted, along with awkward unfunny pauses mixed in. The shot of the main character hit in the face by the droid, resulting in a ridiculous look on his face was just embarrassing to me to see in Star Wars. I also think the characters seem very annoying, especially the main character. While it’s cool they were able to get Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie to reprise their roles as Poe and Phasma in the show, it’s not enough to make me watch the show. The show may be intended for kids, but why are new episodes airing on Disney Channel at 10:00 PM on Sundays? Most young kids would be in bed getting ready for school at that point. The airing time sounds makes the show seem as if it’s geared towards old-school hardcore fans.

So far, I’ve heard decent things about the show, but I don’t plan on watching it. I didn’t mean to sound negative if I did, I’m just sharing my thoughts on what I’ve seen for the promotions for Resistance.

I will just follow the story through online reviews and comments here , the animation style does not really appeal to me either , wish they would go for a more realistic approach like Final Fantasy or even the style of some of the DC animated films . I can’t see signing up for another streaming service for this . Even when the Mandalorian comes out , I may just wait for a season blu ray release or something .What the hell ever happened to free , quality tv ? oh yeah , that does not exist anymore .

I’m enjoying this. The Clone wars and Rebels both started out slow and ended up becoming great. I consider both to be essential Star Wars viewing. I’d say Resistance has started out stronger than both of those. I like the Deep Space Nine/Babylon 5 feel to the setting of life on the Colossus platform. I’m guessing in an episode very soon, Starkiller is going to fire and destroy the Hosnian system. Then things are going to get very real for the sheltered Kaz.

Were those damaged planets the result of testing Starkiller on them or the result of previous failed attempts to hollow a planet out in order to build Starkiller?

To build Starkiller, I believe mate.

(I stopped watching after a few episodes and haven’t got back into it as yet - though now as Resistance is set around the TFA timeline it may be a decent time to jump back in 😃)

Finally caught up with Resistance and I must say I underestimated it a bit. It started out so low stakes and kid-oriented that I sort of figured it’d just meander on like that for most of its run (and, well, it did for for the first ten episodes or something). But the last few episodes since the FO occupied the station (and one or two of the episodes before) have proven that in this show things will actually happen plot-wise other than random hijinks. The show is definitely still geared to a younger audience than either TCW or Rebels, but there’s some really interesting stuff going on and we’re seeing a lot of the world building that people have been craving for in the ST era. Really fascinated to see where things go once they sync up with TFA.

The beginning of Filoni’s other series began slow as well. I actually think Resistance is starting out slight better than either Rebels or The Clone Wars. I like the animation style slightly better as well. Some of the faces look a little odd at times, but the ships, droids, and the station look amazing. Kaz is a little goofy too, but I think he is about to grow up really fast once planets start blowing up.

As someone who loved TCW and thought Rebels was okay, I couldn’t make it through 10 minutes of the first episode of this.

So you guys are saying I should give it another shot?

I liked Rebels because it was more like the Original Trilogy than prequel nature of The Clone Wars. Rebels did have a “playskool” look in my opinion to some of the vehicles and helmets though. It took me some effort to get started on both of them, more so for TCW, but now I consider both to be essential viewing.

I’d definitely give Resistance another shot. As I said above, Kaz is a little goofy at times, but I think they are just setting him up to show more of a drastic arc to his character.

Some of the stories seem like throw away episodes, but I feel certain they are just setting up the world and characters for something big. The picture is getting clearer. Also, the designs and animation of the ships, creatures, and settings look great. Hang in there!

I’ll say right off the bat that for me my opinions on TCW and Rebels are switched with you. But I disagree with rodney, I get his point but I don’t think the slow to start here is really comparable to the other shows in a lot of ways.

Honestly might be better to jump into a later episode and see how you feel about that.

Just a guess, but I think Filoni is creating a family environment in just these first episodes. There’s some mild drama and action here and there, but it’s mostly the calm before the storm. The Colossus is a tight community and we are about to see people tested, bonds broken and new one formed, and all sorts of challenges when entire planets, multiple planets, are destroyed.

Any future episodes with action and drama are only going to be benefited by the character building in these early episodes.

I wouldn’t mind checking out select episodes that are recommended, once the dust of the show settles. That’s what I did for TCW.
Personally I haven’t been able to watch much of any of the three shows because they’re just so damned ugly. I’ve said before that I’d read a novelized version of TCW.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I agree with your thoughts on the animation style. I think the look of Resistance feels cheap to me.

I would have liked all three Filoni shows to have had the Galaxy of Adventures art style.

The animation is probably on par with Rebels, it’s the faux cel shading that makes it look cheap. Why they went with this look is beyond me. Makes me miss the Supermarionation styling George wanted with TCW. I eventually got used to that.

The only animation in Resistance that looks odd to me is some of their faces. Everything else looks outstanding. I’m surprised at the amount of detail in the ships and locations.

You,re probably right. The animation in Galaxy of Adventures looks nice, but at many times, a little too simple. Especially in the faces of the characters.
