Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers ** — Page 102

There are so many retailer exclusives now that its crazy what is and isn’t left out of different releases.

For Disney movies since Black Panther Wal-Mart has not had digital codes. Why? I couldn’t tell you. This is the first time it has affected a Star Wars release. It is kind of stupid how the Wal-Mart “exclusive” is the normal one without a digital code.

If you want a Blu-ray-Dvd-Digital you have to go through Disney Movie Club, which is again silly.

Target has its exclusive packaging since Rogue One with the bigger boxes akin to the LOTR DVD Extended Editions. This release this time around is 4K-BR-Digital. They are really cool but for sake of consistency I go with the next option.

Best-Buy is the steelbook store which is 4k-BR-Digital this time around. For TLJ they had two waves of steelbooks for BR-DVD-DIgital or 4K-BR-Digital, this time theres only one choice. All the Star Wras movies I have are in steelbook form because I like them to match.

The standard releases are BR-Digital, 4K-BR-Digital, or DVD ONLY. These can be found almost anywhere, I think even certain Wal-Marts… (WalMart needs to get their crap together)

These are all the US releases of Solo that I am aware of.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Unfortunately there’ll be no ‘Big Sleeve Editions’ of Solo in the UK:-

Big Sleeve Edition Fans - Facebook page

Hopefully someone else will produce them, or someone in another country will make them available.

The quality for TFA, TLJ and Rogue One ‘Big Screen Editions’ releases were great - with a real retro vinyl vibe going on with them - ot.com thread link

Am almost tempted to try some of the instructions for a custom-made cover in ^…^'s quality ‘custom made laserdisc/vinyl covers for blu-rays/DVDs’ thread - if there is some enough decent quality (and sized) art available.

Maybe stuff like this…

^ by the sublimely talented Matt Ferguson - who has knocked up covers for other Star Wars material too (and a host of other films as well) - https://twitter.com/cakes_comics & https://www.cakesandcomics.com/

Elsewhere in the UK, from earlier in the week…

‘After two days on sale, the spin-off starring Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover has shifted 139,000 copies, that’s more than the rest of the Top 40 combined on today’s Official Chart Update.’

A good sign Disney will hopefully take note of.

Through the Walmart app on my android phone, I can scan the receipt barcode and any movie I buy will be loaded in Vudu automatically. I haven’t tried it with a new release BR. That may be why the Walmart exclusive doesn’t have a separate code. Might be worth a try.

For The Last Jedi, the only place I could find the BR+DVD+Digital was from the Disney movie club. So I got Solo there as well.

Was at Walmart yesterday and they had written on the Solo specific cardboard kiosk “limit 2 per customer.” Don’t know what that was about. I actually feel like the movie will gain the most fans when it hits Netflix.

Speaking of streaming, I’ve been thinking if they would do a sequel it’d be straight to the Disney service, but after the new Marvel miniseries announcement, I wonder if they might go that route with expanding the world set up there? I could easily see them do not just a Solo miniseries, but a bounty hunter one or even one for Enfys Nest, which I think would be really cool.

It’s that way at my Walmart also, and even we don’t know why it’s like that, it was just a condition we were given. Maybe Disney had a hold up at some factory and don’t have as much stock as they planned on?

They accidentally pressed thousands of copies of Song Of The South by mistake, and have to start over now. 😛

Just watched Solo on Netflix. I chuckled a few times, but was mostly bored. It wasn’t as joyless or tedious as Rogue One, but still didn’t really offer anything new or interesting. Too much action with characters I didn’t really care about.

I wish Han and Lando had a few more scenes together. Their on-screen chemistry was pretty good. I’m glad that the movie didn’t feel the need to end in a giant space battle.

Having Darth Maul as the Crimson Whatever was pointless and eye-roll inducing. And L3 was completely insufferable.

I’m a bit confused regarding the oscar nominees this year, but yay for Star Wars!

That being said I don’t think Solo will win visual effects 😔. While the CGI was solid it was anything dazzling like some others on this list.

I watched it again last night, and have it queued up for tonight also. I liked it in the theater, and now it’s even more enjoyable. I really like the Han and Chewie portions the best. Chewie has long been one of my favorite parts of the GFFA.

The train heist is very much my favorite part of the film.

This was already posted this in the ‘Star Wars Fan Edits’ section as it featured a few ideas on how to change or improve certain scenes for anyone thinking of doing a Solo Edit.

It also has a few intriguing viewpoints and insights on the film throughout, so worth a post in here too…

Solo Deserves A Sequel: An Underrated Film Walkthrough’…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRgvZgTTrjY

It features quite an interesting take on Darth Maul and an alternative idea for the ‘big bad’ to give a certain someone some background and also a personal grudge or vendetta against Han for in amongst other events in later films (starting around 20.50 into the video).

A shame that a Solo sequel very likely won’t happen - though a decent video on it regardless 😃

I am still so saddened that we won’t get Solo sequels, as I really thought it had the potential to be like the new Indiana Jones for Lucasfilm.

I was so disappointed with the new Mary Poppins too, and that’s the film to blame for forcing Solo into that crowded May release date.

I sincerely hope that maybe Disney+ will carry on the story.

Personally, I wish they could just do the stories they want to do regardless of box office success. So many great movies over the years of cinema bombed at the box office. Plus they made more than enough from TFA, RO, and TLJ that they could afford to take the hit with Solo.

To paraphrase a tv series Rian Johnson directed several episodes of, “Disney ain’t in the Star Wars business, they’re in the money business.”

One thing that occurred to me recently that probably hurt the film is that while obviously some people were upset with recasting an iconic character, what potentially really exacerbated that issue was that we just saw Harrison actually play him not three years before. So I’m sure a lot of people didn’t feel the urgency when they just recently got their fix of Han Solo but featuring the genuine article.

That is a really good point.

Though I honestly feel a stronger marketing campaign could have done a better job at selling the film to general audiences. Not only was the marketing WAY too short, but I think a more targeted approach could have helped people got on board with the idea of Alden as Han. Possibly they could have shown more brief clips of him playing Han, maybe a trailer with a different angle, per se. We need to sell people on this new kid as Han, so let’s make a trailer that shows off a little more Han. Or even something as simple as having Alden on more talk shows to allow people to get to like Alden as a person. Can’t you picture him playing a party game with Jimmy Fallon?

I also think he would’ve been a great person to host SNL. They had Donald Glover host around the same time (not only to promote Solo, but also his own show and music, since “This is America” dropped the same night. But honestly people already like Donald Glover a lot. Alden has shown he has the comedy chops with his brief appearance in *Hail, Caesar!”, and if the film had been pushed back to allow more time for this kind of promotion, I think the film performance would have improved.

EDIT: This might not make sense, but one thing that comes to mind is that the trailers didn’t tally present us with any stakes, or a hook to make us find out what is going to happen.

They sort of didn’t need that for TFA, honestly. People were going to see it regardless. The Last Jedi trailer teased Rey possibly turning to the dark side. Rogue One set the stakes up with this band of ragtag rebels going against the odds to save the galaxy against this weapon of mass destruction. What about Solo?

All we knew was that Han got a job with a big time gangster. I wonder if the trailer has hinted at the threat Dryden Vos and Crimson Dawn presented, that if they failed they could be killed, people would’ve been more interesting in seeing what would happen. Obviously we know Han won’t die, but it still works with James Bond, Ethan Hunt and Indiana Jones.

Another trailer could’ve done a better job at teasing Han and Qi’ra’s relationship, which is personally one of my favorite aspects of the whole film. Teasing a nice star-crossed romance could’ve also helped sell the movie to certain female audiences who might be less interested in the action, but would be interested in another love story with Emilia Clarke (who has established herself in Game of Thrones and Me Before You). Anyway, just some thoughts.

Indeed, the marketing for Solo really fell flat. There are times I wonder if Disney was intentionally writing it off, expecting it to do decent at the box office simply because of the Star Wars brand, but really invested in Avengers or Mary Poppins.

I don’t think negative reception to TLJ had anything to do with Solo’s failure. I think the real problem was like you said, why should audiences watch Solo? The average person’s reaction was likely:

  1. Another Star Wars movie? I mean they’re fun, but wasn’t the last one like 5 months ago?

  2. Wait that’s not Harrison Ford! What’s with this?

  3. This looks generic, nothing special.

  4. No lightsabers this time, huh.

  5. Eh, it looks fine but I don’t feel like watching another movie. Just saw Avengers and Deadpool.
