What shots from the Blu-Ray we’re used for 4K77, it says on the 4K77 page and I quote " Finally, about 400 frames that couldn’t be sourced from anywhere else at the time they were needed, were upscaled from the official Blu-Ray." I was wondering what scene interpreted these frames

Last shot of reel 3, first and last shots of reel 4, first and last shots of reel 5, first shot of reel 6.

Williarob - any chance of you posting the missing frame from the end of reel 5 color corrected to match the DNR version? It really bugs me that the US GOUT is missing this frame (and has become the site standard) and I’d like to be able to add it in to match.

Any advice on disc labels? I don’t really have a printer designed to digitally print a picture on a disc, but I “might” be able to print labels on paper using “avery.com.”

I don’t recommend any form of stick-on/adhesive label. They ruined most of the discs I used them on over time, and I’ve heard horror stories of them ruining disc drives as well.

If you want disc labels, the only truly safe way to do it is to get printable discs and use a compatible printer, unfortunately.

That may take time. I would have to buy a new printer and bd 50 printable discs. What about slip covers? Anyone know the best paper to print for slip covers?

I don’t have the files handy anymore - and I deleted all the bluray stuff. But it would be trivially easy for you to do yourself: Just take the shot straight from the bluray, color match it with Dre’s color match tool and drop it right in, replacing the existing shot and extending it by one frame. Since it’s coming from the bluray it won’t even need denoising and will fit right in. If you need it in 4K, you can grab infogition’s video enhancer software (now free) to upscale it.

I was after a certain indie band’s very rare home-made CD-R release from the late 90s and every existent copy is now unrippable thanks to the adhesive used in the printed disc labels. Luckily I found someone who had ripped the CD back in the day and still had the files.

It’s worse for CDs because it actually peels the data off. DVDs and Blu-rys should be recoverable in theory.

Well, I wouldn’t call this trivially easy, but here are two versions of the extra frame, color matched to the DNR and No-DNR v1.1. Looks like the No DNR version uses the actual film print, while the DNR version substitutes the shot from the blu ray.

It’s all relative: it’s trivially easy compared to restoring the entire film 😃 But you’re right, it’s still a fair amount of work, so thank you for doing that.

Actually they are both from the Bluray - the film prints are all missing a bunch of frames right here and it proved very difficult to transition from the film frames we did have to the bluray frames without it being obvious. So the solution was to replace the entire shot with the bluray, color matching it (and the cropping) to the film.

For the DNR version I just went back to the bluray again since I needed the version without the reel change markers (which were composited in to the no DNR version from the original film elements).

The cropping is different because the NoDNR version had been cropped to match the film in an effort to transition from one to the other, which wasn’t redone for the DNR version.

I was too young to see any movie in 1977, let alone SW but I remember going to see ANH during the 1997 re-release and thinking how strange the print looked (besides all the CG). It was distracting to the point where I wasn’t sure I enjoyed the experience. I think those issues partially carried over to the SE blu-rays.

While the print used in the 4K77 scan certainly has its flaws, it’s definitely superior to every official release of ANH I’ve seen. Thanks to everyone for all your amazing work.

Similar experience for me. I grew up with the original on home video and saw the Special Editions in theaters, but the most remarkable thing about 4K77 is that it looks like a film shot in the ‘70s and I’ve literally never seen it look like this before. Even if Disney/Lucasfilm were eventually to release the original cuts on home video, I doubt they’d look like this just because it’s so radically different from how the films have been presented for the past three decades.

A little off topic, but can somebody please explain to me the difference between a hardcore and casual Star Wars fan? I personally don’t want to consider myself a casual fan. I’ve been a fan of the Star Wars movies since birth. When I think of a casual fan, I think of someone who just started getting into it in their adulthood.

The only real distinction is that a “hardcore” fan thinks the fact that they saw a silly space movie in 1977 makes them superior to someone who didn’t see it until 1997 or 2007 or – heaven forbid! – 2017.

If you like Star Wars, that makes you a fan. Anyone who tries to perpetuate some sort of hardcore/casual dichotomy is just acting on their insecurity in the silliest way imaginable.

While I don’t disagree with anything you just said, I would argue that a “hardcore” Star Wars fan could point out to you a number of key differences between the 1977 version, the 1981 version, the 1985 Audio mix, the 1993 THX masters, the 1997 Special Edition, the 2004 DVD and the 2011 Bluray. While a Casual (or new) fan probably wouldn’t know about these differences (or care).

I was born in 1990. My intro to Star Wars was the CBS/FOX tapes older than me (mostly ROTJ). I grew up in a time when I had the older tapes, witnessed the release of the special Editions, and the Prequels.

Oh, for sure. There are definitely different levels of knowledge and interest, but from my experience those specific distinctions (hardcore/casual) most often tend to be used for the purposes of gatekeeping so that older fans can wield their knowledge of trivia as a cudgel. And this is hardly exclusive to Star Wars fans. It’s one of those ugly aspects of fandom that is pretty consistent regardless of your interests.

I hate the Blu-Ray editions, the only time I bring them out when “VII, VIII and IX” come out and do a marathon before the I go see the film, but instead of him making the Shudder Special Editions the only version available he should have made a version where you can change what version of the film you want to watch, like you can click on your Blu-Ray remote between the “Theatrical Cut” and the “Special Editions” as I would pick the Original Release because that’s the better version, but now we have the best versions now other than the Despecialized Editions, we have 4K77, 4K80 (coming soon) and 4K83 by our side now, so we don’t have to worry about the Shudder Special Editions anymore! I enjoy watching 4K77 and 4K83 and soon 4K80 on my Samsung 65" 4K UHD TV and I thank you all for making this possible and hope to make the horrible Special Edition cuts obsolete some day!

FWIW, I first saw all three movies in 1993.

DL the DNR file, streaming from my laptop > HDMI > 4K TV, I say it rolling on the screen got so pumped then a few minutes in, commentary started talking over the film, what in the world! What can I do about this?

Select a different audio track! How you do that will depend on the player, but in most cases you can simply right click and select from the audio menu. You probably want to use a different player though because it sounds like the one you are using can’t decode the DTSHD-MA audio tracks, which is why you are hearing the commentary track (the first Dolby Digital AC3 track). Switch to MPV, Media Player Classic (MPC), or Potplayer!

On your laptop, whatever software you’re using to play the file, have a look at the Audio options list and choose one that doesn’t have the commentary on - there should be a few to choose from.

Hope that will work (or someone more familiar with may be able to help) 😃

OK worked perfect!! Hooked it up to my Samsung and played with no commentary. The TCL I was using that is only a few days old is going back to Best Buy no doubt!! Not all based on this but this and a few other quirks I hate.
