I was going through my hard disc trying to clear some space, and I found an early experimental shot. I won't post it on the X0 site as I never finished it, there are more things wrong with it than I can count, but rather than just delete it, I thought I might as well throw it up here anyway, as I am busy programming at the moment, and there won't be any current screenshots for the next week.
So you guys will have to make do with this throwaway shot in the meantime.

We have come a long way since we were messing with this!

A bit of a cleanout and I've recovered 20GBs...Yay!

I'm not sure if this question has been asked, but will there be removable subtitles for the movie's dialogue? My parents are getting a little up in age and I'm sure they'd appreciate the additional help (yes, they like SW)...

Given a copy of the movies, I'd be more than happy to make some subtitles.

X0 Team - Ever consider releasing a raw capture of the three films before you do any restoration? There would be 2 reasons for doing such a thing:

1. Show people how good it looks before any changes are made to the color, noise, etc. to increase donations.
2. Get loads a feedback from people who think "scene x" needs work in a certain areas. After all, 100 heads are better than 4.

Only downfall could be the triggering of a C&D. It's up to you.

Whats C&D? I think that's actually a good idea of getting people to give massive feedback that a few people might overlook (though I'm sure you guys wouldn't ).

Cease & Desist

The problem i see with that is the old cliche, 'To many cooks spoil the broth'

If everyone has a say in it (or access to it to give their opinion) they a) wont necessarily make decisions that are best for the overall project/restoration and that b) just flat out dont know what the scene really should look like. I may think that R2 is too blue in one scene, or the scene is too dark when in fact it could be a 100% perfect representation of how it should be, its just not how i remember it. They've stated that they have other sources to reference to get the colors and saturation back to (or very close to) the correct balance. And from what they have shown us so far I dont think they really need more input, especially since that will just cause them to have to sift through countless emails/pms just to get the maybe 1 or 2 a day that are actually worth anything. There are other people on this board that can probably offer useful opinions such as those doing their own restorations (as im sure there are others) but they know who most of these people that can be
of actual help are and are more than capable of contacting them for their opinions if they decide they need to.

plus the size of the raw capture would be to large for most people, so they would have to at least compress that down to a dvd.

not saying that you personally wouldnt offer valuable input, or that no one would. And I by no means am speaking for the X0 team. This is just my 2 cents/opinion on what I would do if i were in their shoes.

Darth Simon - Good point. Maybe releasing it to a handful of people doing their own restorations might be a better idea. And when I say "raw" I don't mean uncompressed, I just mean un-tampered with in terms of color correction, etc.

On another note...has the X0 team ever discussed an estimated completion date? I just joined the mailing list so they probably have or "it'll be done when it's done." Point and laugh at the newb (me)...

Triggering a C&D is a downfall of any preservation release.

- I think showing screenshots and the upcoming video clips will be enough to show people how good the transfer looks at the various stages we're in.
- We already get loads of feedback through the site's feedback page as well as this thread. It will only increase the further along we get. I think anyone who has a strong opinion on what work should be done on the transfer probably already has some experience with a transfer of their own. One could pretty much assess where work is needed by looking at the other LD transfers out there. The only difference is that ours needs less work to fix up as far as filtering goes because of the clarity of the X0's output. Things like color correction and IVTC issues would be about the same though. Our captures are just cleaner and more detailed than anything else out there.

All in all I'd say that anyone with an opinion is welcome to contact us. But adding 50 more people to work on the project would just make things take longer. How long do you think making a single decision would take with that many people? On the flip side, take the four of us who know exactly what we're doing, coordinating together on what needs to be done with our prestine reference material to fall back on. I don't think I'd have it any other way.

Most importantly, it's the X0 Team's project, not the community's. The community can choose to accept it or not.

Besides, everything I've seen them turn out is fantastic, and above anything else we've seen up until now. They have proven again and again to have the knowledge and experience to make the best possible transfer.

If you think you can do better Observer, go buy an X0 unit and get cracking.

(Did that sound like a flame? I didn't mean it to.)

If anyone wants to give feedback to anybody else that is doing a restoration project the process is simple.

1) Grab a set of laserdiscs (or DVDs)
2) Watch it and make notes about what you think is wrong with any given scene
3) Put your suggestions up on the various forums for discussion.

Perhaps there should be a general 'requested fixes' forum created that anyone can post suggestions in for everyone to look at. Most people are working from the same or similar sources, so if you watch one of those and see something you don't like then post it around for people to discuss.
Then one of the multitude of people doing a restoration may or may not decide to use your suggestion in their project.

Frankly, after spending the time on my own encode, I'm perfectly happy to sit back and let someone else do the work this time.

I don't want them to release a 50GB lossless-compressed version, because I know I'd download it to play with.

I know some of you guys doing the X0 Project will probably be doing your own covers, labels etc but have to say Coov's cool XO Project logo on page 60 of the Definitve DVD Cover thread really hits the mark.

Keep up the great work lads.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

wait, so how is it that the results are so much more clear than the tr-47? is it just the LD player, or are you doing a cleanup like the guy from starwarslegacy.com? (btw, what has he been up to?)
