Doctor Who — Page 91

A few thoughts after just one watch.

For me, the best episode yet! Again, deeper and more serious than we’ve been in a very long time. I really dug the weight of the scene where the Doctor is in physical pain at having thoughts forced in her head. To me, that had a more serious feel than we normally see in the show. Another was when she’s telling the Vajarian she’s going to stop them. It lacked the usual not on my watch bravado and instead had a more serious tone, as though the Doctor was genuinely upset and then threatening them.

I’ve thought this a while and it was especially so this evening because of her being central to this story; Mandip is breathtaking. Even better, she’s a strong actress playing a deep character. I look forward to every scene. I loved that this was largely about her. She has the chops and can carry scenes.

Outstanding score on this one. Like a lot of the episode, as well as the new season in general, this was big budget Hollywood level. Awesome score. Looking forward to a soundtrack album. Great stuff and as I suspected, the show is really getting its footing as it grows. Ryan was a non-issue but they can’t all be center stage in each episode.

Jodie’s Doctor has a lot of the quirkiness of the 10 and 11, but more of an actual edge when she’s angry or threatened. It’s a more serious take or at least a more realistic one. To echo oojason, the cinematography was very much on par with a big-budget Hollywood film. In general that seems to be the case with the season so far.

Hartnell has a lot of presence that Jodie just can’t match (and I don’t really think any who have followed him have).

You haven’t seen much of Troughton have you?

I’ve seen all of what exists, other than The Invasion and The War Games in full (but I have seen clips of the important bits). He’s definitely great in his own right, but he has a different sort of presence to him. I’ve previously stated he’s my favorite of them all, but after revisiting Hartnell’s era recently, I really enjoy his characterization. It’s a shame that whenever they want to try to go back to it, it doesn’t fare so well with viewers (Colin Baker, Peter Capaldi).

Hartnell made his presence known, Troughton disguised his cunning into foolishness. But both are great. Of all the eras, the 60s are what I’d most want to rewatch.

Not really a fan of this change. From what I’ve read, this is the kind of situation where, once the give up that time slot, they’re possibly never going to be able to get it back. And, when this rumor was going around a few weeks ago,
the reason stated was that Chibnall thought all of the Christmas plot ideas were tapped out. Which is… strange. It doesn’t need to be about Christmas to be broadcast on that day. And several of them have only had a passing reference to the holiday.

This would also explain, perhaps, why Chibnall initially refused to take over for the last Christmas special. Moffat stuck around to produce yet an extra Christmas special, specifically to make sure Doctor Who kept that time slot. Oh well, thanks anyway?

Yeah, the production of this show is a freaking disaster. Twice Upon a Time was written in about two weeks, and it shows.

Wry, understated humor that slips by quickly. Unabashed accent. A bit unsure of him/herself, self-critical. Generally passive personality, shy, socially awkward, until pushed too far, then becomes very assertive.

Possibly so mate - though I would say the BBC struggles to fill it’s schedules for either day with new quality content these days, so there may be a chance of it going back to Christmas Day, if the will was there from the show-runners?

It’ll be interesting to see the viewing figures and attitudes for what they do for next year…

Loved The Witchfinders episode, yes the ending seemed a bit rushed/quick, though the cinematography, performances & humour - and enjoyment of it - are all still going strong…

SPOILERS

and yet the villains were genuinely creepy / scary - the much underrated Siobhan Finneran was on form, Alan Cumming was great - a great mix of humour and a layered performance for the darker moments, as well as a few pointers to a dark period of history once again. Nice mix of tech and aliens too…

Only two episodes of the season left… (plus the New Year Special)

Someone has kindly (and jokingly) put together a complaint form for viewers displeased with whatever they are displeased with each week:-

^ Certainly hope the rumours of this are just that mate - am intrigued to see where a second or third season would go under this somewhat different (and really enjoyable) incarnation of Who.

Loved last night’s episode - really well done…

SPOILERS

even if the talking frog may be a bit out there for some 😃 (I got a Douglas Adams vibe from it)
and well in to the showrunners for hiring a blind actress to portray the young blind girl too.

Doctor Who Series 12 Announcement…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/entries/89823d93-ca6c-486b-9c82-2a71cd1560bb

'As series 11 came to a close on BBC One tonight (Sunday 9th December) the show announced that series 12 is on its way and will be returning to BBC One in early 2020.

Series 11 marked a brand new era for Doctor Who with Showrunner, Chris Chibnall, taking control of the TARDIS. With Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, viewers saw the Doctor and her friends travel through space and time on adventures fighting monsters and conquering battles. Series 12 will see Jodie reprise her role as the Doctor and she will once again be joined by Bradley Walsh (Graham), Mandip Gill (Yasmin) and Tosin Cole (Ryan).

So far, from the first eight episodes, series 11 of Doctor Who has averaged a 4-screen consolidated audience of 8.4m.

Jodie’s first episode as the Doctor launched with a consolidated audience of 11 million making it the second biggest drama this year across all channels, while also placing it among the top 10 programmes in 2018 so far across all channels and genres. The episode received 3.7 million requests through BBC iPlayer.

Speaking of the return Showrunner Chris Chibnall said “We’re off again! Well we never actually stopped - as Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends have been winning the hearts of families across the nation this autumn, we’ve been busy with a whole new set of action packed adventures for the Thirteenth Doctor. We adore making this show and have been blown away by the response from audiences, so we can’t wait to bring more scares, more monsters and more Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole to BBC One. Brilliant!”

Charlotte Moore, Director of Content added, “We’re delighted that the Doctor and her friends will be returning to thrill audiences in 2020. I know Chris and the whole team are already working on a whole new set of exciting adventures. In the meantime we’ve got a very special episode on New Year’s Day for everyone to enjoy.”’

^ A shame we have to wait until 2020 (or after the New Year Special) - though very much looking forward how they approach the second season with the new cast and showrunners (& also writers) now settled in, as it were…

Why the heck such a long gap between seasons? Bad enough that happened to the old series during Colin Baker’s tenure.

It’s not good news for the show,…the long wait to see Series 11,…now another long wait till we see it again

It’s obviously not hot property any more,…hopefully they take the criticism on board & correct their course

For me: bland writing, uninteresting villains (or at least, the ones that could be brought back weren’t interesting enough or weren’t actually villains), and too many companions taking focus and development away from the Doctor, leaving her to feel rather bland and one-note despite Jodie’s excellent performance. (Please get rid of Ryan…)

They should keep up with the historicals, though. Witchfinders, Demons of the Punjab, and Rosa were all the standout episodes this season. But they should probably drop the shoehorned sci-fi elements in those stories and go back to pure historicals if they’re gonna keep doing them - Witchfinders is the only one where that really worked for me (it was particularly bad in Rosa).

The only non-historicals I really liked this season were It Takes You Away and, to a much lesser extent, The Tsuranga Conundrum.

But the biggest criticism I have is, as I said, the one-note writing for the Doctor. She has the boundless enthusiasm, wide-eyed wonder, and deep empathy, and…that’s it. Where’s the ancient alien who carries the guilt of all the terrible things she’s done? Where’s the Oncoming Storm bubbling beneath the surface? The clever manipulator?

It seems like they were so afraid of people criticizing the first female Doctor that they stripped the character of any of her shades of gray, leaving behind a lot of nuance and complexity that nearly every Doctor has had before her, and giving her essentially no arc whatsoever throughout the season.

Hopefully now that the companions have been established and will all be returning, they’ll spend more time developing the Thirteenth Doctor (and I guess Ryan too if he has to come back).
