Doctor Who — Page 90

Eh, the War Doctor improved a little but not by a lot. Which is a real shame.

I love that we’ve gotten two decades worth of material with 8. Though I wish they’d go back to the 8DA format instead of the boxsets.

I’m still mourning the loss of Jago & Litefoot. By far the best Doctor Who spin-off in any format.

3rd episode…

clever, engaging and emotional - with some humour in just the right places; informative throughout, and that ending… powerful stuff.

Am loving this new Who.

For me, best episode in years. As a Doctor Who episode, fantastic. Clearly Jodie is starting to make The Doctor her own. For that matter, so are the companions. I’m loving the tougher Doctor and the more serious tone. I’m watching it again in an hour or so just to see the great performances and the cerebral discussions. It’s a great Who episode, but more to the point it’s a great TV episode - Who or otherwise. I was floored. The last 15 minutes or so were a new level of seriousness. I suspect because it was a known event in our history.

Also nice to see the companions get a substantial amount of story. Love LOVE Mandip. She had some great scenes tonight! As with the Doctor, I’m digging the deeper work. She really shined in her scenes. Must be her Mexican heritage. 😉

Great work by Tosin also. I’m liking that he’s more than just the frustrated kid from the first episode. He’s becoming quite a well rounded character. Same for Bradley. More depth and great as an audience surrogate. The scene where Graham talks about missing Grace was particularly well done and very moving.

Last and nowhere least; Vinette!! OMG, she was fantastic. LOVE HER, and not just swoon (although, there is her physical beauty). Tonight was strength of performance. She’s amazing.

Yeah, this episode was emotionally sound. I’m reminded of “Thin Ice”, where the Doctor punched a bigot in the face. This presented a situation where that wasn’t possible, even though you want that to happen, and as a result was much more effective on an emotional level. Rosa Parks was portrayed well, but again the story feeds more into the legend of Rosa Parks we’re taught in elementary school rather than history. However, the period setting was very well realized. The whole dynamic between all of the companions and the Doctor is starting to come into its own, and I’m really liking these characters.

The weakest part of the story by far is the villain… what was his motivation? He was a bit of a cartoon. However, the villain only existed to present the premise of the episode, and wasn’t meant to be a focus, so it’s not a major weakness.

However, a part of this did feel like an after-school special, especially the final scene. But this wasn’t really so much a lesson about the historical context that surrounded this particular event, so much as a lesson on racism in 1950s America in general. The show is also aimed at a younger audience, so this is the approach that makes the most sense anyway.

Very effective.

Just noticed the 4th Doctor looks like Harpo Marx.

When’s something gonna happen?

Just got around to watching the 2nd episode. These are great little stories - I hope they keep up like this! This one was much easier to watch than the first one because it wasn’t flooded with ads and cutaways. Love the theme music and visuals that go along with it.

Nitpicking… I wish there was less emphasis on the Sonic screwdriver. But then, that is a carryover from all of the modern-era episodes.

I still dislike the color palette - or lack thereof. All that orange is driving me crazy. The lack of natural color, especially whites and blues (and actual greens and reds) makes everything look small and scrunched. Hard for me to imagine how multiple people can look at this and not immediately see that the colors are worse than on the 1970s episodes on VHS. There is no discernible reason for this, because most of the other modern-era Who episodes had great, rich color.

I still have no idea what the Tardis looks like, but I’m assuming that will become more clear in the next episode. Well, other than that it is almost entirely orange (like the rest of the show).

I don’t mind the strong color choices at all when depicting something like an alien world. Episodes 3 and 4 were differently colored and more natural (but we’re on OT, which is probably the most touchy site in the world when it comes to color, so I can’t say you’ll like it for sure! 😃 ). The preview for next week was almost all blue and white sets, though! 😉

It’s a strange design that looks like they don’t have enough space to film the whole cast near the console. I wonder if it will be tweaked for next series.

Just watched The Sensorites for the first time. Not a great story, and I’m not alone in saying that, but it was fun to see Hartnell’s Doctor again. There are a lot of good moments in the first episode, especially in the TARDIS. But it is somewhat similar to the plot of The Aztecs, only on an alien planet with not very threatening aliens. The differences make themselves apparent in the final episode; it surprised me with how many ideas were thrown into that single episode, only to be resolved a few minutes later.

The writer has been an enigmatic figure in the past, and there’s an excellent bonus feature in which Toby Hadoke (a regular of these DVD features) unearths some details about him. It’s well worth the watch, and possibly more interesting than the story itself.

Just saw the new episode. Another cartoon villain… I hope this isn’t a sign that all our new villains will be more or less cartoon caricatures. Definitely not as strong as Rosa, but the cobwebs looked good. I’m a bit concerned that the quality of the show might not be as greatly improved as I had hoped, but it’s still way too early to say.

Watched Rosa. It felt like an episode of “Timeless.” Not a bad thing per se. Did I miss something about the villain that made him anything more than a macguffin that brought them to Birmingham? All the timey wimey stuff and moral lectures to everyone the Doctor meets were replaced by great caution in this episode. Don’t know if this is the new direction of the show or a one-off show of respect to real history. I liked that the moralizing which has pervaded the show was given some real substance at least.

The blue elephant in the room.

Yeah, that was a real solid episode.

Is the show good now that Moffat’s gone?

Author

Too early to say. Two of four episodes have been really solid, one was okay, and the other slightly less okay. At least, for me. All of the timey-wimey and convoluted plotting is gone, so if that was your biggest issue with Moffat, you might like it now. The show is currently suffering from underdeveloped characters, but that may change.

Are they still doing multiple episode story arcs? I really miss the serial format of earlier seasons.

Been looking back at Capaldi moments… It’s a lot better than I remember. I wish I appreciated it more. It’s still too early to weigh judgement on this new showrunner, but there hasn’t been an absolute masterpiece of an episode yet to compare to the heights of, say, Vincent and the Doctor or Heaven Sent. Rosa comes close, but I don’t think it’s quite there.

I’ve really enjoyed the last couple of episodes. I’d dare to say that nuWho has finally reached Big Finish’s level of quality.

Looking forward to next Sunday’s. Another historical that looks rather good. And four weeks in a row with non-Chibnall writers (and first time writers for the show) sounds good to me.

I lament the fact that Capaldi didn’t stick around another year. Supposedly, he had the option. Much of his era was beset by production troubles (Jenna Coleman’s indecisiveness causing hasty rewrites, no 2016 series, etc. etc.) and he never got a fair shot. I always liked his edge (series 9 onwards, they tried way too hard his first year) that seems to be lost in Jodie’s portrayal. We’ve gone back to another childish Doctor. To be fair, Jodie hasn’t had a proper chance to prove herself yet, but still… Capaldi’s performance was masterful.

Quality episode that for me - and also another one addressing somewhat awkward and sensitive historical events with respect and care they deserve - from the POV of the people in everyday life who would just start to be affected by them.

And hopefully also serve as an introduction to the subject of Partition too - for those who may beinterested.

Loved the music at the end too (and also the cinematography throughout).

Anyone see the new episode? Another quasi-historical, it seems. I haven’t seen it, but finally watched last week’s episode yesterday… it was better than the spiders, and I actually liked the monster. Still not extraordinary, but it was decent. I still didn’t really feel anything for the characters. Oh, and I still miss Capaldi.

Also been watching the Hartnell era, most of it for the first time, and I just adore it. The Rescue and The Romans were both extraordinarily good, and legitimately funny in the case of The Romans. I’m waiting on receiving more DVDs of his, but I expect even the more maligned stories like The Gunfighters to have something for me to enjoy.

So why do I love Hartnell and don’t particularly care for this new series? It’s all in the writing, the characters, and the tone. There’s a lot more time spent just getting to know the characters, where they just goof off for a good five minutes, and Hartnell has a lot of presence that Jodie just can’t match (and I don’t really think any who have followed him have). The stories are witty, and don’t take themselves too seriously, which is just a joy.

By contrast, Chibnall seems to be taking these generic stories way too seriously, and doesn’t give enough for our characters to really do. Jodie still hasn’t established her Doctor, and I’ve been able to insert other Doctors into her place and the story remains relatively unchanged. It’s just so generic by contrast, which is kind of crazy given how ridiculous the concept of the show is.
