Doctor Who — Page 81

Jeez, have you seriously given this any thought at all? There’s probably been 100 times that previous doctors have had the EXACT same thing said about them. “Who put HIM in charge?” I mean, just substitute “he” for “she” in the above quote and you’ve probably got 25% of the previous episodes. Just how SHOULD anyone challenge the doctor’s authority going forward, now that it’s a woman, without you seeing it as a feminist hit piece?

How many times have they put someone challenging the Doctor’s authority in an ad for the show?

Warb, are you seriously bothered by the fact that the advertising for the first season with a female Doctor emphasizes the fact that the Doctor is female? What the fuck did you expect? It’s advertising designed to attract an audience, it’s not necessarily indicative of any stance the episodes may or may not take.

There have been plenty of both great and shitty shows that have had less-than-impressive ads. It wasn’t even a bad ad, but I’m sure equally mediocre and pandering advertisements have been used in the show’s past. I know you’ll just ignore all this truth that I’m laying down right now, because I’m mean (or whatever), but you should consider what I’m saying, at least.

The people who cut the promos usually aren’t the people who actually make the show. I’m old enough to remember some groan worthy promos for Star Trek TNG.

I think what I find the most irritating about promos these days, is they show a scene, and in less than one second, they are already fading it out. It’s like this for snippet after snippet, at the end I have absolutely no idea what I just watched. So I have to watch it on YouTube so I can hit pause to even see what is in each snippet. Maybe that’s the intent.

Don’t understand why that’s an issue. Any network will always want to increase their viewership, same as any company will always want to increase their profits (as for television, more viewers = more profit). This is the first woman Doctor, so why wouldn’t they try to target feminists (or pro-feminists, if that’s even a thing) in their advertising?

it’s not necessarily indicative of any stance the episodes may or may not take.

Then what’s your point?

So you are an anti-feminist. I’m glad you’ve admitted it, which is the first step towards solving your problem. The next step is moving out of the sexist 1950s and into the 21st century.

mods, if you want me to give this the response it deserves(which would be against the rules), I suggest you tell him to back off and not call me anti-feminist again.

I’ve considered watching Dr. Who. I have no idea where to start. Can someone point me in the right direction? Should I just watch the best episodes to see if I like the concept? Should I start with a certain series? Does it matter? I’d like to know because I think it’s daunting.

There are a few good places to start. An Unearthly Child is the first episode, but given the 60s episodes are in black and white and 50% missing, they’re not recommended for beginners. If you don’t mind some low-budget 70s effects, start with Spearhead from Space. The modern series (a revival after 16 years off the air, save for a TV movie) starts with the questionably titled Rose. Anytime the showrunner changes is a good time to hop on, so The Eleventh Hour and, wouldn’t you know it, the new series airing next month. All these starting spots introduce everything you need to know, so you won’t feel lost.

So yeah, my recommendation is to hop on when the new series starts on October 7th. Just keep in mind that everything in the series besides the basic format changes, so don’t take anything as representative of the show as a whole.

If you have the time mate (and patience)… I’d opt to start with the 1st of the new seasons - 2005 with Ecclestone as The Doctor - only 178 episodes and some Christmas Specials to go 😉

Man, daunting is an understatement. 😉. I’m inclined to agree with oojason on this one. Start with Rose, 2005 and see how you like it.

That said, as it went along and regained its footing after the decade + off, it got better. If I were to pick random episodes, I’d go with these (below). When I get to work Monday I can cut and paste a detailed list with explanations I made for a coworker wanting to jump in the way you are wanting.

Blink. A perfect first episode because it’s told from the point of view of the main character, Sally Sparrow. As a new viewer, you’re at as big a loss of understanding as she is. In fact, the Doctor is hardly in the episode. Bonus: Carey Mulligan. swoon

Vincent And The Doctor. Like Blink, a great stand-alone episode where the story is more important than time travel. One of my favorites.

The Eleventh Hour. A wonderful first episode because it’s the 11th Doctor’s first episode. A great look at how he struggles after the regeneration to adjust to his new body and self. I’d put the first 20 minutes or so - The Doctor and the little girl - up against anything in Hollywood for heartwarming. When it’s just The Doctor and her meeting, cooking, and sitting at the table eating - perfect.

Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS. Another good stand-alone. This is probably the episode where I fell in love with The Impossible Girl.

There are others that I like as much or more, but may not be great first episodes because they’re a little heavy.

If you’re looking for a “litmus test” episode to see if you like the concept, I’d recommend “The Girl in the Fireplace” from series 2, the “Silence in the Library”/“Forest of the Dead” two-parter from Series 4, or “Vincent and the Doctor” from series 5.

If you’re looking for a jumping on point to start from and continue on, I’d recommend starting with Series 5 (The Eleventh Hour is the first episode), which was the first episode with a new head writer, production team, and entirely fresh cast. It purposefully doesn’t rely on knowledge of earlier seasons and was designed as a jumping on point, but it has more modern production values than 2005’s Series 1, which is still a bit early-00s cheesy.

You could start with Series 8 (first Twelfth Doctor episode) or Series 10 (first episode with the most recent companion, also designed to be a jumping on point), but both of those start to rely on knowledge of earlier seasons much more quickly.

The new season (Series 11), like Series 5, has an entirely new cast and new production team, so it’ll likely be an excellent starting point, too.
